Harley-Davidson Sportster Off-Road Conversion for the Dakota Adventure Loop - DakAL.

Father-Son ADV trip on the 900 mile off-road GPS loop known as the Dakota Adventure Loop, or the DakAL. To make it interesting, we decided to forego the modern ADV bikes and do something a bit more retro and fun. Enter two 1200 Sportsters with the classic peanut tanks and the 19/16 wheel combination. We add longer travel suspension from Legend Suspensions, skidplates, high exhaust, chain drive, rearset controls, raised fenders, knobby tires, and a few other goodies to make these bikes quite off-road capable. Did you do anything to the front suspension? I ride an 883 and it bottoms out on regular highway bumps, I can't imagine it perform off road very good.

Yes, we installed Legend Suspensions upgrade. Longer length, longer travel, better damping.

Thou shallst needth a BIGGER FUEL TANK. Do you think switching it with 4.5 Gallon tank of 1200 Custom would work on this setup?

Yeah, a larger tank would be good. I just wanted that old-school look so I sacrificed a little on the capacity. The spare fuel cell worked well, but for pure function, a larger tank would be better.

I think I bought the very last kits before they closed up shop. Too bad they're not still in business. I think their kit was great. Peg relocation is key to making this whole thing work.

That's exactly the kind of seat I'd like for my Iron 1200. Was it built completely from scratch, or is it a modified version of a stock Harley seat?

I had a local upholstery guy modify the stock solo seat. Turned out great, adds some extra cushion when seated off-road, and gets you up a little higher so it is easier to shift to a standing position when needed.

@@striderbikedad That's just what I'm looking for, some extra cushioning even for road riding, because the stock cafe seat on that model is terrible, as is the limited travel suspension, especially the rear, which I intend to change out. Also like the idea of being up a little higher, with my knees at a lower level than my hips.

I do. A take off kit from my #StridePiper project bike. It’s located in Sturgis. Literally a complete bolt on for any rubber mounted sporty. Also have the larger gas tank. Email me if you are interested.

@JohnLennon-yg4ut I've got those too... Yamaha T7s, Triumph Tiger 900s, had KTM 990s, as well. Sometimes it's just fun to do something different.
