Harley-Davidson tech is here and it's literally right in front of your face now, it's new, it's cool and it's the way everything is going. Is this Harley-Davidson tech going to last and what does this mean for the future in the used market. Right now it's not going to be an issue as the bikes are new and they are under warranty, which is all well and good but even warranties have their issues. The big issue is how is this Harley-Davidson tech going to age when it comes to the used market in the coming years. This can really increase the cost of repairs and replacements if you buy a used motorcycle which has all this Harley-Davidson tech and you suffer from a failure!

I think it’s a mistake just like the eventual water cooling of future big twins but the company will move forward as it sees fit and we will have to make do. My plan is to stick with older bikes. There are plenty of low mileage older bikes out there and it’s a buyers market.

And unfortunately some of these electronic things are pretty much out of necessity to stay ahead of over regulation that is only getting worse. Some of this stuff they are not doing so much because they want to but they have to to be able to stay ahead of competition and government over regulation. So for the most part we are going to have to go down the road and deal with it.

My HD mechanic owns 2 bikes: a 2023 Street Glide and a late 90s Evo Heritage (which he only bought last year from a guy who was told old to ride anymore). With both parked in his garage, the Evo is actually the more desirable of the two bikes. The Evo will just keep on keeping on. I wouldn't mind one myself, but am very contented with my twin cam 103 Softail Slim (apart from rusty wheel spokes).

I don’t think anyone has to worry about there screen going black that’s not going to happen. Well it could absolutely happen but I don’t see problems coming with that. BUT what I did hear from my local dealer is that on these new engines we will not ever be able to upgrade to a better CAM or headers and no aftermarket tuning will ever work on these new models now is that true I have not a clue but they did tell me that at pocono HD in PA. If that is true that is a HUGE PROBLEM. that’s half the fun of building your Harley to what we want it to be making it ours. Me personally I’m not a fan of the big digital screen and I like my Rushmore man I have a 21 street glide with a 128 big bore kit from Zippers performance air ride custom paint I’m never trading my bike in I’m very happy with what I have I don’t need the new and improved. We graduate thousands of students every year in 2014 when they came out with the new Rushmore bikes, the radios where digital and tied into the bikes engine management it didn't take long before they were able to electrical components around that so that we could change the radio and still have full operational 😮of the bike engine management and handlebar controls . There are companies out there that make replacement radios 4 Harley-Davidson I'm pretty sure one of them will figure out and just like the Rushmore back it will take a little while they'll figure out something .

I overheard an H-D salesman who was handing over a brand new bike to a happy customer say “if it doesn’t start, you turn it off again and reset the computer, and away you go”….. If it doesn’t start?!! It’s a brand new bike, there shouldn’t be “if it doesn’t start” for at least 5 years! You would never hear that in a metric showroom. 🤷🏻 Harleys had 2 things, simplicity and character, they neutered out the character by counterbalances and lightening the flywheels and now the simplicity has gone. Again that’s why the 98 Evo’s was the last of the HD’s you always could make running if you had installed a simple Advanced Unit Breaker Ignition,…(NO Electronic here).. and almost..no matter what, you just took a piece of wire from the battery to the + terminal on the Coil and then kicked or push started it…and you were able to ride to “safety” and get it properly fixed. Absolutely NOT possible today with impossible sealed black boxes with nano-prints and what have you….! I still love my 2017 FLTK M8 though,…well after I fixed it with a S&S Oilpump, S&S Camplate, S&S Lifters, S&S Pushrods, Zippers 468 Cam, S&S Manifold, Feuling Injectors, a 2-1 Sharkroad Exhaust…Modified by myself,..and I could go on…., it’s worth noting that the Bike has accepted all the changes and modifications without any problems,.. so I think it’s fair to say the factory Quality is pretty pretty good. The Streetglide special was 6.5 i believe? Its always been in my mind about how long stuff like that lasts . In the old days you rode your bike , no music , minimal electronics but now 😵😵‍💫. It already crossed my mind about what you have stated and you know when the warranty expires then what ? My 14 Streetglide is still under warranty! I got two years when the bike was new and have since put two 5 years on it so 2026 and i could do it once more i believe but i might not because of cost ( its like $3,000 for 5 years !!!!!) . I also have a indi that could probably do some work if i needed a new motor God Forbid. The bike has 45,000 on it and is immaculate and i run it on Amsoil. I bought a 1990 FLHTCU in '92. 40 watt Front - Rear sound system/ CB/ Cruise Control, etc. I truly loved that motorcycle. That was of course in the Evo days. Along the line, things stopped working. Then I had a nice-looking bike w/ a bunch of boat anchors attached. I wouldn't do it again.

I put out a video on this issue last summer with the new CVOs. I work in the IT industry and these current screens will be obsolete in 5 yrs. We have to hope Skyline will still be able to service them. There's a lot of behind the scenes issue with these computers. Ride safe my friend!

That was my exact thought as well when I saw car manufacturers going to the digital screens in the dash as well! It's gonna be interesting to see how this ages going forward, it might open a new market for the aftermarket!

While not ideal, if the bike starts, your phone will get you home. Estimate 30mpg, fill often, a simple speedometer app will guide you, while GPS maps will give you directions. Interestingly enough, I live in the Northeast, if I was in California, I would head east until I hit the Atlantic, then turn left. At that point finding home is not a big deal.

BMW went digital years ago and never heard of a serious issue. Thing is, they use the screen(the standard one) in a ton of their models. If the screen in used in just two models and then changed in a couple of years...yes, it might become an issue. Also, manufacturers charge an arm and a leg for what essentially is a tablet with a 15 years old tech inside.

My ‘21 Road King left me stranded last August in the middle of a 10 day trip. Bike when into “limp” mode after getting lunch in Red Lodge, MT heading back to Cody, WY. Tried everything to reset the check engine light. I could clear it, but would come back on and back into “limp” mode 100ft down the road. Waited on the side of the road for almost 6hrs because AAA is a garbage company. Finally got towed to Billings, MT. Pulled the bike off the tow truck, started it, no check engine light… Took it for a ride down the road and everything was perfectly fine. Seeing as I already went through a major headache getting it there, I figured they can still check it out. Thankfully during the rally their dealer was open on Sunday. Got it in first thing Sunday morning and as I suspected they did not find anything wrong with the bike. Said they can start pulling it apart to see if they can find a wiring issue, but obviously that would be hours worth of labor. Opted to take my chances with it and left the dealer. Haven’t had a single issue since…🙄

Bad move. To much tech to get glitzes and ruin one's ride time or get stranded away from home. I like to ride "simple" bikes. Everything analog. I just feel more connected or in tune with my bike. With all this tech, all I say to my friends with it is, just gonna cost you a lot of money when it breaks. Keeping things simple is the best route to take. Good video GixxerFoo!

Unfortunately a certain amount of tech advancements are necessary because it’s a constant cat and mouse with EPA over regulation. But yeah they should have some kind of backup for the screen, a way you can Bluetooth it and run the vital info on your phone or something. That is an interesting point.

As one of my favorite authors was wont to put it, "Ever at the mercy of a single fuse." You hit the nail on the head when you said technology is good... when it works! Makes me happy that I bought my SG in 2022 whose system is pretty much sorted out. Even if the infotainment system takes a puke, I'll still have gauges to know what the bike's doing. If I need a map, I have a phone. The only issue my 22 SG has is, oddly enough, the kind of problem that you were talking about the dealer being unable to fix; mine being the infamous TPMS glitch. I could get that part of the system shut off if I could find a dealer who would do it, but can't seem to get it fixed so that it works correctly. I'd hate to have that happen to *all* of my instruments!

Got 2 evo sportsters. An '03 cam and an '09 FI. The cam-O-3 has its own charisma and characteristics from cold start, but love how it rides on and on flawlessly after fully warm. Its my baby. The FI is very reliable and a no-brainer from start to finish. That is my workhorse. The both ride and feel very different, but love them both. Just wish they came with an inbuilt fuel gauge.

Same type of tech as in any of the newer vehicles, the infotainment system is the heart of controls with the brains in your pickup/car/whatever......you said it in the video. But if things don't work, what do you do? When the bottleneck is broken in a digital world, that bottleneck is your lifeline for making your bike/vehicle run down the road.

I'm on the fence about technology and there is pro's and con's to everything. My budget allows me not anything newer then 10 yrs old. I'm considering a 2014 Electric Glide cuz I like the 103 Vtwin and I want a touch screen like I have in my 2014 chevy Silverado. I like that thing. Hated it at first. Figure it's better then mounting my phone like I'm currently doing on my 99 Untra Glide. As far the whole dash being a touch screen without normal gages I'm on the fence about it. I'll feel better for a back up that we could plug in our phone and use it as for telling us what's going on with the bike. I agree Harley Davidson is the most reliable bikes on this planet and the most popular and most aftermarket made parts even they are slow to catch up. I think technology mix in with old school is a good idea. I'll draw the line at having a Revolution motor. I like the air cool engine.

Young people love tech and screens, so tech sells and you can't avoid it nowadays. I bought a new Challenger 392 T/A over 4 years ago. Dodge wouldn't sell me a plain jane Challenger with a 392 Hemi and a 6 speed, so I'm stuck with a bunch of electronics I don't use. I've wondered how long that screen will last. I have a cheap Kawasaki and a Sportster. Neither has fancy screens, so I'm keeping them.

After warranty, the TFT instrument cluster alone for the '24 Street Glide costs $2755.94. Add a couple of hours replacement labor to that. Harley bases their feature updates on customer feedback, so touring model buyers apparently want the bikes dominated with fancy digital displays. If they didn't update to them, we would be hearing the same old "Harley is antiquated and behind the times" cliche.

My 1999 TC88 has a Dakota Digital gauge that covers everything I need and the stock idiot lights, my concern was the Cam Sensor going out so I've ordered a Daytona Twin Tec ignition module to cover that problem as you can't get those sensors anymore, everything else is basic electronics that I can fix or replace, I even run globes in my lights instead of LED as I can get globes at a petrol/gas station for cheap and easy fix and I don't like throwing an entire light away cause you can't replace one part. So no I'm not concerned with Skynet until it goes online and sees humans as a threat. 😉
