I find your videos extremly helpful, but there is one little thing that bothers me. Are you using copper paste on the screw threads? I was taught not to grease the threads with anything unless the book tells to do so. A lubricated thread can supposedly break if tightened to the specified torque. What do you think about this? (please excuse my bad english)

My Iron XL 883N 2017 model has double NN pads only back. When i change the front pads about 24.000km i put them double NN EBC break pads but they kept whistling, I did about 4.000 kilometers and the noise didn't go away, So I had to put it in the middle category EBC break pads. Τhe rear wheel was original Double NN pads. I replaced it because they were also squeaking and I had to constantly rub them with sandpaper 600. Ι put the middle category again and everything stopped. I know that the middle category gets fewer kilometers, but the noise is also terrible.

Recently replaced the pads on my 2000 Road King from some high performance pads that would lock up the front wheel way too easly. Put on standard pads that give far better feel but they squeal like pigs now... Should i put some copper paste on the back of the pads or?
@killerdublin2 ай бұрын
Hey Del saw some comments on putting copper grease on the back of the pads. I always do that. I hate squeaks. But am I over doing it. Is the copper grease necessary. Has the technology changed since I started doing break pads back in the 80s. It is a pain lubing up the back of the pad because you obviously have to be very careful. Also that lube on the back of the pad is going to pick up and hold extra road dirt. What's your thoughts. If you think its not necessary I will give it a miss on my next break change. You haven't steered me wrong yet.
@Moonfleet412 ай бұрын
You talk about the 80's mate, I haven't had brake squeal on a bike of any kind in many years, so not something I have to deal with... certainly since using these pads it seems to have been eliminated.

Only 1mm of pad left after 6000 miles? Is that because Harley persist with only fitting a single disc to some of their heavier bikes? Or did your OEM pads have less braking material than the replacement EBC pads? I know my bikes OEM spec Brembo pads are a lot thinner than EBCs. It will be interesting to see how many miles you get out of your EBCs.

Great video as per, when I take front pads out for a maintenance check, I normally just spray clean with brake cleaner, and if pads are OK to replace, I personally scuff them up, would that be ok
@Moonfleet412 ай бұрын
Big old wives tail there mate.. scuffing up old brake pads doesn't make them work any better, they'll polish off again within a few brake pulls, and you're only scratching away pad material and accelerating thier wear to run out sooner.. better time investment is changing the brake fluid on time and keeping the caliper pistons spotlessly clean so they never jam up..!
@skyhill42792 ай бұрын
Always enjoy your videos Delboy, many thanks. Why did HD use metric fasteners on their bikes for certain items? Even if the component is made in a foreign country surely they should insist on imperial fasteners etc? I've came up against that on my 95 FLSTN on certain components...a real pain if you chew up a socket head bolt! Keep the videos coming sir! 🇮🇲
@Moonfleet412 ай бұрын
Looked on the inside of that little shiny spring plate... says "Nissin" stamped in tiny letters..!! i guess that answers it.. they source brake components from Japan becasue they're cheaper than making them in the USA. and possibly better quality.. so if cost is the reason, i imagine insisting on SAE fasteners would bump that up..!
