Hey John, I have a 2016 Ultra Limited with 13,000 miles. I put new tires on 3,000 miles ago, Michelin Comanders. It was happening at low speed, but now at 50mph I sometimes get a very, very bad wobble in the front. It doesn't happen all the time, but does happen often.

Great videos! Keep em coming! Anytime I repair a front end collision on a bike I replace the front bearings and races. If it hit hard enough to bend the forks, triple tree or the neck it's always a good idea to replace the Bearings and races. I've come across cracked bearing cages (housings) on bikes that I repaired. The bearings have to come out to do front frame repair anyway, and that's when I inspect them. I look forward to your videos, they're very informative.

that one tool that your putting the races in with I made a tool just about like the one that your using. Got a couple foot 5/8's all thread, some real hard washers and nuts.use 2 washer on each side to keep from bending. Works just like yours. Be safe

I own a street glide and to get to the steering head bearings is a $250 ish job in labour new bearings are a no brainer. You will be amazed how many people don't replace inexpensive parts only to pay twice for the job to be done later. Either that or they skip jobs like fork oil changes and wonder why odd amounts of grey gloop isn't as good as fresh oil.

Love your vids I also went to MMI but in Phoenix. I'm not a tech anymore but still play in my garage on my bikes. 1970 Suzuki t500 cafe and a 98 dyna lowrider. A cheap way to get a scissor lift is to take one out of a car and have plates welded on the top and bottom works great and I think I got 20 bucks in it. Just wanted to say keep up the good work...

I have never seen the Neck Races done before. Lisle makes a tool for pressing in Seals and Races. Its for Automotive. Only does one race a time. The HD tool pulls both in together. I'm guessing not a lot of torque is needed? The Jack you used, I bought one from Northern tools. Only cost me $100 or so. Mine came with Adapters to grab high frames. Since I store mine in the garage, And it doesn't get used much, I Oiled the Threaded Rod

John, great videos! I have subscribed and really like the instructions. I just greased the neck bearings on my 2017 Street Glide 30K service. Totally agree with you about just replacing the bearings since it takes so much labor to get down to the frame. On this model, the frame head section is a single contained tube with upper and lower races. It looks like it would be easy to drill, tap and install a zerk grease fitting. Had I been prepared, I would have installed it. By the way, the bearings had very little grease and at 2 years in service, there was a small amount of wear lines appearing.

I have a 2008 cross bones. Just got it. Trying to remove passenger pegs. They're what seems to be screwed on swing arm. When I lossen them the whole peg/mount just spins. Do you know if there is a bolt going threw the swing arm that the peg screws onto? Appreciate any help.

hey bro iv just fitted saddle bags on a fat boy 2017 for a friend with rear foot pads but the low cater pin is out due to the bracket for the bags on the exhaust side do you have to grind the frame part back for it to recess back ?

Matt S. I replaced neck bearings. Wheel bearings and tires. Still had the wobble. Replaced fork oil and fixed it. But that was on my Dyna. Good luck getting it fixed.

Question 2017 ultra classic 12 k miles bike was feeling loose that it was the tires where bad felt slippery at freeway speeds so I changed tires to c2 bike feel better but feels loose like the road is slippery uneasy at 65 plus 2800 rpm ?? At idle in neutral if I rev motor feel lots of vibration at 2800 rpm I had the new tires rechecked and are balanced not sure what causing the bike too feel off not sure what to check or torque

I'm a big fan of Zerk fittings in steering necks, and I did make that mistake with a Dyna >once< - now if I'm servicing a front end for a preferred customer, I will take the time to epoxy a thin sheet metal plate over that hole inside the steering neck and install neck bearings with rubber lip seals so the grease doesn't dribble all over the fender when it gets hot.

Thoughts on Softail Steering Head Fall Away Adjustment? I know on my bike ('06 Night Train) it is needed. A while ago HD had a thicker washer you could get to replace the paper thin washer that was there from the factory, torque to 80lbs (not sure how I remember that number) and ride on. No more adjustment needed and it fixes the legendary Softail Clunk when making quick stops. I don't know if those washers became standard on newer bikes or not. Did they? I can't find the washer on HD's web site anymore either. Did they decide they were a bad idea and discontinue them or come out with a better solution? Thanks.

I have no idea what you’re talking about. So I’m not sure if it became common place or it didn’t work. There is no way a washer replaced the need for an adjustment, though. It should still be checked every 10k miles. It doesn’t always need it, but it should certainly be checked.

Hmm... My google-fu is strong today. I found one of my oooold posts on an HD forum about this with part numbers etc. HD service bulletin: M-1215-A. Part number: 45740-07 (steering head washer kit). Install instructions: -J04469. From what I remember the factory super-thin lock washer was only torqued down to a very small amount. The lock washer was the kind where you bend a tab down into a big cog-style adjuster nut to prevent the nut from backing out. As a result of the low torque, and therefor pre-load on the bearings, the triple trees would sometimes 'clunk' when coming to a quick/hard stop due to things slipping in the steering neck. The replacement washer is pretty thick, relatively, and torqued down considerably more and illuminates the clunk. I tried searching for that part number etc on the HD web site but it came back with nothing. Any ideas/thoughts?

How often John Maxwell should you have to adjust/tighten the neck bearings? My 2011 street glide now has 48 k miles on it i have only owned it for a couple years but in that time those bearings were tightened by harley under warranty about 5 to 6 times in a 20-30 thousand mile period. In 8 harleys and a rigid chopper i never adjusted any of those bikes neck bearings or did i have to replace them. All being older bikes softails i has 2005,2003. 2005 rigid 2002 electra glide 2004 dyna. not one of those did i ever have to mess with the neck bearings other then grease them. Now my 2011 is out of warranty and once again they need to be tightened. i complained about the neck bearings figuring that they might replace them but they never did and once again about 5 thousand miles they would say they needed to be tightened. Stating it as regular maintenance. Is that excessive? Thanks for your channel and any help advice.

service interval is in the owners manual, I'm pretty sure it's every 10k miles, but I have a "cheat sheet" for my services, so I can't be sure without one in front of me.

When should the neck bearings be lubricated/adjusted? I have a 2008 CVO Road King with 32000 miles. To my knowledge, the neck bearings have never been lubricated/adjusted. I bought the bike used in 2004 with 2600 miles . If you could reply, I would appreciated.

the 08 models do have a grease fitting. They get greased every 10k miles and adjusted every 25k. If you take it to the dealership for services (not oil changes) then it's been getting done without you knowing it. If you just go for oil changes, or do it yourself, you've been skipping them!

That is awesome video John specifically the Jack you recommended, I was looking to get one and that is the one I am going to order, also any recommendations for hydraulic jack that will lift the whole bike of the ground, that will handle a 2018 fat boy? Thanks for the videos

You can always use a small scissor jack with brake disk welded to it.
