At the Summit in Houston, Jan, 1979. NWA Title Bout. Harley slams Andre YEARS before Hogan & does it WAY better, as Hogan's looked more like a hip toss or something. Please comment if you like it & want to see more!

André already had a lot of wear and tear on him in 1979, but he could still wrestle a match. Sadly, the era of him doing dropkicks and moving quickly was history at this point. People who only know him from the '80s and early '90s will never understand what he meant to wrestling fans in the '70s. He was only 32 when he had this match with Harley - he might as well have been 10 or 15 years older, you can already see the damage he had done to his body over the years.

This is just about the time that the growth hormone was making him sick and his body was just beginnibg to betray him . He was so used to pain that he walked around for a week with a broken ankle before waking up one morning to find he could no longer bear weight on it . Thats where the myth about breaking his ankle getting out of bed came from . His height went from 7 feet to 6'10.5" but no one noticed because his girth was getting out of hand at 540 lbs . If you look he has a big stomach but there is no jiggle to it . His internal organs were growing faster than his muscle and bone did . Giant sized liver and circulatory system made him the undisputed drinking champion of the world . When Andre died he was only 6'9" but still over 500 lbs . He died of congestive hesrt failure . It just could not keep up any more . Andre's back had two big iron rods in it , his knees and neck were bone on bone and full of spurs . If only Andre did not fear the scalpel he could have halted his growth when his height was 7' and his weight was 385 lbs . He thought they would botch the surgery and he would die of a stroke or be in a wheel chair so he decided to live as well as he could for as long as he had .

First time I've seen Andre the Giant in his prime. Going up against another big guy Harley Race. Harley took some brutal blows from Andre that would otherwise result in pin fall from any smaller wrestler and or wrestler of weak will. Harley dished them out as well keeping the Giant on his toes. For them being both big guys they are very athletic and have plenty stamina being this is a 3 Fall Championship match. Loved it from beginning to end, new school can't top old school, just can't.

Hell of a strength move for Race to slam Andre. Sure, Andre let himself get slammed--notice how he puts one arm down when he's just about to be slammed to break his fall somewhat--and Race doesn't really slam him hard to the ground, just sort of lets him down a bit more gently. Great selling by both champions. Race was one tough, strong, SOB. Not strong as in weight-training strong, but natural strength and strength picked up through wrestling. Andre was just terrifyingly powerful at that time. Pity he didn't live that long, and now Race is gone. RIP to both men.

HARLEY knew that the only way that he could beat ANDRÉ was by slamming him outside the ring on a ciment floor. In the second fall ANDRÉ could have literally killed HARLEY by doing the same but he pitched him in the ring. This is ANDRÉ when he was at his peak.ANDRÉ's best matches were against DON LÉO JONATHAN(MONTREAL 1972),STAN HANSEN(JAPAN 1981) , BLACK JACK MULLIGAN(several great matches through the years) and HULK HOGAN(in PHILADELPHIA 1980).His last great opponent besides HULK was BIG JOHN STUDD.After 1985,ANDRÉ was not the same wrestler because of his back that had him unable to give his best.ANDRÉ was without a doubt, wrestling's greatest star in the world from 1972 ro 1984.To go againt ANDRÉ in 1979 took a lot of guts.
