This popped up in my feed and it was at the perfect time. Working on a ground up shovelhead project and you saved my ass. I hadn't checked these for clearance figured they were good to go from the manufacturer. I did have to take one head back off and tear down but better now then when I fire it up and things start breaking. Thanks for taking the time to make this video.

just change the lower collar to the style that are open so the seal goes down further
@dennytuma9 ай бұрын
on an evo james tells you to push them on a quarter of an inch no need to bottom them out can't see why a shovel would be different
@Rapsgarage9 ай бұрын
At 2:18 in the video I explain the upper spring keepers will hit the seals. The Shovel heads are different then the EVO's. The Shovels never came with valve seals from Harley. kzbin.info/www/bejne/oGHcY2SqlMaZrs0 This video shows how to check the clearance for the seals and springs. This also shows if you have to do more work for a high lift cam. kzbin.info/www/bejne/fYnLoGltg95lpLc

not arguing just didn't think there was that much travel but I haven't messed with too many shovelheads. But I like to learn. I was looking at kibblewhite's site and if I'm reading their picture and the measurement they give correctly I think they have the right length ones.
@Rapsgarage9 ай бұрын
I did think you were arguing. The better companies make the guides ready to go for the seals and higher lift cams. Thank you for commenting and watching.

@@Rapsgarage Rap, honestly you made it simple where most talk about their houses cars animals wives lol, i have an 80 sturgis with white smoke out of front cylinder when hot on tick over, csan you guess my issue i think stem seal, motor has no leaks and was rebuilt 1k ago ?
@Rapsgarage2 жыл бұрын
@@briankent6540 Thank you! Sounds like it could be valves seals. If you have more trouble you can email me at hdrap_1999@yahoo.com and I can help more

That lip you ground off on the lower spring retainer keeps inner spring in the center. Without that lip the inner spring is not in the center anymore and can touch the seal moving it off
@Rapsgarage Жыл бұрын
No chance of that what so ever. The lip I ground off does not touch the inter spring and is very thin. The inter spring would hit the outer spring before that could happen. Thank you for watching

great video, thanks. appreciate your patient calm detailed explanation. is there a clean non-destructive way to remove an old stubborn valve seal?
@Rapsgarage2 жыл бұрын
I grab them with a pair of plyers but that destroys them every time. I never reuse them since they are cheap. other then that I don't know. Thank you for watching.

whats the tolerance between the seal and guide so they dont slip off when installed? my guide is .542. im thinking i need .530 seals bc the .562 are too big.
@Rapsgarage Жыл бұрын
I’m not sure. The seals come in the gasket kit when I but it.

Why not order lower retainers that are meant for seals to begin with? Great quality video, BTW.
@Rapsgarage3 жыл бұрын
The lower retainers will except the cheap seals. I’m not aware of any other kind since these are stock H-D.
