Harley Softail Has The Unique Harley Engine

Harley Softail has the one engine no other Harley has in what is known as the B motor. Harley doesn't make changes unless they are forced to. One of the ways Harley will change something is when it comes to style. The Harley Softail has a unique frame and look, the rubber mounting system just wouldn't fit in the Harley Softail frame. With the Harley Softail engine they mounted the engine in a rigid configuration with the Softail engine having internal counter balancing. The Harley Softail B motor is a real give and take but it does provide a slightly different ride.

You should take a look at Shadetree Surgeon’s video when he rides his Shovel from the West coast to Florida. By the end with multiple stops in between, his bike was being held together with duct tape and wire. I get the nostalgic craze over Shovel’s but they are a piss poor design by AMF. Pan heads were beautiful and still are.
@davidleonard8369
@davidleonard8369 Жыл бұрын
@@getoffmygrass6974 well, AMF also designed the evolution engine. Just imagine if the AMF nova engine would have been put into production. By the way the shovel was introduced in 1966 as the generator shovel and later became the alternator shovel with the cone shaped timing chest. AMF didn’t acquire Harley Davidson until 1970.

Folks I’ve been on a Harley since 1976, the vibration is because the they run the Primary “LOOSE “ the factory spec 10lbs downward force perpendicular to the chain length that will yield a 3/8-5/8 deflection NO MORE than that! If you ever let it run loose, you must change the primary along with the compensating sprocket assembly! If you don’t change both and try to just adjust it correctly you will have the unfortunate experience of a broken compensating weldment, I’ve seen other folks have that experience, oh I’m not talking out my ass either I’ve wrenched my whole life on Bikes, cars, Aircraft as a A&P, and long haul trucks, and heavy log’n equipment. The reason is when the chain is allowed to run loose, the vibration with the uneven stretch work hardens the compensating sprocket weld joint making it brittle. Plus the primary now has uneven stretch and when it’s tightened correctly, it won’t be long until the compensating sprocket assembly’s failure is now imminent. My 1977 Shovel Head would pulse at idle and run absolutely smooth as running a easy-boy recliner at seventy on a road of smooth glass. Fix it right, maintain it right, it’ll do you right, and it’ll out last you .

Install a Baker DD6, and it'll cruise at 80 mph turning around 3100 RPM. Smooth as butter. 3500 RPM gets you around 90 mph, and it's also smooth. About 3850 RPM RPM brings you to 100mph. It's a bit buzzier, but not that bad for extended cruising time. 😁😁😁 Cheers!

What up Foo! So I have an “A” & “B” both 2002. The oil bag is above the starter and exposed oil lines in the “B”. Yes, you can pull the balancers out of the M8 but you won’t have the same effects with the TC “B” , your teeth will rattle out of your head, not worth it, IMO. The “B” also is longer which creates a longer primary. 60k on my “B” stage 2 no issues. You’re right about the idle, smooth as glass on my Night Train where as my Electra Glide “A” stage 4 bounces and shakes like crazy at idle, I love it. While the “B” motor can be a bit buzzy at high rpm’s it also has a smooth point at about 78mph where your mirrors are perfectly clear. You will still get a little bounce at idle with the “B” with certain cams. Big bonus about the “B”, hardware doesn’t rattle loose and fall off.

Replacing the rear rubber mounts on the Road King A motor, sucks. The bike got squirly around 90,000 and when I took out the old rubber I could see why. It's kind of frightening to know that systems of rubber is all that holds the rear drive in place. I replaced mine at 92,000 miles and at one point I thought I wouldn't get it done right. I am at 112,000 miles now and it handles well but I would feel safer on a bolted to frame motor; After all this was designed by the same dude that designed Nortons back in 1970

I have an ‘03 FatBoy and a ‘15 Ultra Limited. Both are twin cams and truthfully, I haven’t noticed either having too much vibration.

I've rode a lot of different Harley's but my night train soft tail 96 B is very smooth I hardly ever have bolts vibrating loose it's comfortable with the apes I put on it . I can put on serious miles without all the vibration and it's been real reliable and with cams and Dyno tune it runs real good I keep right up with most A engines so parasitic power lose is really minimal almost not noticable. I have a friend that has a 103 A motor he has same cams Dyno tuned and my 96 B almost Dyno nearly the same HP and torque he's just slightly more than me but on the highway I stay right with him. At an idle it sits and doesn't shake hardly at all there's a little vibe in the middle of the power band but really not that much either.

Well owning a Yamaha cruiser, there is some vibration at idle and that's good. So I'd go with the B motor that has the slight shake.

While i am admittedly a fan of the vibration, i wonder what the long term effects of removing an enginered counterbalancer is on longevity? Would love to see that addressed, because reliability is my first priority, i knoe evos shook and they ran forever, but if they designed it to be run one way and you change it id be curious to see who ends up in the shop in 30k miles and who doesnt

My 2006 Road king Custom shakes really nice at a light. As soon as you roll on its very smooth. I like it this way. Get alot of compliments at the lights. I road a 107 M8 once. didnt really like it. too smooth. May have something to do with his M8 ultra limited was 100lbs heavier than my Road king custom... Never selling my Road King Custom now that I have gear drive 509G cams and a tune, its just right.

Let's ask this question then. What difference have you seen in performance between the dyna and softail engines because of the oil reservoir tank locations? I've had both and didn't notice much per say, but would have to think there is a difference when building a higher horsepower engine with heat distribution! Anything on the difference?

A few months back. I asked you what cam you would put in a 2016 low rider s. With the 110 engine. For good torque all those the power band. I forgot what you said. It was a woods cam. Thank you

In a low Rider S you might like the TW-555, those work really well in Dynas. But a good all around cam is the TW-222

Yeah : we have put the “A” flywheels in the “B” engine and tossed the balancer’s and chains . The guy said it vibrates no more than an evo . Well the “b” is smooth up till 70 mph and then it gets vib where the “a “engine vibs at idle and gets smooth all the way up . Yes we have seen the balancers chain tensioner wear shoes almost wore through . 50000 + .miles . Some others using amsoil 150000 not much wear . ✊🏻👌👍🙏👋

Rubber dries, becomes brittle and can crack over time. Many people neglect to install new rubber mounts when needed. Degradable parts are annoying. Except for maybe tires, no one likes doing the boring work of having to replace rubber parts that will need to be replaced again as time goes on. Rigid mount engines don’t need any of that. Sacrifice of 2 HP for basically lifelong zero maintenance is fine by me. You easily get that 2 HP back and more when you do a Stage I, tune, etc so you won’t miss it.

I had a 4 speed rigid mount chain drive Sportster so an evo FXDL was a world apart, the shake at idle was way more than my TC88 FXDL which feels more like a big sportster, more down to whether you need to see in the mirros than anything else. Wouldn't go back to an EVO. don't want EFi or 6 speed.
