Agreed, that’s a slick tool! I’ve only ever seen the dies you tap (carefully!) with a mallet. I’m referring to the race installer he used to do the top and bottom races before installing the bearings onto the stem.

I’ve always enjoyed your videos. This one doesn’t disappoint either. One question, when you installed the bearing onto the triple tree I couldn’t help but notice that you didn’t “properly” pack the bearing. You just smeared the outside of the rollers. Is there a reason for that?

Again, I really enjoy all your videos. On my humble Sporty build, I traded my Hugger fork tubes, for the standard tubes,.That extra 50mm of suspension travel, with shims, and thicker oil really gave me a better, low budget ride. you would probably have to slide the tubes up the trees for your build, which would compromise the finished look. Keep up the great work!

From watching this video, I discovered a solution to a problem that I am facing in regard to installing new neck bearings on my Softails. My '84 and '99 still have their factory original bearings so I haven't ever had to solve the problem before now. Now I know how I will do it. 😎

It's getting exciting to see the bike really taking shape now but at the same time I don't want to see this series conclude. It's been so great watching every chapter. Apologies Del, It's easy for me to say I'd like the series to go on indefinitely since I'm not the one putting in all the hard work. I guess what I'm trying to say is you and Penny are bringing a lot of joy to us with this project. Many thanks indeed ! God bless and stay well. ❤👍👍

I agree completely, Mr. Rick! It's enjoyable watching because you can clearly see the drive to do as good a job as he can do, in even the smallest areas. Machine-like perfection isn't nearly as interesting as seeing someone do their very best work because they understand how satisfying it is to know that "I did my very best". That love of your work shines through in the finished project. It got that way by doing your very best on the small stuff AND the big stuff. That's what makes a project stand out. This is FAR more enjoyable than watching someone bolt on brand new CNC perfection made in a sterile factory. Del's scooter looks ALIVE.

Thank you Rick, if it doesn't sound conceited, then I know exactly what you mean, I picked up a guy once building a Chevy Nova from a 4 door wreck in to a 2 door cool custom car at home in his garage in Canada over 2yrs, and I never wanted it to end! It was a sad day when it was finished because the journey had been so much fun!... but rest assured, we'll keep it going and do the best I can with this one, then when it's finished, we'll hopefully be able to roll in to something that's equally as interesting and start a new chapter for you to enjoy. Thank you so much for being candid and supportive, it means a great deal and really motivates us! D&Px

Hey Renzo, good to hear from you brother, hope you're both well?! Glad you're enjoying the project, we wanted to take the look of a cruiser bike completely away from the Harley so lifting the back end with a taller back wheel and higher suspension will, hopefully, make it look even better in the next video... I can't quite remember the exact size of the garage, it's quite a large place which we both share for our respective work, I wish it had large open doors to roll a car in, and if it did, I imagine it would maybe be 3-4 cars wide and perhaps 2 cars deep, but sadly with just a regular door it's only any good for bikes, which is perhaps why the rent is affordable! Take care and have a fabulous weekend both of you, D&Px

They shouldn't do mate, the Nightsters run under slung mirrors, which would hang lower than these bars, and they don't touch the tank... Harley tanks are pretty narrow and many custom Sportsters run clip-ons successfully, it's all just a case of setting it all up once the tank's fitted!

Great vid as usual Delboy, good to see her coming together now. Why don`t you use those clip-ons as they are, do you think the slotted spacing ring is not strong or secure enough to use on the road?. I know you said about being on a bit of a tight budget, so why not use the clip-ons as they are, it will save a fair amount which you can spend on other things?.

Thank Neil, i have been thinking about it as i do like the lifted bracket to make them a little higher.. and yes the spacer rings are more then secure enough to use.. but they are still 7/8th" bar diameter, and will need to be 1" diameter if im going to use them.. so I'd need to make some new bar tubes to go into the brackets..! perfectly possible, so it's definitely a consideration..!

Hi Del. Inspirational video once again. I found your channel through searching for XR1200 maintenance. What did you think of that bike? I have a small “remark” but you might find it interesting for the future, but I’ve always learned not to touch bearings barehanded. In aviation it’s standard practice not to touch them barehanded to avoid contaminating them with our skin’s oil & greases. Maybe you’ll appreciate my little “but you know this” remark 😉. Keep up the good work and lovely builds. 👍

I am NOT going to try and second guess what this is going to end up looking like!! I am just going to be really patient and enjoy each little slice as it comes. Honest. Really. (Polished alloy tank, chromed mini guards, race hump....!)🤣🤣🤣. Nice one Del. I remember rattle canning in the shed episodes!! Deservedly come a long way, mate. Love to penny pitstop.

Thanks Phil, that's a great style suggestion, I have to admit, I haven't even thought of the tail hump/unit styling, I can't afford a polished alloy tank, there is a company locally that could make one, but it's just not in the budget, they're ferociously expensive... I've just ordered the rear set foot controls and the price of those was eye watering enough!!! But gonna do my best to create a unique and recognisable custom bike! Have a great weekend mate.

Nice work Del, I'm impressed with the bearing press too. I will look into getting one and ask a couple of mates if they fancy a shared ownership as it's expensive for something that will have such infrequent use. You are one of the main inspirations for my plans to build a custom bike, thank you 😀👍

Hi Michael, that's a great idea, we used to call those 'club tools', something you may only use once in a blue moon, but shared between a group of mates they'll get a fair amount of use overall! We're doing a great deal on them through Spanner Monkey, a lot cheaper than buying direct from Sealey, so here's the link if you need it mate: www.spanner-monkey.co.uk/steering-bearing-press-motorcycle-119015?search=SMC3&description=true

Thanks You two ...... been watching for some years now and it never gets boring, and totally enjoy your attention to detail. I think it calms my OCD Lmao. Plus I love the fact that it shows that you CAN take a tired and weathered bike and make it not only look new but also make it your own......rather than just going out and buying what ever the newest trend is at the local dealer. Plus gives the average Joe/Jane a nudge towards do it yourself, give it a go and learn something,. Not too mention you have created a massive how to library, over the years. Bit of a legend ..... just saying.

Hey Andy, thanks mate for those wonderful, kind words of support... we started out all those years ago to make some videos just for sharing a service procedure on a Harley, when I saw how much they charge at the dealer, especially when it's housekeeping service work that anyone can do at home with some basic hand tools... and things kinda grew from there! Great to have you along and we do appreciate all your loyal support, and it's always good to hear from you, have a great weekend, D&Px

Looking good del,the rear brake on a 1500 wing should it be spongy to the point it moves about 3 ins or does it need the fluid changing,picked it up on Tues
@Moonfleet41
@Moonfleet41 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Andy, the rear brake pedal also serves the front left caliper at the same time, it's not a complicated system, just two brake hoses coming from the master going in opposite directions, so if it was me, you could just bleed them both through and it should improve it... the rear brake system on them isn't actually that effective, but that sounds like a lot of brake pedal movement to me, and remember if it's got old rubber hoses still there could be a little expansion in them, so upgrading to braided could improve them too!
