Those parts look like they are of incredible quality. That makes the high price of admission easier to justify. I'm old enough to remember when "Made in Japan" was something to avoid at all cost. Thank you Rick, initially I was restricted on options for such an early model Harley, there are many options for rubber mount engines (2004 onwards), but on this bike I think it was a choice of two in the end, so am glad it was a high end option, and happy that it really enhances the bike! @Moonfleet41
@Moonfleet41 Жыл бұрын
I can say from experience that certainly applies with the Red High strength stuff, any more than a single drop and it's like trying to get a seized bolt out, with with the blue medium stuff i find a couple of drops works well and pay attention to the torque settings as a wet thread needs less torque applied as im sure you know !

Looks like a handy conversion kit for those in the market. It looked like the 2 long hex bolts that go into the bottom of the engine casing for the gear lever seemed to be the originals. @Moonfleet41
@Moonfleet41 Жыл бұрын
They are indeed the factory bolts on the gear linkage mount, the basic printed directions did state that some OEM fasteners would be reused..! but as the plate, and spacers on that mount were the same thickness as the original foot peg mount, at least there was the same amount of thread into the engine casing !! Watching the Sportster build this afternoon, I was struck by two things First, I find it very interesting that today we look at products from Japan for quality. 60 years ago, I would have been saying, "You bought Japanese junk instead of American or British quality???" How times have changed. Second, I think you missed a 'teaching moment' today with the reversed shift lever. Being reversed, it now shifts, up for 1st and down for the rest. Same as the old AMC & Ducati 'ice cream cone' singles. I am sure there are many in your audience that do not realize that. In fact you might make yourself a note, in order to remember in the near future when you take that first test ride. I remember back in 1967 when I traded an A7 BSA for a new Triumph, I must have revved the Triumph to 8-9000 RPM when I made a shift from (what I thought was) Second to third. 🤣
@Moonfleet41
@Moonfleet41 Жыл бұрын
How times have changed indeed mate.. the old term "Jap Crap" is history now aye! Regarding the reversed shift lever, what you say is right if the lever is mounted directly onto the spline shaft.....But take a look again at the video at 6:55.. notice how the linkage makes a double reverse, so the gears work as normal..!!! In fact it's even more clever than that, If I mount the spline shaft lug facing backwards (as i have), it works as normal. But, if I wanted to reverse the gear change then i just rotate the spline lug so the tab faces forward...then it will work "race track stylee... Clever 'Jap Crap' aye buddy ..lol!

Great video delboy , I know this is off topic of the video so I do apologise but I'm in need of some advice if poss please , basically the new r1 rear axle tourqe specs in the service manual say 140flbs which is really high in my opinion and have heard a few horror stories of bending and breaking things , the 2014 r1 and fz1 take 108flbs which I thought was high at the time but now seems reasonable 😆🙈, I'm reluctant to give it factory specs of 140flbs and think it might be an error in the service manual , also they look like the same parts even on new bike as the older ones , I just don't want to damage anything it as many poeple do with those specs so do you think sticking to the 108flbs could be a safer option . Any advice would be much appreciated thanks guys 👍🏼

Very cool lay-down dragster vibe! One observation and question... is the rear master cylinder location going to be in the way of the foot placement? It looks like it's going to be kinda snug. Can't wait to see what's next on the list!

Absolutely love the varied content subject mix. A bit of Resto-Modding, original and imaginative Fabrication, handy Tips 'n Tricks, Maintenance, great film work and attention to detail- what's not to like? Colour me surprised at Sato Harley Rear sets! Who knew? lol! IMHO, one of the best sounding bikes ever, is a gear driven Honda RC51 with a Sato carbon exhaust system. 🤤

Thanks for keeping the Sportster models relevant. I have owned a number of motorcycles since 1964, but always had a Sportster in the barn. My first and last bike was a Sportster.

You say you intend to make a brass nut, will the strength of brass be sufficient? Perhaps phosphor bronze may be more suitable whilst maintaining the finished look.

Good rear-sets are vital, but did Sato REALLY have to take their cue from Forrest Gump's leg irons? (Sorry) In fairness to them, mounting-point wise, it is a bit barren back there & they do look well made - if complex. Saw an iron Sportster lump in a Norton 'featherbed' frame once, 'The Nortley Fartster' . . so much envy! : )xx

Love everything about this except the rear master cylinder location. Typical Harley fodder. No Japanese manufacturer would locate something that looks like it came of a 1985 Buick like that. Love the rest of the bike build guys!
