I had a friend who found you on Facebook! I've played melody for years, but never learned blues, riffs, bending notes, the train and I'm sure much more. My family has always played by ear and when I went to Facebook to try to learn more techniques, I was disappointed and discouraged, because the lessons weren't easy to follow or explained well enough to understand. Until I tapped on your link and I'm THRILLED to subscribe to your site! THANK YOU SOOO MUCH!

Well Tomlin, I live miles away from a railway and practicing 'the train' twice a day in our little township (in the Netherlands) my neighbours are getting more and more confused. So I wonder what a next exercise will be...an airplane? I have good fun here with your exercises. Let's "Keep up the Good Spirit" Thanks Tomlin. Kees

Good lesson mate. Just bought a harmonica but in D but i guess the positions are the same. I'm a total newbie and that wah sound is what i want, but after trying all morning to get a sound from the 2 hole draw i realise that this is a little advanced at the moment and i need to watch something that's beginner level. Oh well, i'll look through your other videos for some newbie lessons, this was a good watch nonetheless. I always thought that sound was made by doing some sliding bending thing but you didn't do anything of the sort....i also realise that mouth shape has a lot to do with that bluesy sounding harmonica.
@TomlinHarmonica8 жыл бұрын
+Jammy Git so happy you have started playing harmonica. Yes wah is quite advanced. I have a lesson on the 2 draw - kzbin.info/www/bejne/qHuQgYynorB7gKM I hope that helps
@JammyGit8 жыл бұрын
***** Yeh, cheers. I did subscribe to your website so i've had 7 or 8 of your beginner lessons so thanks for that. It's driving me up the wall trying to draw bend, i can't get it :-( There must be more to it than plain breathing in, are you supposed to position your bottom lip on the hole as if to restrict airflow, making drawing have some resistance due to to lip position? It's hard to explain, kind of like trying to breathe in through your mouth with your lips almost shut? At the moment my gob looks like a demented goldfish. Also i'm using a D key hohner big river, would you reccommend starting to learn with a D key? Most people advise C's to learn on but i'm not sure if 1 tone different is too drastic a difference.
@SillyHerpFamily7 жыл бұрын
How do I know that I am only hitting the right holes? So I know specifically this lesson is on the 123 but I have been wondering how I actually know I am not including 4 also. I admit I still do not have a lot of time on the harmonica yet. Just curious if there is something in your lesson plan or on your site that works with mastering my position on the harp. Thanks as always for all your videos. I am enjoying them!
@TomlinHarmonica7 жыл бұрын
+Andy Rea hi Andy, that is a great question. The best way to learn the positions of the notes is to practice your scales - pentatonic, blues, major. Doesn't matter which one you use. Although I would always push people towards the Blues Scale.

OK I wanna try to do this sometime. But I have one problem. Like I’m blind so I can’t really tell it what holes or what you’re doing when you do the mouth movement part. I wish there was an alternative instrument I could use to create the same sound. I have a melodic or which sort of sounds like a harmonica but probably won’t let you do those sounds.

Difficulty understanding tongue position for draw bend.
@patrickclark33379 жыл бұрын
Hey Tomlin, on your train horn sound, I know this lesson is for beginners so this doesn't apply to them, this is about how you personally do it. I slightly bend when entering into the horn, do you as well. You didn't specify that if you're able to bend, it sounds good to begin with a bend and slowly release as you do the horn, so I was curious if you incorporate a bend in your horn. I'm not trying to confuse or belittle any new players. I'm surely no expert, just a fast, passionate, fastidious learner, technically I'm a beginner too! This is just a personal query to the master(Tomlin)!
@TomlinHarmonica9 жыл бұрын
+Patrick Clark hi Patrick, yes a slight bend at the start of the whistle sounds ace and definitely a good idea when a player gets more comfortable.
@patrickclark33379 жыл бұрын
***** Thanks for the response, another quick question. In order of importance, use, necessity which harp is needed/used more G or D, the packs usually come with C A G. I tried talking my friend into getting me the 5 pk. with A C D G E, for my b-day, but she ordered the 3pk. even though it's cheaper, more cost effective, and better to get the 5pk. It comes with D and E and a zipper case for the same price as if she got the 3pk. And one more single harp, and you get no case! It's my money also, go figure!
