I like using harmonics on an intro and sometimes tied together with harmonics in the outro. I think the best usage overall of harmonics, though, is that of sparing use-- similar to tapping or slapping. I think that less frequent use of devices makes them much, much more powerful and memorable when employed.

Nice video! In order to not confuse the newbies, maybe you could have explained how the string is divided into equal parts, and then show the parts. For example, the octave+fifth harmonic at the 7th fret is also at the 19th. Two octaves is at the 5th fret as well as the 24th(plus you can touch any/all of the nodes of them without killing the note). Bonus round, you can also play in such a way as to have both the open string and one of the harmonics ring out at the same time. 😎

Ear training, playing broadcast channel 'songs' like ABC, NBC and CBS. I've also used them when playing sitcom tv show tunes, again for ear training. Wootens amazing grace floores me too the first time I heard it years and years ago. It was my introduction to him.

I use harmonics to test the setting of my bass,if it's not set up right,the harmonics won't ring where it's supposed to. And I find it easier to get them to ring is use my finger nail,put the string right by the fret let the string rest under your nail,that like holds the string so the harmonics ring beautiful

You might make the idea of dividing the string in for example three equal parts more clear by identifying the other harmonic node at the 19 fret and showing that the harmonic is the same. It could be useful to point out the waveform that does not then vibrate over these harmonic nodes ( you can see this!) And notice that because of this phenomenon if you stop the string at the 7th fret and play at the 19th you will be completely unsuccessful because the string cannot move at this point! (The math is cool too! 8ve vibrates 2x faster 7th fret is 3x faster, 5th fret 4x faster etc.) The higher a harmonic you play the more places there are to play it and also the more places the string will not move.)

I think you’re a great 👍 Musician. Also, your Teaching technique is great! You teach playing Bass Guitar fun! Hey Julia .. Cool lesson .. I knew some of the basics .. but Loved the way you used them . My only unusual experimenting with harmonics was using a combination of a fast repeat delay & a pair of light drumsticks ( & some of the Damping techniques you showed in other lessons . ) It's gr8 to have short concise tips & lessons . Even 'tho I have a long attention span .. ehmm what was I saying ? Lol Yes most people learn better in small " Bite's " I am absolutely new to slapping .. thats next .. Stay safe Bye

4th fret the third..wich one? The major third? yes of course, and this interval is to found also in the 9th fret. The 5th is not only at the 7th fret, it is present too in the 4th, but not allways ring properly in this position.

The overtones are slightly different if you play short scale bass, but I think the harmonics are the same.

Great video, I am just now learning the scientific terms for what i have been hearing all my life...I am not being lazy but can you suggest one of your videos that explains what harmonics are? I have been learning the bass for some 20 years now, off and on and I want to know it thoroughly...and scientifically...as you were speaking i remembered the frequency of the open D string is 73.416thousandth Hertz...learning all things this way helps clear up my naturally confused mind...
