I agree with your take on Van (B.C.) vs Ontario (Guelph). I have lived in Toronto, Ottawa, Gatinea (QC), Calgary and Vancouver the past 6 years. Winter weather in Ontario blows. I will take the rain in the winter time in Vancouver anytime. As well, the air is so much better in Vancouver (Ocean, Mountains and Trees). And, moving back to Toronto recently, damn - it's getting just as pricey as Van. Overall, the weather and million dollar view in Van are my fav.
@HarmonieV
@HarmonieV 6 жыл бұрын
I could not agree more! Most of my friends in Toronto actually pay more in rent than I do out here. I think having the ocean and mountains makes it worth the price, but I cant imagine paying that much for concrete alone hahah

But I heard that the cold in the winter months in Vancouver, it's a humid cold that hits you to the bones.
@victoriagreen1726
@victoriagreen1726 3 жыл бұрын
@@666mathew That's baloney! To be sure - there is such a thing as a more humid cold. But I take my cue from the testimony of people whom have lived on the Canadian west coast and say that the winters still feel much milder than dryer places. I've even heard former Vancouverites testify that Nashville - dryer and in the southern USA - has noticeably harsher winters than Vancouver (after having moved to Nashville). So don't allow anyone to exaggerate that 'humid' cold for you. Wind is a much bigger factor. And Vancouver has much lighter wind than the average city!

Hey Samantha! yeah i totally understand that, it's pretty hard to find a place that checks all of the boxes in terms of lifestyle, weather, city size and cost. on that scale vancouver ends up being pretty pricy, but it is quite ideal. Thanks for sharing your thoughts, 240 days of rain is insaaaaane. I'm glad you liked it though! :)

Can you please shed some light on: 1) winter clothes to survive winter/rainy season in Vancouver (what items to buy, when is the best time to buy, where to find good deals, etc.) 2) phone plans and internet (cost effective and have coverage for BC)

But after living downtown by the beach for so long I just think they're stupid now because they haven't grown, they're almost the same size as when i first got there. They're transplanted so they're not supposed to be there, and they just don't fit in.

The most common type of palm tree you will see in Vancouver is called Trachycarpus fortunei/Windmill Palm. And yeah. There is a lot of them. It is native to Mountainous regions of China. They are pretty cold hardy. Vancouver is Plant hardiness Zone 8b which is very high. It's easy to grow bamboo and banana trees here.

We moved to Victoria from Southern Ontario and the winters here are so much more comfortable. If you're a gardener, it's a plus. I do have a friend that lived in Vancouver, but moved back to Victoria because they complained it was too much rain. Here in Victoria, it's more like a mist. Good for you for making the move. Life is short.

I love the rain and what you said about how Vancouver feels is 100%. You don’t even have to go to Whistler which is a 2 hour drive because local mountains offer great skiing on the same day within 30-60 minutes. Many of those days there is skiing in the mountains and sunny outdoor beer patios in the city which is at sea even. Yes, it’s expensive to live here but wow is it wonderful!! Coming from eastern Canada, Vancouver is the closest to the ideal in Canada. I was shocked the first time I came here and saw palm trees at English Bay and I knew then that Vancouver was the place for me. When I did move here, many of my neighbors also grew palm trees in their front yards as part of their landscaping. That’s something I would never see in Manitoba , Ontario, or NFLD because they’d never survive the winter. The forests are always fresh and beautiful and there are pockets of them everywhere. The ocean smell and squawk of seagulls always made me feel cozy. In the city we rarely have pesky bug issues like mosquitos, black flies, no-see-ums, and horseflies to bother us. I have never had a screen door on my windows or doors and those living in eastern Canada will know what I mean when I say that concept was so foreign to me. 85-95 percent of the year I have my windows and patio doors open unless I have to turn on AC because it’s too hot. Yep. Too hot! Everywhere will have its issues but foe me, Vancouver is now my home.

I've been trying to decide whether to pick Toronto or Vancouver after I arrived in Vancouver in October and endured the rain and gray skies constantly and these were just the comparison points I was looking for. I really think it's Vancouver rain is a trade off with sub zero temperatures but only if you can deal with 6-7 months of rain. You've no idea how much your analysis has helped me. Thx a ton!

As a Sri Lankan watching this, when you said you wanted to move to a tropical island cause you were so done with the Canadian winters I was like "oh you have no idea what you're in for" and then you said you lived here and I was like "told ya." Our heat is as extreme as your snow, the humidity means no matter where you stand under the shade or even indoors, if you don't have air conditioning you will sweat and your sweat will stick to your skin and your clothes will be wet during our warm season. Our ideal clothing of choice is shorts or sarongs and nothing else cause it's hella uncomfortable during warm climates. That's why I want to move to B.C. for that sweet balanced weather and culinary diversity. See while it may be around 44 degrees C in the middle east, the air there is dry so stand in the shade and you're good; however, 30 degrees C in Sri Lanka with humidity is equal to 38-40 degrees on your skin. We have two temperature readings here: What the temperature is, and what it feels like.

BC rain is very special, it's a mixture of people being used to it to the point where even products and stores compensate with the weather, and a part of the amount of nature and the sound of plants being hit by rain or even the petrichor. All in all it's very relaxing and most people are very chill. Also coffee shops and bookstores are the best when its raining!

Coming from someone who has summer all year in her country (🇧🇷), a city with defined seasons is amazing and the cold isn’t a big issue because it’s so different from what I was used to growing up that it makes me appreciate it more.. I mean if you see snow everyday/every year, you’re like “oh no it’s snowing, the roads are gonna be terrible” etc but for someone who is seeing for the first times it’s always a great moment, you know? It’s nice to realize all these different points of view ☺️☺️ / Oh, and great video!!

@@HarmonieV You said the temperature almost never goes below zero in Vancouver. To an American, 0 degrees means 0 degrees Fahrenheit (or -18C). I assume much of the viewing audience is American. The best and most universal way to have expressed that weather fact would have been to say that Vancouver almost never goes below freezing. Freezing means freezing to everyone in the world - whether they use the metric system or not! So next time say Vancouver almost never goes below freezing during the whole course of the winter.

@@salsagirlTO Point taken. I knew about the USA and South Africa (I'm not positive whether-or-not South Africa has recently changed over?)? I wasn't sure about all the rest of them? However...the VAST majority of the people in the world that converse in degrees Fahrenheit ARE, in fact, American. The populations of those places you've listed are either small islands or very small countries. There would be so many more Americans watching these KZbin videos than people from these small places (the ones that just so happen to have internet connections, at that). So my judgment was that it's pointless to rattle off every nook-and-cranny while knowing full well the USA wasn't the only one (but does, by far, have the largest audience). Miscommunication with one person from some far out, obscure island isn't nearly as detrimental as miscommunicating with dozens of Americans - some of whom might actually decide to visit Vancouver and be influenced by the information in the video.

Hello! 👋🏻 I’m not sure if you are still answering comments but I have a question. I am traveling to New WestMinster from the American south in December for 4 days. Wondering whether I should pack for extreme cold or pack for rain (or both!). We will go somewhere for skiing so I know I need proper ski clothes. Would hiking be advisable in December?
@HarmonieV
@HarmonieV 5 жыл бұрын
Hey, great question. In New West Minister the weather will be fairly mild, it may reach a temperature below 0 degrees Celcius, but it will probably be a temperature between 0 degrees and 10 degrees. If you want to go skiing or head to the mountains, bring warm layers, a winter jacket and snow pants. I'm fairly sure if you don't have these things you can rent them. Hiking conditions will vary depending on the area and elevation you're going to. Some hikes won't have any snow at all, but if you go deeper into the mountains you might encounter more winter-like conditions. research different hiking trails online to give you a good idea. Best of luck, enjoy your travels!

I totally agree with you about the mild Vancouver weather, compared to colder and snowier places. I lived in Vancouver for about 10 years and I loved the weather, regardless of the rain. It reminded me of the 5 years I lived in Portugal as a teen. I love that snow doesn't typically stay for long in the city. Right now, I'm in Prince George, BC where it is so dry that I've developed eczema. It's horribe! We have winter season for approximately 6 months, and summer has appraently been replaced with wildfire season. Wtf!? I hope I can find a way to live in Vancouver again one day. I’m considering moving to Vancouver myself as I’m looking for a career change and I must admit the difference in weather would certainly be welcomed compared to what I have been dealing with. this is a great video, thank you so much for making it! I live in Munich, Germany, and it's a great city, but I miss the ocean and from November till March it gets cold (constantly -2 to +8) and all the trees are dead. So I did a similar thing as you did, and said screw this and moved to Tel Aviv, Israel. Boy, was I wrong. I used to be drenched in sweat at 10 am from May till October. About that time I learned that there is such a thing called the dew point, and that I needed to respect it :) I've been thinking about moving to Colorado/California, but what I learned in Israel is that I missed the rain (it didn't rain for 5 months straight) and lush nature. I love working out outside and playing sports and going on hikes with friends discovering abundant nature. So, I've been thinking to move to either Britain or the Pacific Northwest, but never having lived there I am still unsure whether winter over there is really milder than here in Munich. As long as it is 12 degrees, I don't mind working out, even with a light drizzle, but anything below that and it gets to be unenjoyable...

I live in Ottawa right now because I went to school here, but I'm from Barrie, ON. My mom is from the Sault, and wants me to move there (I lived there briefly for 6 months out of necessity) but I will NOT move there again. I have created a life in Ottawa, but I really hate the freezing cold winters and humid summers that make my allergies go crazy. I didn't have allergies like this before I moved to Ottawa. I want to move to BC with my husband really bad, but it's going to be even harder to see family in Ontario. But we might just move anyways. YOLO and I'll probably love it! Thanks for the video! i live in Los Angeles where your experience of living a dry hot place matches my life in LA, summers are over 100 degrees for 2 months while the surrounding valleys are always on fire watch. I went to Vancouver 2 months ago and very much enjoyed my time there.I am very interested in considering a move there, my field is in Higher education administration jobs such as administrative coordinators, analyst, and working up to a dean of a school or program, is there a large job market in this field? I too am concerned about the Vancouver rainy weather compared to my one season all year long experience that I get with LA. Also, I'm wondering if the cold weather irritates one's joints living in Vancouver during the rainy months. do you feel the drop in barometric pressure effect you during those months?

Basically, you're right on. Spent my first 30 years in MTL. Next 12 in Van. Next 12 in St Pete, Fl. which is the Gulf Coast and far less humid than the east coast of Florida. Moved back to MTL a year ago, and after my first winter back, figured I might as well stay to enjoy this summer here, and then get my ass back to Van for the grand finale.

Hi, I'm from Srilanka and I love your videos. As you say, Srilanka is a tropical nation which has high temperature and evergreen all over the year. However, there are some cooler climatic zones in central highlands such as Nuwara Eliya, Mathale and Kandy. Anyway, majority of coastal beaches have quite high temperature. Srilanka is a country which can feel temperature different from 34C to 10C within just few hours due to small land size. Your description about climates are very valuable for us. I also hope to visit Canada near future and I'm glad that your information will help me in my future journeys.

I agree with your review on Vancouver weather. It's super mild for the most part and doesn't rain all year long as a lot of people have led others to believe. No better place to be in the summer time. Our winters are mild as well...maybe a bit too mild for some winter activities locally. I love the rain, so it's never been an issue for me. Lol.. don't base your decision to move here on weather alone. As we say it here, BC does not stand for British Columbia. It stands for Bring Cash. Everything is expensive here. Also, if you don't already have a good social base to come to, it might feel lonely and it can be hard to establish one. It's no secret, Vancouverites are snooty as F. A lot of people who come here, have a hard time making new friends. If were going on weather alone though, I will say, I have had friends move here from Calgary, only to move back because the rain left them feeling sad and depressed. Calgary is one of the sunniest places in Canada, even in the winter time. For me though, I like the rain and have never regretted moving here.
