There's a few things you forgot to mention, in my opinion. Yes, Jund is a place filled with strife and domination, but you're forgetting that it is the most free of all the shards. The absence of white and blue Mana means the absence of control and laws. Everyone and everything on Jund acts not just on instinct and emotions, but also their will. There is no one to tell them not to act on their will, or do whatever petty law states should happen. Yes, it's a world of anarchy and chaos, but those are the cost of freedom in its purest form. I also disagree with the notion that Jund lacks empathy for others. Green Mana is all about interdependence and Red Mana has every emotion under the sun, not just anger, but love, passion and loyalty. While Black Mana might not embrace these ideals, it acts on its will and its own self-interest to achieve its goals, which means looking out for others if they're of benefit to you, regardless of why or how they fulfill that role. There is empathy and love in Jund, it's just focused in a more tribal and individualistic way. Organized non-animal life on Jund reflects this. Tribes of goblins, humans and viashino make up the majority of the life on Jund that can show these emotions, and often do so without restrictions or restraint. In my view, there's no pretense when it comes to empathy on Jund, no filter of laws or forced morality. If you can get someone or your group on Jund to love you, they'll do so with every breath, and will go to any length to prove it. You mentioned in the Esper video that Esper spits on the notion of emotions in favor of rational thought and the importance of learning more. Jund spits on laws and rational thought in favor of valuing one's own emotions in their purest form and living one's life to the fullest. Jund is free, Jund embraces emotions, Jund would sooner be devoured than be controlled. That's what matters here.

An interesting and savage color combination...or is it?! You know me, I like trying to find unorthodox ways to interpret color combinations, so let's try and look at Jund's more cerebral and civilized side. First of all, we have three colors that all have a decent history of scholarship in their own right. Monored not as much as the others, but Red IS an important part of creative thinking, as we've seen. Black and Green though. Those two almost match Blue in terms of knowledge seeking! The big difference being that Blue wants knowledge for the sake of knowledge, while Black and Green tend to be a bit more practical in their applications. Black seeks knowledge to advance itself. In game this is mostly forbidden magical knowledge and the like, but a more real life application would probably be things like PoliSci, persuasive writing/speaking (ala Strixhaven), or military strategy (just one more way Black and White are more alike than they may like to admit). Green, on the other hand, wants to know it's place in the world, and part of that is knowing how the world operates. It also has strong connections with various fey and eldritch creatures in Magic. Real life, it's the sort of color to be interested in history (although not archeology. Living cultures only, please!) anthropology, sociology and most of the "soft" sciences ( a trait it shares with White), although it ventures into the harder sciences in the less theoretical fields: biology, geology, chemistry and the like. And all three colors have a very strong overlap into one field: Red's emotional knowledge and honesty, Green's desire to foster harmony and understand how we're all connected, and Blacks need to understand how to get ahead all lead Psychology as, perhaps, the most Jund field of scholorship! So, while the sterotype for Jund may be a ravening beast, it could just as easily be a therapist who helps you work out your emotions (Red) so you can be your authentic self (Green) and find personal happiness (Black). Or an anthropologist who studies various cultures and tries to preserve their traditions for posterity (Green) out of the belief that these traditions are beautiful (Red) and a strong dislike of an increasingly conformist and mono-cultured world (Black).

I really enjoy these videos as well, I feel like there isn't a whole lot of accessible discussion with tricolor combinations and that these videos are filling a much needed niche. So I think that Jund is the classic idea of State of Nature Man: cruel, brutish and short-lived. The chaotic wildness that is used to justify the sacrifice of freedoms for peace and safety (and then you get the Azorius). I think the counter example, and the counter-argument, is that it's pretty clear that humanity, like many other creatures, have always been pack animals. If you focus Jund in Green you have an interesting Wolf Pack mentality, almost like a weird Mirror-verse Abzan. You get communities that form out of mutual need where the strong lead but everyone has their place, and if you betray that community or can't contribute to it you no longer have its protection and may have its wrath. Empathy is possible here, but is paired with a ruthless and relentless drive to accomplish their goals. I think a great example of this would be the Fremen in Dune, a culture of desert-dwellers who have learned to survive by living as a part of their world, by their own cunning and by ensuring that the strongest and most-capable lead through trial by combat. The are stripped of their water so the living may survive. Theirs is a harsh and cruel existence, one where the individual sacrifices for the collective and that sacrifice must be repaid by the collective. It doesn't have White's structures but it does have community.

Jund is like Roko's Basilisk. Anyone who doesn't help it, is food for the machine; another meal in it's bloated belly. It's self aware and knows what it is and knows it is superior because of it's strength of will, and it's acceptance of the fact that it is a monster. A snake does not question its place in the world, nor why it waits in the grass for his 5th deer this month; it just does because it's belly is growling and it wants to be a bigger and fuller snake than it was yesterday

As many have expressed before me, I too feel like this is a very animalistic and raw view on Jund. In my opinion, the Red in Jund specifically represents a connection through empathy, based on intuition or wisdom, when Green enters the scene. Unlike with White, where the goal is to establish some form of Order, with Jund, the goal is to establish a place in which you and others may grow, heal and overcome. I believe that in Jund, Black speaks most of motivation. In my view, Jund is aimed at helping others, but because that helps it in some way as well. That is not to say that Jund is neither compassionate nor empathetic -- that is to say that it sees and plans unlike White and Blue, but like Black and Green. In other words, I'd say it like this: through a connection with others and intuitive wisdom, Jund does what is required, so it may lead and conquer; natural born leaders that realize their self-centreness, have the boldness to request its realization, due to which they get the satisfaction, which in turn allows them to utilize their empathy to help others. In this shard, the colours work together to form a cycle: each colour fuels the next. Breaking that cycle is Jund's weakness.

Wow. I am really enjoying watching the color pie videos. I am going through the ones that I think is closest to red. With this I gain a whole new understanding for how Jund works. Red is an aggressive and impulsive color. The one trait that really carries over is freedom. Then there is Rakdos. It has more of this freedom of red. Black is added. It ihas freedom to do what it wants without worrying about morality. Jund adds in green . So this freedom becomes primal and preditory. Freedom is discussed in this video. It really clarifies things for me. I already went over the green videos. So I build up on the knowlage from there. I have already watched the videos for Gruul, Golgari and Rakdos. Together they give a good view of what Jund is like. I get so excited watching the videos this way. The next ones for me to watch are Izzit and Jeskai. They are two colors that are so interesting and so relatable for me. I am going to go nuts in the comment section. Green and Black are two opposing colors. Green is the color of life. Black is the color of death. Alternatively green can be like the nurturing food of prey and black can be the ruthless hunger of predator. Red is a color that can bridge the gap. Red is the most free and dynamic color. It keeps the cyles of nature turning. There is the cycle of life and death. There is the cycle of predater and prey in the food chain. It all moves in red. The autenthicity of self through savage expression is most like Gruul. Gruul is the mix of green and red. It is very savage and barbaric. It sticks to primal nature. There is autenthicity. There is black added. This makes Gruul more ruthless. It is more preditory and selfish.The chaos of thought and confidence of action is most like Rackdos. Rakdos is the red and black mix. It is the most chaotic. So its mind goes all over the place. The green is added. This gives wight to actions. It brings confidance. The Harmony through domination is most like Golgari. Golgari has green and black. Without red, Golgari has the most structure of the three pairs. There is some sence of harmony through its mastery of the cycles of life. Red adds a whole new power. One makes use of this mastery aggressivly. So there is dominance. Overall Jund can be a mix of the freedom of Rakdos, the savegry of Gruul and the preditory ruthlesness of Golgari. I did sum that up neatly. I wonder If I can sum up the last shard I watched as neatly. Naya was this last shard. Naya has the accepting harmony of Selesnya, the primal nature of Gruul and the zeal of Boros. I think that sums things reasonably well.

I use Red as a building block (freedom, chaos, etc.) to speed up my goal. and I use Green as my base philosophy for the natural order and using my powers from the other 2 colors to maintain a balance. I still don't use blue or white, as I'm technically "selfish" (black mana) in how I handle social structures (white mana) or how I view the deeper meaning in things (blue mana) instead of not doing either as you implied at 4:20 I use Black mana to cover the thoughtfulness of how my personal natural order will affect whatever it will affect.

I think if you see many interviews of successful people, many of them have a "Jund" aspect to them, regardless of their personality type. (Watch interviews with Kanye especially). Put in one phrase - "they merge with the world/work." Like a pencil feels like an extension of your hand, the world feels like an extension of their being. Rather than just sitting "in awe" of the unity like hippies (W/G), they retain their relentless drive to act on the world (R/G/B). Jund doesn't mean stupid, per se. It just means you only learn what's necessary in your relentless clawing up the food chain. You may in fact learn a ton very quickly as you plow through the work. But it's more likely to be mountains of little details and tricks. Not necessarily theories that look down on things from high.

@coopertolbertsmith60674 жыл бұрын
When wizards did an article on the abzan color philosophy, the structure was set up as an interview between the three colors white,green and black. In it, black makes a comment to green about survival of the fittest, to which green retorts " And all you can see is the predator/prey dynamic. There are just as many examples of animals who live together in harmony. There are even those who interact positively with another". Jund seems to lean into a philosophy that the truest you can be is selfish in nature, but I'd take what green said as proof that's not universally true.
@DiceTry4 жыл бұрын
I agree. I think it's blacks influence that sees the world as a dog eat dog world. While green can agree with that green alone states that we can all live together in peace. black has a tendency to create selfish paranoia in whatever combination it's in
@Powershade1174 жыл бұрын
I think this is a question of nature vs nurture, as well as our flexible place in the food chain. Humans who grow up in the cruel wilds of the world and that see other animals as nothing more than food fall into Jund's territory. However, what about those humans who would live in fear of the predators around them? Humans that accept their place as prey? That to me almost seems more in line with the colors of Naya, but that's a video for another time.

@@coopertolbertsmith6067 "When wizards did an article on the abzan color philosophy, the structure was set up as an interview between the three colors white, green and black." @@Simpson17866 I get what you mean, but I think that was part of the point of the interview structure. There can be a different interpretation of this three-color philosophy; for example, you can shift the focus of the "main" color. For example, when black is in the focus of the mentioned triad, you get something like Korvold (a vicious king turned into a dragon who ate all his guests at the wedding). If green is in the focus Windgrace appears as the leading figure of the triad - an ideal of an noble beast who is deeply connected to the forest. As for red, you get Prossh, Yurlok or maybe even those Goblin twins who are only looking to make some chaos. Also green is not only an "animal" brain speaking in a negative way. XD

I find you me assumptions interesting, but flawed. It may be due to my Green-heavy mentality, Red-Heavy emotions, or Black-Heavy actions, but I see the opposite of what you said about Introspection; the way I see JUND is “Byronic Romanticism”. More specifically, the struggles an individual will suffer, as they search for their place in the world. Not through power OR through Individualism, or EVEN through raw impulses; instead, by choosing your path in life, and the level of willingness to follow through with it, regardless of what society says to do. Another way to see JUND, is by the lack of Blue-White/ “Azorius” philosophy; the philosophy of Order and control. That alone tells you that JUND is chaotic in nature; therefore, opposing what society says to be, in favor for what it chooses to be. Basically, in short? This is the Philosophy of Romanticism, Existentialism, and Determination.

4:00 Small nitpick, but I don't think empathy is inherently White. White cares about the good of the whole group above all else, but that can easily be in more of a militant/pragmatic way than a caring one. If empathy is understanding other people's emotions and life situations, I think Blue is actually the color capable of the deepest empathy, followed by White or Green.
@GacLosen65564 жыл бұрын
I disagree. Blue doesn't care about emotions as much as Red does, and Blue will gladly get rid of whatever it deems inefficient to its pursuit of omniscience. Red, on the other hand, will fight tooth and nail for the people it cares about because Red is the color of unbound emotions. Look at the card Cathartic Reunion from the Ikoria block as an example. The flavor text talks about a man who lost everything but it doesn't matter because he saved his dino friend (which is also an accurate representation of how the card itself works). That's Red's empathy in action. Blue doesn't have or care about empathy in that regard. But yes, White and Green would have the most amount of empathy after Red.
@HessianHunter4 жыл бұрын
@@GacLosen6556 I think you're defining empathy as "caring about other people" while I'm defining it as "understanding how another person feels". I also think you're being a bit extreme in your interpretation of the philosophies. Blue and White probably care the least about emotion, being opposite from Red, but that doesn't mean that Blue and White mages don't feel emotions at all. Even if a Blue mage isn't guided by their emotions and wants to overcome them, they can still understand how another person's emotions would be effected by a given situation, and imo are probably better suited to that task than a White or Red mage.
@GacLosen65564 жыл бұрын
@@HessianHunter I think our main issue here is as you said, there are multiple definitions of empathy. There is affective empathy, which is what I'm describing, and cognitive empathy, which is what you're describing. However, there is a huge difference between them. Blue and white mages may be able to understand why someone feels the way they do, but their philosophies would ultimately say that their individual emotions don't matter in the face of the bigger picture. I don't think I'm being all that extreme when I say this, especially when taken in the context of the game. Blue and white mages have emotions for sure. They have their own emotions and ways of feeling their philosophies. They can look at the emotions of another and understand, but then proceed to shut down those emotions. Blue and white mages see emotions as either a weakness or a detriment to their philosophies, because White mages care more about the whole than the individual, and Blue mages keep their emotions under strict control to maintain its sense of order and logic in pursuit of its ideal. In short, it's "I may understand how and why you feel that way, but I ultimately don't care." That's cognitive empathy in action, and by itself, cognitive empathy is no different than cold logic. Whereas Red mages believe unrestrained emotions and the freedom that comes with them is something beautiful that everyone should be allowed to experience, including itself. Red sees the emotions of others and sees beauty. They might not do much thinking about them, but they don't need to, because what matters is how they feel. If Red mages see someone or something they love hurting, then they will do what they can to put a smile on that person's face or make a situation better. That's affective empathy, which is what people do for each other when guided by their hearts rather than their heads. And before we keep going, please keep in mind that I am a very biased person. I identify strongly with Red's philosophy and can't stand White and Blue's philosophies (especially the latter).

I see Jund as pure natural greed. Though Jund doesn't see its self as evil, rather it is put in the role of predator making it so others see it as a threat to them. Jund doesn't think it made its self into a predator, it just acts like it in its natural state, and it doesn't see any problem with that. A real-world example of something like this is a wild lion, what we might see is a lion violently chasing a zebra while the zebra just wants to live, but the lion sees nothing wrong with it since the lion needs to eat. Being a predator just comes naturally to it, though Jund is a more extreme example where it doesn't kill to just survive, rather just to benefit in any way possible. I think you tried to make this point at 6:44, but I just wanted to re-word in my view it just in case you had a different thought process.

Pack hunting seems the ideal responce. The Jund underdog is weak, but it despise his own weakness (Black). So he band together with other underdogs, as this is the natural way for the weak to survive (Green). Now that they have a decent number of underdogs united, they can act as a single powerful beast doing as it pleases (Red). Inside the pack, they probably have a power based hierarchy, maybe with a non underdog on top, but this allow them to fight for dominance in a more equal footing, while still being capable of punching above their weight against outsiders.

I always felt like we only ever get one side of this coin. Imagine a slave people who see the same view from a different angle. We are weak therefore we surve. What colors would that be?

After listening carefully, I can hear slight white noise in your audio. But this is easy to fix: Record a “silent” audio file (a sound file of what your mike picks up while you’re not talking), the use audio programs (like audacity, it’s free!) to retract that sound from your regular audio. Gives nice, clean, and crisp as fuck audio.

Many version will sound a lot like grill with selfish actions. But that's because red-green and red-black have some overlap in their ideals.

Freedom through oppression, You are free to be who you are until in infringes upon the rules, if you infringe upon the rules you don't deserve to live. Anything questioned must be silenced, for you cant understand anything you don't already understand. for you MBTI people, stereotypically made out for as an ENTP.
