Welcome, young engineers, to our exciting journey back in time to the mighty Roman Empire! In this first episode of our "Mini Weapons" series, we'll explore the fascinating history of the catapult, one of the most powerful weapons of ancient warfare.
The Roman Empire, spanning nearly two million square miles and home to almost ninety million people, left a lasting impact on our world today. We'll dive into the daily life of Roman citizens, uncover the secrets of their success, and meet the important men and women who shaped this incredible civilization.
In this video, you'll:
Learn about the history of catapults in ancient Greece and Rome.
Discover how the Romans improved on Greek designs to create powerful siege engines.
Build your very own simple catapult using pencils, rubber bands, and a plastic spoon.
Materials Needed:
3 pencils
3 rubber bands
1 plastic spoon
1 small eraser or marshmallow (for ammo)
Instructions:
Create the Base: Form a cross with two pencils and secure them with a rubber band.
Build the Launcher: Place a third pencil perpendicular to the cross and secure it with rubber bands to form a triangle.
Attach the Spoon: Tape or rubber band the plastic spoon to the end of the third pencil.
Prepare for Launch: Place your eraser or marshmallow in the spoon, pull back, and let go to launch!
Don't forget to complete the worksheet in the description for a fun and educational activity!
