This movie changed my life, and have stayed my real favourite. I was 14 and quite depressed and suicidal, and my sister not-so-innocently decided to put the movie on while I was at her place. This movie taught me the first steps about how to live, and still today I haven't forgotten Maude's lessons about how to be free, yourself and happy.

It changed my outlook on life too. I was 17 when I first saw this movie back in 1973. It had been out since 1971, and already had a cult following. My mom and I were hooked from the beginning. We would go all over the valley, Hollywood, and West LA to see it at what ever theater was showing it. I still love Sunflowers to this day and have them all over my bedroom walls. I bought all the Cat Stevens CDs so I could have all the music from the movie. Glad it changed your outlook too!!

Oh, this movie is just incredible. I think it's my favorite film of all time now. The concept of this sort of love may not please the masses but do know that "grossing out" people was hardly the point of this movie. The movie was more about the contrast of a young and old soul's view on life. Well, I wouldn't want to spoil it but the lessons you could learn in this movie are truly worth treasuring :)

I remember seeing the trailer for this movie as a kid while at a movie theater back in 1971 and I thought all of these years that it was based on the premise that Harold was miserable and suicidal due to the high demands of Maude for which made him codependent. He just looked so innocent and in pain! This movie trailer never left my mind but Boy, was I so wrong as I saw the movie for the first time just this past weekend!! What I really liked about the movie was that Maude accepted Harold even though he was “different”. This was very key to me. She did not judge him and allowed him to just be who he was. Those who are “different” constantly face rejection and that is why he fell for Maude. Don’t sweet the small stuff - Just be free for how you were designed to be. Don’t let fear interfere nor lessen your sense of well being and confidence is the message I received from this movie.

From time to time I rewatch this movie, it always gets my spirits up. I also recommend it to all the people I discuss movies with, if they did not see it. Never met a person that did not like it. The movie is just beautiful and filled with life lessons. What I take from the movie... Live your life in whatever way it makes you happy, do not tie your happiness to other people and make the best of it. I think Maude through her life tragedies came up to that philosophy and tried to teach Harold it. Because Harold was a clearly a depressed young man, no one around listening to him and lacking his mothers affection. I really liked the way they completed each other, one old adventurer with no one to share and one young man seeking an adventure in their life.

I wish the movie made it more obvious that Maude was a Holocaust survivor. (There is a quick shot in the movie of the character's arm and you can see a death camp tattoo.) That knowledge about that character brings more depth to the movie and helps you understand her.
@adollfordolls10 жыл бұрын
I like that they didn't focus on it or even mention it that much. If she had focused on it in the movie she wouldn't be the same person and it certainly didn't make him think any different of her. I'm glad they didn't make such a big fuss of it because it's what made her who she was and she lived in the present for 80 years, why look back then?

Lamarr168 Have you never heard of subtlety and the art of clever, discrete film making?
@NormanMatchem10 жыл бұрын
I seen no such thing in the movie. During the scene where they're dancing, Maude is wearing an outfit that bears her arms from elbow to hand, and I couldn't see any tattoos that suggested she survived Hitler's death camps. There's also no suggestions towards her being from Europe, or being Jewish. While there's no suggestions to her being into women, it's not impossible to imagine, but I can't any proof that she's a survivor of the Holocaust, nor any way it would tie into the story. She seems infinitely happy, utterly carefree, seeing the world as a playground. Doesn't sound like the kind of attitude someone would take up after experiencing starvation, degradation, mass murder, not to mention potentially torture and humiliation. If you can point out the time in the movie where you can see this death camp tattoo though, I'll be happy to look it up and admit that I'm wrong. To be honest though, if I indeed AM wrong, and there IS a death camp tattoo, I don't think it would help the movie at all.
@adollfordolls10 жыл бұрын
NormanMatchem Towards the end when they're sitting on the rocks looking at the water (I think they were looking at the water) he notices the tattoo and realizes she was at a concentration camp. It's on her inner arm above her wrist.
@NormanMatchem10 жыл бұрын
CoCoCat Just watched the scene, seen no such thing, which would have been doubly obvious if Harold himself noticed it. Another reason why it would make no sense for her to be a Holocaust survivor; she apparently turned 80 in 1971. That means from 1942-1945, she was in her 50s, making her suffrage from malnutrition and hard labour even more difficult. Those who were too old and frail or too young and inept to work hard labour were often the first to go. In all honesty, I think Lamarr168, CoCoCat, and hyena131 are all the same person. Why you'd want to try to lie to people, I don't understand.

I just watched the movie. starting off I didn't like it, and thought to myself "what the hell am I watching" as I found it to be utterly bizarre. however, as the movie progressed I began to get a grasp of it's surreal tone and realised that his suicide attempts are symbolic for the "walking corpse" that his mother shaped him out to be. When he meets Maude, she gives him a reason to live life to the fullest, and not worry about any forms of judgement. what a truly beautiful movie.

Saw Harold and Maude for the first time, in high school, during the seventies. For awhile, once a month, my school had an "activities day". With 3 or 4 activities to chose from. Like go to the zoo, ice skate, etc, or stay at school and see a movie. The first activities day, they offered Harold and Maude. Attendance was so packed, for the next activities day, they put a limit on how many students could attend the movie. So for the next one, I chose ice skating, instead of seeing Rosemary's Baby. All these decades later, I'm still glad about both choices.

I watched this movie in 1987 as part of an English college course where we had to critique films. The teacher was in love with this movie in large part because it was set in the 1970s at time when he had come to Canada as a Vietnam War draft-dodger. If I remember correctly the movie was about a young man who was fascinated by death and he was shown the meaning of life by this (much) older woman.

She was shown to him, more likely.

In reading these comments, I just learned that she was a Holocaust Survivor. Have seen the film twice but never caught that.
