Harold Forster Chapin (December 7, 1942 - July 16, 1981) was an American singer-songwriter, philanthropist, and hunger activist best known for his folk rock and pop rock. He achieved worldwide success in the 1970s. Chapin, a Grammy Award-winning artist and Grammy Hall of Fame inductee, has sold over 16 million records worldwide.
He died on July 16, 1981 in a car accident on the Long Island Expressway. He was only 38 years old.
The car Chapin was driving, a 1975 Volkswagen Rabbit, was hit from behind by a tractor-trailer, according to police reports at the time. The truck was traveling at 55 miles an hour as Chapin shifted lanes. The collision ruptured the gas tank of the VW, causing it to burst into flames.
The Harry Chapin Archives says that "the driver of the truck, 57-year-old Robert Eggleton of South Plainfield, N.J., and another passerby were able to get Harry out of the burning car through the window and by cutting the seatbelts, before the car was completely engulfed."
He was taken by medical helicopter to Nassau County Medical Center where doctors tried for 30 minutes to revive him, but he was pronounced dead at 1:05PM. The cause of death was given to the media as "cardiac arrest," and it is believed that the collision caused an artery to be torn from his heart, although it's possible he had suffered a heart attack while driving.

funny been playing some of Harry's songs today and came across this tribute ISH! very good graphics. I remember hearing about his death here in England, I was in the royal navy in culdrose Navy airfield in Cornwall . very sad, but still listening to his beautiful stories. funny too god bless dear Harry Chapin and thank you legend.xx lots of love and respect from a royal navy veteran in Suffolk England xx

They finally had a settlement from the car company over the position and safety of the fuel tank. I always thought it had be a VW Karmann Ghia.I think it took almost 9 years .

Nope. He never used drugs that anyone knows of. As referenced in the video he suffered an aortic dissection (aorta tearing away from the heart) because of the way his body contorted after the collision. This apparently was a known safety issue but when the family went to sue, VW basically said "come at us, bro" as they had the financial and legal power to bankrupt anyone trying to sue them.
