Excerpt from the Clive Donner 1963 film of Pinter's play. Where Mick (Alan Bates) takes on a tramp; Davies (Donald Pleasance) as a caretaker - after his invalid brother Aston (Robert Shaw) invites him to stay in his room.

Two acting gods at their peak. Bates in particular was the quintessential Pinter actor.

An out and out classic film. I would highly recommend the play if you ever get the chance to see it. Different gravy.
In the early 70s when I saw this on PBS only a few sophisticated Americans like myself even knew where PBS TV was. There were only 3 0r (4) TV channels. Most TVs didn't hate PBS, you needed a special attachment. And TV would go off the Air around Midnight. Sounds Ancient. Just a few years ago. TV began around 1950. A little (6) inch screen. In the 70s I'd watch SESSAME ST & ELECTRIC COMPANY by day. And at night great shows like THEAREAS RAQUOAN & THE CARETAKER.

The Aston monologue would be really useful as I'm playing the character soon and it would be good to see how it's been done by the pros. If anyone can post that to KZbin, wd be v grateful.

Reminds me of Beckett's Godot and Act Without Words 1--people pulling vegetables out of their pockets.

Pinter had his moments as a writer. I particularly like No Man's Land. But he was a wretched excuse for a human being.

If my memory serves me well - In the film,- Mick (Alan Bates) offers and gives Davies(Donald Pleasance) a lift in his "Van" takes him to the end of the street ,turns right drives along the street,(chatting all the while) turns right again, drives along, turns right again-stops the car and says something like "This is where you get out". Of course Davies hasn,t been paying any real notice to this, gets out and finds he is right back where he was. Loved it!!!

Love the outdoor scene..Not in the original stageplay but one of a number of scenes Pinter added to the screenplay...Very interesting.

The chap who Davies attempts to speak to is Pinter himself.
