I first bought one in 1989. Growing up in Boston, it was the mouthpiece of choice amongst all the teachers in the area. During my first lesson with Tom Martin in 1995, he told me that I would need a new mouthpiece. Years of marching band and swabbing my mouthpiece incorrectly ruined the tip. After going through his collection of Johnstons, we decided to get a new 5RV lyre 13 profile 88. Played this mouthpiece for five years until Gigliotti made me switch to his mouthpiece. In 2017, after twelve years of no playing, I picked up my horn again and I gravitated toward this one. I’ve since worn out this mouthpiece but still own it. My biggest regret was Not having Matson reface it. I mistakenly thought that he wouldn’t touch a stock mouthpiece. Only after his passing did I find out that he absolutely would have.

I find the M13 Lyre plays better than my engraved 5RV Lyre, though It's a chosen one between many and the engraved 5RV Lyre was bought randomly.

I took a master class with peter simanaur and he loved his vandorens and I had a bunch of old ones i got from a music store that was going out of business and sold him some as well as an old vandoren mouthpiece display box and boy, was he happy...he was so nice to me and was a very humble guy...this was back in the eighties and I just got back from a master class with Marcellus and as i recall also that same year did one with gigliotti...boy...when it rains it pours....the funny thing is that those three in that year were the only ones I ever did....very strange

Never cared for the "rubber" of the Vandoren mpcs. Part of the issue is the beak slope design. This 'rubber" comes from Hamburg. IMO the best rubber for clarinet tone was from Riffault pre 1970. Their rubber came from the same factory that made the Meerschaum pipe stems, near the Swiss border with France. It's been a long time, so i can't recall the factory's name. But I visited there for the purpose of getting them to switch the rubber in the Woodwind Company mouthpieces--that was around 1993. Jeantet-!!!--that was the factory name. The rubber was very dark sounding, void of the edginess of the Hamburg rubber and Vandoren beak design you find in the upper clarion as you push the dynamic range.

I've faced the current production VD mpcs and it's like scraping an oily substance from your shoe. Leaves a slick on my diamond stone. So soft. The older M15s are so much better. The 5rvs have a straight baffle down to the bore. I think the M series with a concave baffle better approximate the old style mpcs like chedville and older Selmers etc.

I have one.. but someone tryed to fix the lay / a bit - I think in the hands of a very skilled mouthpiece maker it can be great. It is an old one - the old style engravings and better rubber - I don’t play 5RV so I’m willing to sell it
