To cast Winona in a show set in the 80s, and that has that decade as a gimmick, is just genius. I was so happy to see her acting again after a long while away from the limelight. She is one of the cornerstones on the show.

Winona's performance in "Girl, Interrupted" pretty much saved me. I was diagnosed with Borderline Personality Disorder and felt like it was a death sentence. I related to her character extremely well, both her situation (I spent a brief time on a mental ward and in halfway houses), her personality and her relationship with Jolie's character (I had people just like that in my life - narcissistic sociopaths - that I was drawn to). Watching her very believable character make it through to the "other side" of sanity gave me faith that I would make it, too. And I like to believe I did. Unlike most celebrities, when I watch her interviews I feel very connected to Winona - like she's someone that I could easily be good neighbors or BFF's with. She doesn't feel like a "celebrity", which is a good thing. She feels like a casual, down-to-Earth person - someone you can relate to. I imagine her character "Joyce" in "Stranger Things" isn't too much of a reach for her in order to play the role.
@AndrewMadrigal1414
@AndrewMadrigal1414 Жыл бұрын
I was recently diagnosed with it also. How do you manage??
@NorthernKitty
@NorthernKitty Жыл бұрын
@@AndrewMadrigal1414 First thing is to realize that your brain has been conditioned to think this way, that you need to reprogram it. You aren't born with BPD, it's a learned condition, usually through trauma. You never really formed a solid identity on your own and developing one isn't going to happen overnight, nor is learning how to set boundaries between your own identity and others. In the meantime, the emotional distress you go through won't stop. You have to learn coping mechanisms. Mostly, how to just "observe" your emotions like it's an annoying song on a radio you can't turn off. You can't completely ignore them, but you don't have to act on them, they don't mean anything. All those thoughts in your head are distortions, they're not reality and you don't have to go along with them or do things because of them. There is a type of therapy called DBT that is especially helpful at learning techniques that help with that. It takes a lot of practice, but you need to learn you control your mind - it doesn't control you. It takes a great deal of time. Years of work, the length depending a lot on the person. DBT also helps you deal with the slow pace at which things change, helping you to do "less harm" in the meantime as you get better control over your mind. I can't say the emotions ever end. I've been working on this for about 20 years and my emotions are still triggered, the distorted thoughts still spring to life, but I see them for what they are. Just noise. Like a bad headache, it may distract me but I don't have to let it get in my way of doing things. I can just acknowledge that it's there and move on. I am in control of my behavior, I don't have to let it control me. To be proactive instead of reactive. I hope this makes sense and was helpful. You need a good therapist and a good DBT program to help you. A lot of Eastern practices like Zen, Yoga and Meditation were also helpful to me. There is a book called "Letting Go" by David Hawkins that was also very helpful, but that might be heavy reading. Those emotions may seem powerful and overwhelming and like there's nothing you can do to control them, but it's only because you never really learned how to deal with them. Learning things new as a child is easy - unlearning bad conditioning and relearning better ways as an adult takes a great deal of time.

As someone with borderline personality disorder "Girl, interrupted" helped me so much to cope with my mental illness. I've read the book many, many times and I've never felt understood as I did while reading it. There are quotes that had been thoughts I had stuck in my brain since I was a kid and had always felt crazy about them. Whenever I feel really down I watch the movie or read a few chapters and I'll feel better, like living it's kinda worth it if I can always have my safe place. I can't imagine how traumatising that must've been for her and you can really tell by how nervous she's now at red carpet events :( but overall she seems so much happier and more confident now, I love to see it!

I never realized until just now how many of her films I’ve seen and love. Edward Scissorhands, Reality Bites, Little Women … and so many others form the backbone of my childhood viewing experience. But kudos for including Mermaids in this video. Such an underrated gem of a film and one of my all-time faves. Winona seems like a lovely person, and I wish her nothing but joy. 💜

I absolutely love this! I am aware that with the tremendous success of Stranger Things, it is probably a constant that the younger generation is not aware of Winona’s career. The truth is, Winona Rider is a tremendously accomplished actress and is one of the greatest actresses in Hollywood history. She exemplifies this easily playing an actor that plays an actor in the movie Simone, opposite Al Pacino. I love that this little featurette is giving her her flowers because she absolutely deserves them and she has had a phenomenal career and is still giving us her very best work today, as Joyce Byers. Love you Winona Ryder!

I always loved her ... I am not sure if it was because I was anxious as a person and growing up she was representing anxious characters ... I can relate to .. I also love how soft she is .. soft but not weak :) .. Hearing her answers, she is so relatable .. and I am admiring her ability to keep a shirt for 10s of years then wear it again .. just like that .. I love how real she is .. and how down to earth and humble .. I am glad she is appreciated after all these times .. I always thought she is not getting enough spotlight and she deserves it.

She played Ethan Hawke's love interest in Reality Bites in 1994. Now, she's in Stranger Things with Maya Hawke, Ethan Hawke's daughter. She needs to do a movie or show with Uma Thurman to complete the Hawke family circle. Also, I'd love to see a Kill Bill 3, with Maya Hawke playing Beatrix Kiddo's daughter, fighting against Copperhead's (Vivica A.Fox's character) daughter, and a son of Bill's that Beatrix didn't know existed, because he was born from another woman while Beatrix was in a coma. He could be named after his father, which would give it a legit reason to still call it Kill Bill, as the original Bill has already been killed. Sorry. Rambling.

Anyone (American) born in the 70s 80s or up to the mid-90s knows exactly who she was even before Stranger Things. Especially in the late '80s to early 90s Winona Ryder was Hollywood royalty at its best. But to me she's always been a Star.
