Let it be said that not all comedians suffer from mental illness, but statistically most do. That should suffice. The probability of his mental illness, I will not guess as I am not an expert in that field (my wife has that degree.) However I am aware that some diagnoses are controversial, which lends credence to much debate. He may have been off his rocker, or just didn't care. *I could argue this point ad infinitum, in lack of proper psychoanalysis.* Even if someone saying "yes" is an expert, did you have him sit down for a few sessions for proper questions? Psychoanalysis requires understanding of the mind, and simply watching you don't get that. Hence the questioning. Not that I give too much credence to Freud, but he was the father of modern psychology. I give less credit to outside observers than to Freud. Sigmund Freud: 1 People judging: 0 My wife's diagnosis for me: not crazy, just sometimes an A-hole (we can live with that.)

Here's another story that Harpo mentions in his autobiography "Harpo Speaks!": once, while staying with fellow Algonquin Round Table friends on an island in Lake Bomoseen in the summer, Alex Woollcott was complaining about people from the mainland sneaking onto the island to get a glimpse of the celebrities. Harpo listened, then kept an eye out for trespassers. Sure enough, when the next boatload showed up, he was ready for them. He leapt out of the bushes and onto the beach, stark naked, waving an axe, and rushing their boat. The trespassing diminished appreciably after that!

I used to have a Swedish friend that was famous for randomly going naked. He found it tremendously amusing,... and it sort of was. For me being brought up in puritanical America, it was a healthy slap in the face on the glories of being uninhibited & comfortable in one’s skin. I remember watching Groucho Marx being questioned as a guest on the old Tonight Show with Johnny Carson where he would matter-of-factly say the very same thing, that they would be waiting to speak to some Hollywood Mogul and strip naked. I found it very amusing--- I knew of Groucho's reputation and it seemed completely natural. I have tried finding those interviews on KZbin, but I think they were wiped. (This is when Johnny was in NYC).

It is indeed true that the naked visit to the ladies bridal party , started the tradition. It was mostly through Harpo though. Groucho wasn't a man without something to share, but it is Harpo who began the trend, as the ladies spoke of for years. Mr. Rogers, has no iron in the fire; Groucho had a dog in the hunt. However, Mr. Rogers, who reportedly went streaking' quite often, went virtually unnoticed.

Mr. Rodgers lived on the other side of my neighborhood , here in Pittsburgh Pa. Strangely enough most of the pools at the YMCA and at the Carnegie Library's . Most of the old Carnegie Libraries had pools in the basement . I swim at the Carnegie library Homestead . Some of the older men tell me that they used to swim naked in all the pools and they find it odd to wear a swimming suit. I don't know when the nude swimming fell out of favor but it was not that long ago.

Actually.. You can still screw up PH balance and the like due to the "detergents" in swim suits, and its almost universally a rule, due to this, even today, with "modern pools" that the pool is the only place that one "must be nude" in "clothing optional" locations.

It would be interesting to see a program on changing attitudes toward nudity, including reality vs pundits. My father (and his brothers and one sister) attended Cornell at time when one prominent professor had a theory on posture predicting academic success and convinced the administration to require all incoming freshmen to be photographed in the nude. He would then evaluate their posture, make predictions, and then wait til they graduated to check his accuracy. (Dad and siblings, by the way, were children of a local pastor, though I think he had died before this started.) I learned this after Dad died when the massive trove of pictures was discovered and destroyed. He never said a word about it. It apparently went on until the professor retired with no massive protests. Likewise, a local columnist once wrote about regularly skinny dipping in the major local waterway with a hundred yards of a railway bridge in view of passenger trains in the 30s. These are the years the Sexual Revolutionaries of the 60s thought were so repressed.
