Harpo was a magical kind of person. He loved life and his family. The world lost a wonderful human being the day Harpo died. Harpo is my favorite of the Marx brothers. I love them all, but Harpo was amazing

Harpo was never accepted by trained harpists because he was self taught. His mother sent him his first harp because she knew he could play it. They sniggered at his technique and called him amateurish. He took harp lessons as an older man to improve his playing and never gave it up.

There was a pizza place called Fireside Inn in Metairie, La., Metro NOLA Area. They used to play lots of movies - plenty of Marx Bros & silents too. But I loved Marx Bros movies - Harpo & Chico! Great & no lessons! Wow!

From what I was led to believe, is that Harpo did not use 'proper' technique, and so 'professional' teachers could no longer teach him... They instead, would often observe and marvel at his unique technique...

@friedman1962 I cannot find any documentation of Harpo having been able to play cello or violin. However, as the whole world knows, he played harp and was self-taught on that instrument, according to his son, Bill. Harpo was also able to play piano, clarinet and harmonica to some degree (also self-taught), but his principal instrument and his great love was the harp. I hope that this helps.

It's wonderful how they jazz up classical pieces. The Gershwin brothers wrote a tune, ( O CAN'T BELIEVE I can't remember the name) it is so famous! Anyway, it is stolen from Chopin. I know, because as a classical pianist, the first time I played that Gerwshwin tune, I stopped, in awe and said,"This is Chopin!". Almost identical. One of the fav things to do, is take a piece from Bach and just put different rhythm to it. As shown here, it is really cool!OH! 'Rhapsody In Blue' !
