When Harpo Marx plays, the world ceases to exist. There is only Harpo Marx and his music. He was a genius!

I loved this, too, when I first heard it, as a child. Now, as an adult, the power of the scene is not just Harpo's playing, although it's arguably the best he does in any of the movies (and one performance that doesn't have or need any orchestra accompaniment); it's also in the ancient dignity and sadness of the music, set amid the looted treasures of Europe, in a movie released in 1946. That's so very powerful. Indeed: Hooray for Harpo!

Love that man. He played the harp in nearly all his movies.which as definitely the best thing about them! Wonderful childhood memories. I know there's an angel in heaven playing the harp. Now my wife asks me why I want to play the harp!

All three of them were geniuses. And I heard somebody who knew Harpo say, on the radio, that in private life he was a particularly nice man.
@5610winston5 жыл бұрын
Indeed, he was. I recommend his autobiography, HARPO SPEAKS, as an insight into this quiet genius's life, as well as an essential historical document describing the last decade of the nineteenth and the first half of the twentieth century.

I just stumbled over Harpo Marx and like his subtlety and how he joins medleys from different pieces but sure he's just following the way the pieces are linked together in himself by way of association. Very gifted indeed (as Harpo and Groucho) !

It goes without saying his musical talent is unequaled. What is equally stunning is the profound look of concentration and contentment on his face while performing. I have neither. I'm not unhappy, I just can't concentrate at that level, nor have I reached that state of satisfaction. My loss. Thankfully I can enjoy someone who has achieved such.

According to stories, Harpo, who was a self-taught harp player, years later hired a professional harp instructor to teach him how to properly play the harp but instead of teaching him, the harp instructor ended up just watching him play lol.

There is an old movie from this era where a woman who is an angel comes to help some man. She doesnt reveal she is is an angel at first and just tries to help him, anyway there is a scene in it where she plays the harp for him and it sounded amazing. If anyone has any idea what the film might be please let me know I have been looking for it a long time. Thanks

It was a staple in classic cartoons. The best-known ones are the Oscar-winning "The Cat Concerto" (Tom and Jerry), "Rhapsody Rabbit" (Bugs Bunny), "Convict Concerto" (Woody Woodpecker) and "Rhapsody in Rivets". Here's a lesser-known one: kzbin.info/www/bejne/hJeafqN6iclonsk One of the uncredited writers of A Night in Casablanca was Frank Tashlin, who was directing Looney Tunes and Merrie Melodies before he started writing and directing live action feature films, which he liked to put "cartoony" stuff into. I wonder if he had anything to do with Harpo playing the Hungarian Rhapsody #2?

Harpo was self taught, harp was horribly out of tune, he played only on the upper 2/3rds of the strings, the longest strings were replaced with rubber bands for gags. Harpo had to travel with two harps, in case some outsider tried to help him by having the harp tuned properly, because then he couldn't play. All Harpo fans should read his memoirs, "Harpo Speaks" one of the funniest books you will ever read. Honk Honk !
