As a harpist I can tell you that what he does at the end there is the harp equivalent of a Van Halen solo. Actually Harpo's like the Eddie Van Halen, Jimi Hendrix and John Frusciante of harp combined. My hero :)

Harpo has an auto biography called "Harpo Speaks". It is hands down my favorite book i have ever read. when i finished reading it the first time i felt like i had made the best friend ever, and flipped the book over and read it again.

I had that exact feeling when I read it. He writes it in a way that when you have read it, it feels like you know (or knew) him personally. Its my #1 fav book. He would have been a wonderful man to meet.

@@similer5987 He had a fine ghost working with him, of course. I have my copy somewhere, but which of his friends was it who summed him up as "...the only normal man in Hollywood..."? The friend continues to point out (among other traits) that Harpo loved his family first, and that they adored him, that he loved his work, he had had never spent a minute on a psychiatrist's couch, never taken a sleeping pill, was a great listener, and that he didn't have an enemy in the world..... And another party present proceeded to tell an embarrassing story about how Harpo had gotten poison ivy in a rather delicate spot as the result of a spontaneous joke involving running a garden hose up his pants leg. The world needs more men like that.

hi all, wanted to say, i teach american history at the high school level and i decided to add something new the history of comedy thought it would be a nice touch so i showed movies from 20s-50s everything i could think of to many to list here but i showed a few 20 minute clips of the marx brother movies with harpo playing. well after school some students came to me and said they were more entertained seeing that type of comedy than with todays comedy. that made my day take care all, thank you

An under appreciated part of this clip is Thelma Todd's appearance in the balcony window. "Horse Feathers" was the second of her two Marx Brothers' film (following "Monkey Business" the year before). Her death three years later under mysterious circumstances remains one of Hollywood's great real-life tragedies.

Favorite films since childhood are Marx Bros. films; within them I enjoy musical bits by Harpo and Chico the most. Rickenbacker (elec. guitars) made a harp for Harpo with a pickup for each individual string. His muscled forearms likely came from playing this instrument for decades. Great, sensitive art.

Harpo is one the most gifted and genuine talents this world has had the good fortune of experiencing. He was a self taught musician. His tuning was "incorrect," and he held the harp "incorrectly" too. In his later life he hired various professionals to teach him, but none of them wanted to touch what he did. The last one apparently ended up asking him for lessons in his tuning and playing style.
