The Makin Island is new and uses a synthetic surface material for the deck. The surface is incredibly rough and tough but you can see by the burn marks in the video that the Harriers do damage the deck.

Yes this is the AV-8B Harrier II, but the AV-8B is simply a British Aerospace Harrier made under license by Boeing / McDonnell Douglas. The Harrier was originally designed & built by Hawker Siddely (British Aerospace). The AV-8B is called the GR-9 Harrier in the UK and was built by BAE, but it is essentially the same aircraft. The Rolls Royce engines are also designed & built in the UK.

Kenny it was routine to use a runway for short take off as the jet could only do VT when not fully laden with weapons and fuel. VT was practiced routinely from carriers but not for combat or air patrol. The ability was useful if the deck was damaged or blocked. What is interesting is that this take off here is not conventional as it is achieved with out a catapult. The short take off is possible as the pilot flips the thrust nozzles to the vertical at the last moment to “push” the plane up. On RN carriers they could take off with an even shorter run up using a ski jump to help them off the deck when weighed down with missiles, bombs & fuel.
