I have had the great pleasure of serving in VMA-513 and witness probably *the funniest crash in Marine Corp aviation history* . AV8A Low on fuel and circling because the crosswind component was far to high to do a conventional landing. The pilot is telling tower and ground that he did not have the fuel to circle much longer and was going to do a cross field approach and vertical landing. Now remember, the reason for this was the fuel was dangerously low but it takes more fuel to land vertically than conventionally. Anyway, pilot comes in across the field low and transitions the nozzles and gets decelerated to almost 0/0 when the fuel runs out. The bird is about 25 feet in the air, and just drops out of the sky and slams into the ground collapsing the gear but the gun pods (as was the case for wheels up landings in the AV8A) did not get shoved up into the fuselage. But this is not the funny part. The crash truck approached at high speed from behind the AC on the ground (into the wind) and started blowing foam despite the fact that the reason for the crash was no fuel. The foam though was going into a headwind and blew back and obstructed the driver's vision, and the AV8A is a small aircraft and looks even smaller when it is on the ground wheels up, so the driver misjudged his distance and hit the bird with considerable speed and totaled the airframe. The pilot had managed to get free of the AC before the crash truck hit it, so no one was injured. For the spectators though (and I monitored the tower comms so we were all out on the apron watching because it was a friend out there in trouble) it was pretty funny. I mean it wasn't our money. We almost always laughed at crazy Harrier stuff. (Later, we did lose an AV8A in a training run. Pilot flew into the water. Target Fixation was ruled to be the probable cause. They recovered scraps for weeks to try to do forensics on it. Covered half of a hanger floor. Pilot was essentially ground up to nothing because in an AV8A, you are sitting a couple of feet in front of the biggest food processor blade ever put into a fighter jet. That is not meant to be funny, it is meant to say that flying in an attack aircraft is dangerous stuff.

Harriers do conventional takeoffs when loaded as they don't have the power to take off vertically that way. Max takeoff weight for VTOL is below 21,000lbs. Bearing in mind that the aircraft empty is almost 14,000lbs.
@@oldfucker68 what isn't true? Harrier loaded even with fuel tanks will struggle to vertically takeoff
@Knightfang14 жыл бұрын
Aaa 8437w7dkdisi3jed correct, harriers will actually often take off from the boat with empty wing tanks and then hook up with a tanker because you can’t do VTOL above about 22,000 lbs maximum. That’s the maximum thrust of the engines

@KRW6287 жыл бұрын
the takeoff appears to be the technique they use on a ship; horizontal thrust to get moving; a short takeoff run, partial vertical thrust to get into the air. The landing looks like it was also a "hybrid"; horizontal velocity combined with some significant vertical thrust. The approach doesn't look like it was flown at speeds necessary for entirely wing-borne flight. Interesting.

barracuda7018 The Harrier, like many older US combat planes, has been upgraded throughout it's lifespan. British Harriers went through the same upgrades and aren't the same ones as the originals. The Harriers from the 70's are not like the ones from the 90's and those aren't the same ones as the newest versions. Many planes, military and civillian, are not simply "improved" once and stay that way. The B-52, a very old plane, is a great example and has had numerous upgrades since it's entry into service. So you really can't say one is better than the other without knowing the facts. Also, the Harriers in British service filled different roles than the American ones. The British Harriers were used in the Falklands primarily as interceptors with a secondary role as ground attack. The USMC Harriers were, and are primarily used in the ground attack role with air-to-air weaponry for self-defensive purposes only. So they both have equipment and upgrades that fit their different roles. They are not like similar cars at a swap meet where one is "better" than another.
