Harriman State Park, Fly Fishing Opening Day with my daughter, Megan

Told to evacuate from Yellowstone National Park we needed to come up with new plans for our father and daughter fly fishing and filming vacation. Heading to Harriman State Park in Idaho for opening day on the blue ribbon stretch of Henry’s Fork of the Snake River that runs through the once private ranch of the Harriman family of Pacific Railroad fame was our top choice. Especially considering that Megan actually wanted to attend the night before gathering and partying of fly fishermen and women from across North America she had heard about, which I am guilty of mentioning, and always up for a party, Megan remembered. Only to find ourselves leaving a tropical warm front up north to one of the coldest June 15th openings of the Railroad Ranch.
And yet, while the cold weather and shallow water made fishing difficult, the beauty of an Idaho Spring more than made up for our having been evacuated from Yellowstone.

You're welcome - I ended up staying at the Ranch for several nights with fellow bamboo rod admirers after dropping my daughter off at the airport. I need to edit and post the videos I took of the Ranch and where I did finally land a rainbow. But it was pretty cold this past June and other than a nice caddis hatch there wasn’t much else going on….

I was there that day too. Rough go, but luckily not skunked. Do you plan on coming to Yellowstone this year?

Yep we were skunked that day, but also surprised at how low the water or flows were. My guess is Idaho was holding back water at the Island Park Dam as water coming out of the Yellowstone area due to abnormal flooding, and the huge drawdown of Jackson Lake Idaho did prior to the Yellowstone flooding. So after Opening day we headed to the Warm River since it isn’t subject to dams controlling its flows and hit the jackpot with native and stocked fish (I posted the video). After dropping Megan off at the airport I returned to Harriman State Park for a few days and explored other parts of the river and finally did land one rainbow…….I still need to edit and publish the journey. No, after two years of dealing with weather extremes in Yellowstone - incredible heat in 2021 and incredible flooding in 2022, I need to question fishing this area in June…….We’re thinking about heading to the Lake Placid area in upstate New York, where I landed three of the largest brown trout 21 to 24 inches a few years ago and seeing if I can repeat this on film…..I do like fishing the Madison below the dam, but not sure how well it’s recovered since the damage the dam did accidently shutting down in the winter 2021/2022.
