Harrison Birtwistle builds a bridge between the tonal language od benjamin Briyyen and the quite contrasting and higly complex music of Bryan Ferneyhough, one of the most complex ever written. Harrison Birtwistle hs been deeply influenced by the theatre and writes a music which is ogten very crude, made of dissonant blocks clashing one another. Like his compatriots Britten and Ferneyhough, he has an undisputed originality of his own. . Thses three compserd pushed the English music in full light furing the secoind art of the XX° century.

Birtwistle uses brass quite extensively in this piece. it almost sounds like a brass band in some parts.

Schade, dass Simon Rattle mit den Berliner Philharmonikern nicht mehr Birtwistle dirigiert hat
