I think what happened was the Perth express was late and it’s crew made the unnecessary decision to speed the train up to make up the lost time they lost. After that, the Perth express speeds up close to 100 mph and it’s crew didn’t notice the yellow and the two stop signals because the Euston local was still in the station. At 8:19 am, the crash happened. That’s my theory on how the Perth express crashed into the local and the Manchester express crashed into the Perth express.

According to the official report, the Perth train was doing about 60 mph. The driver overran two danger signals, for reasons unknown. Seeing that the train was over an hour late, running any faster would not have made any real difference, as it was only twelve miles from its terminus. In 1952, Britain's railways were still recovering from the war, and there was nowhere on the system passed for 100 mph running at the time, and certainly not at the approach to a London terminus in peak hours. The actual death roll was 112, excluding the ten who died later. The official report gave 64 on the local, 23 on the Perth train, 7 and a train attendent on the Liverpool train, 14 passengers on the platform, the driver and fireman of the Perth train, and one of the drivers of the Liverpool train. Incidentally, 42389 was hardly damaged. The engineering staff at Crewe wanted to repair 46202, as it had only been rebuilt from a Turbomotive six weeks previously. In the end, the powers that be decreed otherwise, and 46202 was finally withdrawn in May 1954.

This is a good way of depicting a crash and the animation is good, but it has a couple of things fundamentally wrong which is a shame. When City of Glasgow ploughs into the back of the local, it carries on going forward until it ends up on its side almost as far as the passenger footbridge in the station. It is completely buried under wreckage. Then when the double headed Liverpool train crashes into the pile of wreckage, Windward Islands (leading) and Princess Ann (behind) hit City of Glasgow and are defelected to their left, across the platform and onto the electric lines used by the underground trains. This shows them going to their right!
