Dear Disney fans and all lovely and good people,as Disney's employee on Castaway I think that you deserve to know couple of things regarding Island. Just recently went home for vacation but from reasons which will be explained in text I can not same my name, but let just say that I am currently was employed on Castaway Cay as international worker. Yes, very same island that many of you love and gladly going there to experience nice beaches and Disney level of excellence that we are so proud on. Yes, very same that island. As you all in states already knows, Disney is proud on their inclusion policy, fair treatment of all employees, promoting meritocracy and fighting against racism, nepotism and similar backwards things. Well, regarding Castaway Cay, you should know several things that make you think again about Castaway. As island international employee I need to bring couple of things to your attention regarding mistreatment of international employees under Disney/Bahamian rule.I arrived long time ago on Castaway and started my carrier as lifeguard and at that time most of island crew where internationals from all over the world, also we had local Bahamians as well. Everything was working fantastic, our crew was hired according by Disney very strict and demanding rules, which allowed company to provide best level of service for American/Disney’s guests and provide superb experience. Recruitment process was very strict(for lifeguards), requirements where that everyone who applied for this position supposed to be superb swimmer, with previous work experience in similar area, police/criminal background check and etcetera. Upon arrival on island we used to had drug test, swim test and if you fail you are going back home. This process, along with Disney strict work policies, where enabling Disney’s guests superb experience and safety on island, because we had team of proven lifeguards ready to act at any moment. However, in past 2-3 years things started to change from bad to worse, dropping down in recruitment requirements, general negligence, and promoting Bahamians only work policies especially. All this things and especially Bahamians only work policy above anything else leaded to deteoriation and dropping down in quality of the workers, safety of the island crew and pushing on side Disney inclusion and everyone are equal policies. As Disney employee, it’s my duty to inform everyone about grave injustice and mistreatment of international island crew that is going right now on Castaway Cay, and Disney’s indifference toward that. For past 2-3 years, DCL is under pressure of Bahamian government to apply Bahamians only policy despite the fact that their law allows 20:80 ratio in Bahamian favor, and that rule started to create lots of problem and mistreatment, racism and bad treatment of international workers including American one on Castaway Cay. Also, created generally unsafe environment for Guests. As interactional worker who embraced inclusion, Disney way of running business, who until now was winning, I feel obligated to turn attention of world on what is going for past 2 years on Disney private Island. So, here we go: Bahamians only work policy means that all international will be replaced Bahamian regardless their skills or level of competency, that means that does not matter if Bahamian is completely lacks essential skill for some position, he/she is not fit and etc, he/she be brought on position despite total incompetence. As lifeguard, I will first speak about impact on our department and safety of the Guests and that about general situation on island. For past several months for new lifeguard’s crew there is almost no any requirement for job except being Bahamian. New hires all all Bahamians, 90 percent of them does not know to swim properly or at all, and lacking any skill for position. Swim test is canceled, so right now people who are in charged for guests rescue/assistance are completely incompetent and bad swimmers who can even past swim test or even swim properly. Company is pressed by Bahamian government and new Bahamian island director Earle Bettel, who’s is racist toward anyone who is not Bahamian, to hire more and more Bahamians regarding the fact that they are incompetent and lack any qualifications for job. Mr.Earle repeated several times publicly that his goal is to replace all internationals with Bahamians, and we all going to be here just until he finds someone from Bahamas to replace us. Our lifeguards managers are also Bahamians, and we been told that any key position on island from now one can be held Bahamians only. International workers are been said in face every week that will be replaced very soon, and Bahamians enjoy doing that. Very inclusive and totally we are all equal Disney policies, right? As professional, I am deeply worried about safety of our Guests on island cause most incompetent peoples are hired for the job. Another thing is general safety of crew and guests. As I told you earlier in text, police background check was mandatory, but now that is cancelled to, but only for Bahamians. While internationals every time when renewing work permit need to submit police background check, is not anymore needed for Bahamians. As result of that I discovered that we have more and more new hires on island have criminal record, and spent couple of years/months in prison. We have burglars, thieves, (perhaps even murderers) and similar scum now on island. Just imagine that people with criminal record are in charge for guest safety, and we have to live with them on castaway. But company is unfortunately forced to tolerate this cause of Bahamian government and Mr.Earle Bettel. Drug test for new hires and random drug test are still mandatory, but: due to the fact that drugs and marijuana are very common among Bahamians they cancelled urine and switch to saliva drug testing cause if you rinse mouth with vinegar prior testing, will come out negative. They don’t one to lose their Bahamians employees and helping them in every way possible to deceive drug testing. Matter of fact, if you walk on Castaway during nighttime, you can sometimes smell marijuana in certain parts of island. In other departments situation is pretty much the same: Bahamians only new hires, incompetent, with dubious criminal records and similar. Encouraged by island director, everyone are bringing their friends, relatives, cousins to work here, despite the fact their only qualification for job is being Bahamian. Unfortunately, DCL is forced to accept this behavior and play by Bahamian rules, and from some reason does not try to fight back. At this moment Castaway is running on incompetence, nepotism and racism like policies toward anyone who is not Bahamian. As Disney employee, I am using this opportunity to reach you in hope that somehow by making this public, Disney will be forced to act and stop this shameful behavior toward their international employees on Castaway and fight back Bahamian government and Mr.Earle Bettel. At this moment on island, Disney inclusion policy is failing big time and something needs to be done.

I was very hesitant to go on a Disney Cruise cause of the price but by far they have the best service and the shows are 10x better than others. Almost like Broadway quality. Way less drunk people too. Kids are there but they're not enough to annoy me. The adults only area is a great touch too.

WOW... i was to this Island 5 times with the last time being 2002. what a change. You had the food, the Beach for all, some pamper places along with some sales huts and, the Adult beach with the tram. So much has changed. In the very early 90's before cell phones with cameras, you would NOT want to take a pic with a normal camera on the adult side... How times have changed.

I believe it's more of an attempt to provide a more inclusive product, while allowing for add-ons all while providing a consistent experience front to back. If that is even a factor at all, it was incredibly minimal.

My mom and I are doing a "double dip" cruise in September. I wasn't sure why everyone was calling it a double dip instead of a "Nassau" cruise. But Now I think I might have a clearer picture of why... This island seems a lot more "Disney" standard than what I have heard of the 7 hour visit to Nassau.

Although the name is Castaway Cay, it’s actually pronounced castaway KEY. Just a heads up.
@HarrTravel4 жыл бұрын
Disney does use the "Key" pronunciation most historically. Cay coming from Cayo, can be pronounced both ways Castaway "Key" and Coco "Cay".

@HarrTravel5 жыл бұрын
Hey Shelley, it's true that a large percentage have adopted the "key" pronunciation. However, coming from the original name of Cayo the "cay" pronunciation is still very much alive. And as a matter of fact both Disney and Royal Caribbean still use the "cay" pronunciation in their video and audio advertisements. There is a point in the video where Danny actually reverts to the "key" pronunciation because it's hard for us to use "cay" as well. 😂
@Carkebe4 жыл бұрын
I work with hundreds of other travel agents; key or cay are both acceptable, though I hear cay more than key. Like Harr Travel mentioned, the origin of the word comes from Spanish. It's why we pronounce places like Cayo Coco 'Kai-o KoKo' instead of 'Key-o KoKo'.
