That's so cool! I remember his name from our copy of Belafonte at Carnegie Hall! I loved that album! My dad fixed up a speaker outside from our indoor record player, and we played that album over and over again in the summer nights and danced to the music. I pored over that album cover so that's how I remember your uncle's name. RIP Mr. Belafonte. Now cracks a noble heart.

My dad passed away on 11th March 2023 after fighting multi organ disease for over 2 years. This was his favourite song. He was loving, kind and caring. He was very protective of our family and especially me and my brother. He added so much life and colour to our lives that it feels like an empty void without him. For the last 2 years, I saw his condition get worse and worse, with doctors saying that it was a terminal case. Slowly he lost his mental faculties, remembering little about himself or us. In one way, I’m happy that his suffering has come to an end, for no god loving man should be put through that ordeal. I hope god has taken his test and my dad has come out with flying colours, since he didn’t lose his faith and love for God till the very end. His last 3 hours were spent in the way he loved it most - Thanking God, thinking about his children, and laying in my mothers arms. “God is Great” was his favourite thing to say. You’re a lion dad, and your roar will forever reverberate in my heart. I’ll carry you everywhere I go, and your legacy shall never be forgotten. I’ll love you forever and always, Your loving son.

Throughout my early childhood, my grandfather would always sing this song whenever he was driving my sister and I to spend a few days at his house. Keep in mind, this was during the early 2000s to mid 2010s, 50-60 years after this song first debuted. I think it was the first song that I ever got emotional about. He used to tell me that when I was really little, I’d cry when he said “I had to leave a little girl in Kingston Town”. Now that he has passed, this song is one of the ways of how I remember him the best.

My dad used to sing my sisters and me to sleep with this song - among others. Imagine a crooner's voice on a classical guitar singing this song as the tropical rains pour outside. As the rain fades, you can hear the gentle rhythms of the ocean waves on the shore near our island home. I'm actually crying because it makes me miss him. He died at just 53 in 2005 in a car accident. My then 6-year-old nephew and I were passengers. There were over a thousand people total at two funerals held for him; one at the refinery where he worked and one in Guam where many of our family and friends still lived. The refinery even shut down his unit so his coworkers could attend, at a cost to the refinery of more than six million dollars. I've passed it on by singing my nieces and nephews to sleep with this song - among others. Thank you, Harry, for the memories.

Perhaps one of the most beautiful songs I’ve ever heard. Learned to sing harmony to this song and sing along with it whenever my music system plays it.

Farwell and God bless Mister Belafonte. Farwell and God bless.

I sing this song at a memory care home every week. It really lights people up who you’d think were completely shut in inside their Alzheimer’s space. There is a resident elderly man who always joins us who can really sing and loves to lay this one down.

What a wonderful performer, actor, and activist Harry Belafonte was! He was a man of great integrity. My comment about the song "Jamaica Farewell," in particular: I was born in 1956. My mother used to sing this song to me when I was a little girl. She looked over at me one time while she was singing it and noticed that I was crying. She wondered why and comforted me. I was taking the lyrics, "I had to leave a little girl in Kingston Town" very personally! I thought he/my Mom were singing about me! I grew up listening to all of Harry Belafonte's songs on the record player. His voice and songs bring back good memories!
