My dad was a Greek immigrant who happened to be working as a cook at the hotel Harry was staying in when touring here in Australia in the 60s, and who also happened to be a big fan of Harry's. He asked one of the bellboys who was about to deliver the food my dad prepared for Harry, if he'd pass on the message that his cook was big fan of his, not expecting much to come of it. Not long after, the bellboy returns and says that Harry wanted to thank my dad for his kind words. He then hands my dad a picture and a tour book both personally signed by Harry. He then tops it off up saying that Harry would like him to have these 2 tickets for his show as a thank you. My dad passed away many years ago but I always remember the smile on his face when sharing this particular story with me, showing me the tour book and photos, and it made me fond of Harry since, and made me appreciate what a genuinely good hearted person he must have been.

My friend and I went to see Harry in concert at the SF Opera House in 1956. Our tickets were for the very last row of the top of the house. We were 15. We took our dads' heavy old binoculars and I could see the weaving in the rug on the stage floor. I could see the rivulets of sweat running down his face. I hear this particular song way differently than I did back then. Now I hear it as a song of sovereignty, sung by a strong Jamaican. The words are quite beautiful. I learned them then, but had no idea what the song was really about. I thank this great man for all he has done to stand for justice wherever he is.

My Mother adored Harry Belafonte. I took her to see him live at the Royal Festival Hall in London. Its a wonderful theatre and we were slightly to the side but with noone in front of us. She, and I, loved the concert. He did not disappointment, nor is musicians and backing singers.Wonderful evening.

A sweeter soul, a more talented soul, has yet to be seen...thanks, Harry!
During the 50’s my teen sister had a huge crush on him for his talent, looks and strength. I was around 11 and loved his songs. My mom took us to see him at the Los Angeles Greek Theater. I was mesmerized the whole evening…I was not alone in the department! He was a joy to hear and see and that memory has stay with me for 65+ years. As I grew to adulthood other music captured my attention but I grew to admire and be inspired by his integrity, his fight for human rights and the joy he brought to others. A long life well lived.
