Most of the activism in those days was for the benefit of black men to work, travel, and marry who they pleased. So I'm not surprised at his disinterest in black women, but still being a "pro black" activist. But if you're not pro black woman too, you're not pro black.

I wish she would have brought this up in this video. It's strange that she put that info in her Eartha Kitt video but it was nowhere to be found here. Having a video with the title "why people was not here for his affairs with white women" is super surface-level unless you get to the actual deep-seated issues of misogynoir (which tended to be very common then). Otherwise, it's just reinforcing this vapid belief that people are "just haters"..nah, it's oftentimes much more complex than that within the black community (unfortunately). (and...no I don't think she should have made an in-depth video essay on his misogynoir but simply mentioning his comment would have provided a more balanced view of what the perception was from the public and what his actual viewpoints were on the topic...instead of being like "yea he ignored the haters and was a free thinker"...nah that wasn't it.)

Not gonna lie, I respect Harry’s activism and used to revere him when I was younger, but I as I got a little older I kinda felt colorist/elitist vibes. When Eartha Kitt spoke about that despicable statement he made regarding how BW can’t do shit for his career, that was the nail on the coffin for me. God bless homie, but we see where his true interest lies.

That's exactly how much he was bullied by the men that hired him . They still do this to footballers and actors today . Throw bananas in the pitch and jeer it suddenly goes quiet when they cave in and tribute, be seen on the red carpet , marrying the boss man's dawtas .All the money and fame he was given goes right back to her .I'm sure his own BLK wife and daughter could tell a more realistic story. If he said those comments today he would be dragged to filth. Good commentary but it wouldve been a video of more substance to include that because it's vital to know that in comparison to his preferences with his wives. It completes the picture.

I wonder if Belafonte had the same mindset like Sidney Poitier when he had said that a black woman couldn't do anything for him career-wise...Or any other way too?" 🤔 Either way, it's very disappointing and makes his activism look like nothing more than performative..At least to me. To me, it's unacceptable that black people in the entertainment industry were not making the most handsome/beautiful lists... because I have always felt black men and women are the most handsome/beautiful people in the world. I mean, look at African and Caribbean women... absolutely stunning. 💐👑💐
@Sunflowers_220
@Sunflowers_220 Жыл бұрын
You really mean that!? Thats so sweet.❤❤❤ I am kind of taken by this comment because people often praise certain beautiful black people almost as if they are the exeption to the rule. And people often times name other racial groups as a whole the most beautiful. Fair skinned Latin/Hispanic people often get that label. (And they are super beautiful so I have nothing against that, I am more so stating that when people have to name the most beautiful 'exotic' group of people its mostly latin people) I am myself black and I find many black people beautiful. So on a personal level I am not shocked and I find it refreshing to hear a person state that they not only find certain black people handsome or beautiful but the black race in general. It flips the notion many have. I have heard before that most black women look avarage at best and many arent even pretty at all. But that when a black woman is beautiful she is out of this world. (Again I don't agree with this but I heard so many versions of this my whole life) That I internalized it and often times assume that anybody that isn't black only finds a handfull of black people extra beautiful and most not attractive at all. And not even in a racist way or anything. Just that people don't tend to find us the most stunning. More so because we look so very different from alomst every ethnic group/race.

Because that’s your opinion. Objective vs subjective. Of course you can subjectively think Africans are better, objectively Europeans are, because they have the most diverse range of features and colors. @@afrosamourai400 Her point was that black men in her circles were chasing after white women so black women ultimately did the same and ended up marrying white men. Seems to be a common reason amongst black women even today. If you consider all of the top black female entertainers of that era they also ended up marrying white men. Some of them had several marriages that were to white men. Dorothy Dandridge, Diahann Carrol, Pearl Bailey, Josephine Baker, etc. It's pretty sad. I do believe the women because for the most part black women desire the love of a black man but that doesn't seem to be returned once black men get status and money. It's pretty damn sad and I'm a black man calling black men out. Look at a lot of your top athletes in every sports and my point stands corrected.

Although it might be difficult to understand as an observer the shortest route is the obvious route but what if that is blocked or worst still perilous, that's when the alternative route that's longer becomes a necessitated choice. What stood out was the character of Harry Belafonte's courageous determination to continue support for Activism groups in the face of backlash from his own community and other's including the press. Yes his forthright honesty lost him many supporters but his integrity was still intact. He earned himself centre stage recognition and used his profile to good effect for many causes dearly important to him also the community leaders he worked in partnership with. To summarise where we started, Harry chose the longer route one fraught with difficulties and perilous with great commitment in his own words, quote "Art in its highest form is art that serves and instructs society and human development". unquote. Thanks Karine for another great vlog featuring another wonderful icon. Your work is truly appreciated and in my humble opinion without offence second to none on this platform. 🌹

People thought both were Italian, Puerto Rican, Mexican or Biracial. Until Dwayne Johnson stated my mom is Samoan and my dad is Black. White people still didn't want to believe he is black.

He didn’t date black woman but he supported black women. Check out the documentary about the black opera singer at university of Austin who wasn’t allied to perform. Belafonte offered to pay her tuition to another school and also helped her get work when she graduated.

Mr. Belafonte was indeed a beautiful man. Dorothy Dandridge was breathtakingly beautiful as well. Incidentally, Halle Berry is cute, but in no way is her beauty comparable to Dorothy's. Perhaps Mr. Belafonte said that to Ms. Kitt, and perhaps he did not. One thing is certain. He spent millions of dollars of his own money to support Dr. King's family and the Civil Rights Movement. For so many of his critics, I wonder how many of them have ever given one dime to charity, the Civil Rights Movement, or to any noble cause? Even if they have, I must wonder how many make it a regular part of their lifestyle, like Mr. Belafonte said. We still love Mr Belafonte.

Hey! Karine! Great content as always. See if you can find out more about Harry Belafonte's last wife, Julie Robinson, I always thought she had either American Indian or Black roots. It was surprising to hear she was "White", as her appearance seemed otherwise, I guess she was just very tanned. I'm "72" so this story was extremely interesting to me. Excellent work! I don't understand the double standards. For example, people are saying he's West Indian, mixed race so he can date other races. But if a black man has two black parents. Why shouldn't he be expected to date or like his own black race of women by the same logic. Just asking.🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️ One man is considered a sell out and race traitor and one isn't. I feel that all races of people should be open to dating someone in their own race. If you never meet that person or bond enough to marry that's fine. But don't have hatred issues toward your own. These issues do show up in your relationship with your kids. Your kids will be considered black and treated as such.🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️JMO

@@kaybee126Who can discern whether Harry rejected black women? At the height of the Jim Crow era, colorism played a major role throughout Black culture and even in the Entertainment industry. Lena Horne admitted that she knew a White man could get her into places that Black men couldn't. In fact, she, Harry, Sidney Poitier, Pearl Bailey, and Dorothy Dandridge were all married to black spouses until they achieved superstardom. Then they began dating and married White spouses. No doubt this was primarily for status reasons and because of the social settings that they were surrounded by.

I've watched many of your videos and finally subscribed. Totally enjoyed this one, Harry Belafonte is an icon, and as a person of Jamaican ancestry myself, I have a special regard for him. As for his relationships with White women, he is an extremely handsome man, I'm sure women of all colors were throwing themselves at him, and sometimes you just can't choose where your heart will fall. His activism speaks for itself. I would love to see a video about "Dinah Washington"- she is one of the greats, and there is not a whole lot out there about her life, not sure if you've already done one on her, but I am sure you would do a great job. Keep up the good work.

Commenters want to control who black men choose in their lives-- by demanding similarity in skin tone. If people CHOOSE not to marry someone who looks like them, their parents, or descendants-- that's their business. It's always the same group trying to suppress their own race and others. Why don't you hold black female celebrities to the same standards, instead of championing them ALL THE TIME, when they go outside of their own skin tone or race.
