What do you think of the Permanent Portfolio from Harry Browne?

In your 7 inflation hedge portfolio, you mentioned an emergency fund replacement portfolio. I would love to get the M1 Pie on that, a video would also be great.
Thanks for all the info. Your videos and website are a wealth of knowledge. Please keep doing what you do!

Thanks for your information it’s really nice to hear someone that understands about stock market. Could you please bring your ideas about investing outside of the United States on developing countries and also non-developing countries, which ETFs to use?

Dont you think it is very risky investing so much in medium and long term bonds considering the interest rate of almost 0? Does it make sense to expect a good behaviour of long and medium term bonds?
@OptimizedPortfolio2 жыл бұрын
As always, depends on one's goal(s), time horizon, and risk tolerance. The Permanent Portfolio utilizes half short and half long bonds, so an average of intermediate, which, all else equal, is a one-size-fits-most duration.

50% of this is in stuff that has no yield and just sits there, and 25% is in a super low yielding asset. Seems pretty bad to me unless you're entire strategy is waiting for a crash to buy all stocks very cheap and turn it into a boglehead 3 fund! Fed needs to raise interest rates at least .75% for me to jump into bonds. Good to see you doing videos again.

Yield isn't everything; bonds have returns too. Though of course with where interest rates are those expected returns are low for the near future, as you hinted at. But more importantly, once again, we're not talking about a portfolio of bonds in isolation, which would be a dumb idea. We're talking about bonds held alongside stocks and gold - to which they are uncorrelated on average - which is a completely different picture. Many - including myself - are also not interested in trying to time the market or interest rate changes. But yes, as I mentioned, regardless of interest rates, 25% in cash is a bit high for my tastes.

H. Browne is another permanent-bear. like Schiff, Dalio, Grantham, Rosenberg, Roubini, Taleb, etc. Those who followed HB's advice massively underperformed the S&O 500 index and every other basic stock/bond strategy.
@OptimizedPortfolio Жыл бұрын
In fairness, the PP is a completely different strategy than an S&P 500 index fund. Those 2 strategies are for 2 very different investors. You realize the S&P can't just be an arbitrary benchmark for everything, right?

Going back to your VOOG vs VOOV comparison video. I believe is VOOG because I noticed that index has value stocks with sales and earnings that are growing such as Unitedhealth, Pfizer, and Jp Morgan Chase. VOOV looks like it purely focuses on Value with little emphasis on growing sales and earnings. What are your thoughts?
@OptimizedPortfolio2 жыл бұрын
VOOV is Value stocks. VOOG is Growth stocks. There's some overlap. I noted all this in the video.

If you were inheriting a couple hundred million in the 1980s and wanted to live the easy life without thinking about money, this probably would do you just fine. On the other hand, if you've got that kind of money, you can hire someone to think about money for you.
