Never met the legend but did dine at his restaurant on my only visit to Chicago.Got to attend a Cubs game @ Wrigley Field that he announced on that trip.My most memorable quote by him was during a WGN televised broadcast. He shouted, "the good Lord must want the Cubs to win!" They did in spite of their subpar play that game.I don't recall who they were playing but it was when he was plugging for Old Style over the airwaves.I believe Harry was pretty sloshed, imagine that.Steve Stone was in the booth with him.I really miss those broadcasts.

Imagine... Harry Caray AND Jack Buck in the same booth. And mentioning Mike Shannon, who later went on to his own 50 yr broadcasting career with the Cardinals. As a boy in StL... I just turned 72... in the days before headphones, I used to strap my transistor radio over my ear with a belt so I could listen to Jack & Harry broadcast the Cardinal games while I mowed lawns in my neighborhood. Couldn't stand to miss an inning. Broke my heart when Harry was fired. I worried that Jack wouldn't make it alone. 😂 He ended up doing OK, I guess:) Vintage Gold, here...

First time I ever heard this. Born in raised St. Louis, South Side. Harry Caray WAS the Cardinals. His call of the Cardinals winning the pennant on the last day of the 1964 season was a classic. We worried he was going to die of a heart attack, he was that excited! There was actually a phonograph record made that I got and played over and over to relive the moment. In my neighborhood, Harry was a like a member of everyone's family. I got drafted in 1968 and sent off to the war and didn't return to St. Louis. Harry's one of the few things from the place that I miss.

The rumor at the time was that Harry had an affair with Susan Busch, the daughter in law of Cardinals owner and Anheuser-Busch CEO Gussie Busch, and that's why he was fired. Not long after that, Susan Busch was divorced from August Busch III and Harry moved on first to Oakland then Chicago. In the 80s, after Harry was happily married to Dutchie, Harry kind of admitted to the affair and confirmed that's why he was fired from the Cardinals.

They made it legendary as the staple of the seventh inning stretch during home games. Outside of that it's not really a thing. Most teams don't even have a "seventh inning stretch" and if they do they're usually doing some kind of promotional thing on the field with a mascot racing fans or something. Nobody is singing "take me out to the ballgame" outside of wrigley field, not even at white sox games where it actually started.

Harry had to have known that he was fired. He is litigating it live on air, and he becomes sentimental about his time with the Cardinals as if it is a done-deal. He begins telling others about how much he enjoyed working with them. Wouldn't you think that he would have picked up the phone in the control booth to verify the story? A 12 inning game. Both starting pitchers pitched the entire game. Gibson got the complete game win on three days rest. In fact four of his last five starts that year were extra inning games. He had 28 complete games that season. (Justin Verlander has 26 in his CAREER, and he leads all "active" players). He also had a better batting average than two that Cardinals in the starting lineup that day. And the next year, he finished with a .303 batting average (124 plate appearances). The game was so much different then. Not saying that is good or bad, just different.

Harry Caray and Jimmie Piersall were like an improv team announcing baseball games. The White Sox were awful and those two sugarcoated nothing. They were equal parts merciless and hilarious. Then Harry went to the Cubs and became a drunken lovable uncle figure.

In his autobiography, Bill Lee told the story about the time he, Carlton Fisk and a couple of other Red Sox players went out to a nightclub in Chicago to see a dinner show and have a few cocktails. The MC said something like "We have a very famous guest from the sports world here this evening", and Fisk starts to stand up to soak in the applause. The MC goes, "So let's hear it for...Harry Caray!" To which Fisk, half in the bag, shouts out "BIG F'ING DEAL!" Supposedly he and his teammates were lucky to escape with their lives.

He told the story about spending late night in Memphis at the rondeveau eating ribs after hours with Elvis who heard he was staying at the Peabody and sent the boys across the street to invite him over. He drank beer all night and Elvis didn't drink but as we know was likely medicated.

Harry was a true professional. He could’ve told the Cardinals to shove it where the sun doesn’t shine on the last day of the season for telling the AP and UPI before him. But if he did that, he probably wouldn’t have been the Voice of the White Sox from 71-81 then Cubs on WGN from 82-97.

Harry was a A-hole if a player didn’t kiss his ass, he would go out of his way to make his life miserable. If you don’t believe me ask Bill Melton. He didn’t and Harry ran him out of Chicago

I was at a game where Harry was broadcasting from center field of the old Cominsky. Fish net in all hoping to net a huge Dick Allen homer. He was tanked by the second inning from everyone buying him beers. Falstaff. Ugh! Urine in a bottle or can. Great memories. "He struck him out!!!: Jack Brickhouse collapsed getting ready to attend Carey's funeral. I believe he died a few days later. Weird
