One of the finest songs ever written and sung by one of the most talented story tellers
@dkshotwell13 жыл бұрын
I first heard this at age 11 in 1973, it burrowed itself into my brain like a tick, and i have loved this mans music ever since. He didnt just sing songs, he told tales, every tune was a short story. HC was the last of a kind.

The best songs either take you someplace or make you feel something. This song does both, a rarity. This is perhaps the best story song I've ever heard. That's what happens when you write from the heart - it makes it easier to appeal to other hearts.

I saw Harry at a coffee shop in Bryn Mawr many years ago. He was great then. He still is. Thank you. Thank you.

Harry did a Hungerthon at our radio station in Detroit about a year before he died. He just came in all by himself, spent the entire day on the air with us and then did a one of a kind concert in the round with him, Gordon Lightfoot, James Taylor and John Denver. No band. All of them backed each other on each song. It was a magical night and a very very special day. HE had arranged the entire concert himself by calling his friends and asking. Truly a remarkable guy.

I like what the person said about Harry never making it on American Idol - most music of today lacks any cohesiveness let alone tells a story and sends chills up your spine. There are a few exceptions but very few. Even in his day - Harry wasn't a top 10 at selling discs but was and still is a Top 1 poet, writer, and entertainer! Let the music live on!

The best music sometimes comes from personal experience as this song does. I must have listened to this song a hundred times back in '72. My 40th high school reunion is this year, and this song is a bitter sweet memory of that time in my life.

I had forgotten how hauntingly beautiful this song was until just listening to it.I got tired of "acting" when living in my handsome home,and this could be the story of my life, right down to the sequel of this song.Harry's songs all have such deep meaning to me,they mirror my life.What a talent we lost when we lost him.RIP Harry xx

Right around this time. when Johnny Carson still had the tonight show in NYC; I decided to get 2 free tickets,. I've always lived in the Hartford CT area; so it was an easy bus trip.But the evening became one huge surprise ! I met two young women from Chicago We first went to see the tonight show. As it turned out we first had trouble getting into the studio, but with their help we got in. We then went to an an an Italian Restaurant . But WOW! The treated me to a gig at the Bitter End in NYC to see Harry Chapin; With Cheech and chong. I had goosebumps as I watched him sing taxi. This is one time I will never forget.

I never, sad to say, got to see him live.... I was five when he died. But I grew up on music like this, and I am all the better for it. Harry remains one of my personal heroes. A storyteller and a humanitarian.... that's the kind of person a creative like me should look up to. :)

I've been on and off listening to Harry's music since I was a kid but listening to his songs again recently I've appreciated it more and learnt so much about him, I knew he passed away at a young age but never the causes. I never knew how much he did for the world as well, I am very glad that one day my brother brought home the album and played it in his room because if he hadn't, I doubt I would ever have found Harry! One of my favs this one, ty for uploading

My nickname in h. s. was Harry, which I earned about a year before this song came out. Once it came out, people starting saying to me: Hey Harry! keep the change! For what seemed like at least a couple of months, I never knew what they were talking about because I hadn't heard the song. It became a part of what people regularly said to me. What a great song, & a great singer he was! I saw him perform at Boston U a couple of months before his death. Gone too early! from Harry!

What ever happened to music? The true artists like Harry Chapin are gone and their music is gone with them. Remember when songs were music and they had soul and meaning? Nobody told a story with a song greater than Chapin, though.

"Video" is what happened to music. Back in Harry's day, and before, a recording artist had only your ears to reach, and if they failed, they were out of business.
