From a 80year old....One of the greatest black and white films ever and probably the finest music to it, every time I hear it, it reminds me of my mother and father who loved it! they don't make them or play them like this anymore.....

When visiting Vienna in 1991, I had to go on the Ferris wheel where Joseph Cotton confront Olson Welles on selling watered down penicillin. But oh that closing scene where Alida Valli walks by Cotton with that haunting zither must be the classic of all times. I saw the movie 60 years ago no never get tired of it

I remember, as a kid, my mother (Australian), who married an Austrian (during WW2), raving about the movie, and as much as she loved classical music (she was a trained violinist), one of her great favourites was The Harry Lime Theme, played, of course, by Anton Karas. Bravo! Bravo! (And many thanks to the old bloke, who just rang the ABC Radio Station to which I was listening and reminded me of this piece and days, long past.)

Heard this song years ago in the 2001 movie XXX starring Vin Diesel. It is being played by a musician just as his character, Xander Cage, goes to a nightclub with a cop he met up with in Prague to see if they can see Yorgi and his crew. This tune has stuck with me all these years and it wasn’t until I heard it played by the beatles in the documentary “Get Back” just days ago that I came to know the name of this song!

When you were very young, my love affair with your great city began. It is and ever shall remain my favourite capital city on the planet. Long after the Belvedere Treaty but before the fall of the Soviet empire in Eastern Europe, Vienna still possessed a mystique because it was the “clearing house” between two worlds. As late as the early `80s, Russian was more often heard than English. There was an almost palpable sense of intrigue; one kept one’s business dealings and meetings discreet. Conversations in public places were low-key; the atmospheres of some of the little bars frequented by foreigners on business (sometimes, on whose business was open to question!) like the Conti (now vanished) adjacent to the Bristol on the Kärntner Ring were distinctly surreptitious. This music perfectly conjures up for me those, more recent, times rather than the film itself (which must be one of the dozen best movies of the last century).

+jeanbeauchemin, whilst the murky world evoked by Greene in “The Third Man” may have vanished, it has been supplanted by other, equally sinister and threatening, phenomena. My generation of Westerner has not yet realised quite how privileged it was to grow up in an environment of intellectual freedom unparalleled in modern history. This freedom is under assault in Europe and in the USA from governments, which are using pretext of “security” to appropriate for themselves greater controls over media and expressions of thought. For those who achieve it, whether vi et armis or through the ballot-box, power seems an addiction incapable of permanent satisfaction, requiring ever-stronger “fixes” to keep the cravings at bay...... “The Third Man” (aided by a fine storyline and screenplay) may have been one of the greatest examples of the 20th Century cinema; another was “The Great Dictator”, which I was prompted to re-visit by the demagoguery on display in the current US election process; and which should be screened in every secondary school!

Hmmm.. I know what you mean about intrigue in Vienna. Back then I always feared that too many Austrians thought the 'wrong side' came out on top in that nasty business that ended in1945. Do they still feel like that? Do they secretly approve of the individual now in the White House?
