I’m 87 and having visited Wien twice a year between 1957 and 1988 on business and also to visit my great aunt who lived there since 1948 and my GranUncle visiting her yearly from Buenos Aires, I cannot hear enough music from there and consider The Third Man movie the best after the war film. Will try to find a photo of myself, my great uncle, my grandfather, my great aunt at Anton Karas’ restaurant in Grinzing - he played the theme for us - unforgettable.

Da sollten Sie sich den Film "Der Dritte Mann" ansehen, dort ist die Musik am besten aufgehoben, weil Karas sie komponierte, während er den Film sah. Es gibt kaum eine stimmigere Filmmusik. This spine chilling music captivated me as a ~12 year old but only because the book was read to me in a Grammar school English lessons by a delightful and cultivated English teacher. I don't recall first hearing but the film did from first view and 50+ years later has never left me. Anton Karas devises the perfect score for the best film ever made and no coincidence it was Carol Reed, Joseph Cotten and Orson Welles that made an indelible impression on me which remains today - Ponto, Weintraub, et al gave such superb performances, all from the canon of German Impressionist film making. Geniuses at work and what corridors in my mind they directed me to......still walking through door after door.

Thousand thanks for such a nice comment. At least I am not the only one who feels that way. I am born in Vienna and lived there to my middle 20's! Thanks again. The bridge you see there in the movie is not there anymore (Reichsbruecke) I believe it collapsed on a Summer Sunday early morning with only 1 car on it. A few hours later, there would have been many more casualties (thousends) because everyone wanted to go to the 'Gaensehaufl' a bad at the old Danube or just to the old Danube swimming.

In my library I have a copy of the script with the Orson Welles additions, a copy of the original Graham Greene story, a vinyl LP of all the original music and a VHS copy of the movie. Think about it, superb direction by Carrol Reed at the top of his game, superb cinematography by Krasker at the top of his game, brilliant script and story by one of the great storytellers, fantastic settings in bombed out Vienna and four amazing acting leads (Howard, Cotton, Welles and Valli) and an excellent supporting cast and that great music by Anton Karas to tie it all together. Can anyone tell me of another movie which has all these boxes ticked?

The original critics in 1949)50. To them " USING A PRIMITIV FOLK INSTRUMENT ONLY USED BY FARMERS AND SIMPLE MINDED COUNTRY FOLK DOES NOT BELONG INTO AN ENTERTAINMENT MOVIE"" Back in those days that statement was readable in a lot of magazines and newspaper articles world wide. Indeed, it had been the first time in movie history that a major movie tune had been carried by a Folk Art Instrument just used for traditional local songs. So the ZITTER in here was greundbraking. But the movie did also CULTURE HISTORY in FASHION. The duffle coat TREVOR HOWERD sported as the leading Military Police Officer became a STANDARD ITEM since then. Personaly I have loved those coats very much.
