Harry sings this song as a bitter, furious, suicidally despairing breakup song with the American Dream. The overly tragic tale of his ruining his voice is pretty much a half-baked myth. Throats heal. His did. It became darker and rougher, but you can say the same thing about Sinatra's when he was in his fifties. On his last completed album, "Knnillssonn," Harry Nilsson was still able to toss off the high notes he was famous for.

This was my introduction to all things Newmanesque! I heard this track originally on a Best of/ Greatest hits album so thought that it came from the Nilsson sings Newman record! An amazing rendition by Harry with lovely, lush orchestration.

Thanks man Harry Nillson was according to the Beatles the best songwriter they had ever met. The young folk have no idea what great songs he wrote for others like Kris kristofferson cant sing a llck but man what a songwriter he has been. I guess randy Newman has talent also guess ill have to look into it deeper but when I suggested Harry wrote it I was accused of being illiterate and told not to write till my Grammer improved hope they look up Harry Nillson maybe they will figure out who is or isn't educated. Aye. These times and all this anger so sad hope they all don't go mental from lockdown but if there is a free check for it lazy s.o.b.s will be disabled for life. @Mike 7 months ago,, Harry Nilsson wasn't American, he was Scottish. Randy Newman - who wrote the song - is American. Harry Nilsson was never American nor claimed to be, although he did live there for a bit before he died of alcoholism - such a happy country----not!!!! Sorry for your ignorance. For your information, Scotland is a country north of England on the British isles 3000 miles from the East coast of America. Though I doubt you could even pick it up from a map.
