since you’re finished with this series i’ll try to explain voldemort’s lineage in an easy way bc it’s so confusing, lol. his mother (merope gaunt) was a witch who used a love potion on the muggle man she fell in love with, that being tom riddle sr. she had a child with him (voldemort) under that love potion, and eventually stopped giving it to him thinking that tom sr would stay on his own accord. he did not, and left the pregnant merope alone. she gave birth and died in the orphanage we see in the 6th movie, leaving voldemort an orphan. he grew up hating muggles because of his father and eventually killed him. this is what lead to his radical hatred of all muggles, coupled with the fact that he is literally unable to feel love due to being conceived under a love potion. also, his mother is a descendant of salazar slytherin, which is why he is the heir! i hope this makes sense!

Vernon Dursley comes from a very conservative English family. They like things to be normal and dependable, predictable. They have nothing but contempt for those who show off or act unusual. They have no patience or respect for anything weird. And it's not merely a thing of not wanting to be around weird or unusual things, but a deep desire to put down anything weird or unusual. Petunia Dursley grew up resentful over her sister Lily having magical powers she never had. There was such fuss over Lily going off to Hogwarts (plus, Petunia did write Hogwarts, asking to attend, but off course was turned down; Hogwarts is where magical training and strengthening is taught, and Petunia was straight muggle). Being saddled with baby Harry was bad enough, but Harry has her sister's eyes; can't have been easy raising the child of her dead sister. The Dursleys don't so much hate Harry as they hate the weirdness associated with him (or the guilt Petunia is likely to feel resenting Harry and feeling guilty for resenting him). Harry would do much better with them if he just renounced the weirdness and settled down to somber sober living, if he was just NORMAL. Instead, his weird witchy parents got blown up, Harry is dumped on their doorstep to raise, and they feel like they've been stuck with the cost and inconvenience. You'll notice they stuffed Harry in the least bit of space they could find, clothed him in Dudley's old clothes, and try to get compensation by requiring him to do tasks around the house. Basically, he's not seen as part of their family, just a burden foisted on them under threat from a powerful wizard (Dumbledore). Vernon says he doesn't want to pay some old fool to teach the boy 'magic tricks' (actually, Hogwarts education is free, the food is free, the sheltering is free, the travel covered; all Harry has to do is buy his school uniforms, books, and basic school supplies). The Dursleys hate encouraging the weirdness more than having Harry good for most of the year; Harry will just return between terms more established in the 'nonsense'. They just want to put a stop to it and for Harry to settle down to being a normal person. __________________________________________________________________________________________________ This was not a 'sequel'. The Potter books and the Potter film franchise were never conceived as a first publication/release followed by sequels. JK Rowling spent 17 years working through the story as a lengthy saga. She wrote it as one long story. Part of why it hangs so well together is that she went through it forwards and backwards and sideways and all around to nail down and interweave everything in the story. She wrote, rewrote, edited, interjected, expanded, condensed, and filled out everything in the saga to make it rich and deep. She selected where to introduce new concepts and where to do callbacks; what might seem like a throwaway in one book/film returns several books/films later as a pivotal item. It was all planned that way from the start. A sequel has to function within the parameters of the original story canon. One of the reasons sequels are so unsatisfying is because they end up feeling watered down having shot their original ideas in the first production. Sequels aren't as innovative because the parameters stifle creativity. Sequels are add-ons working under the weight and confined by the structure of previous completed works. The Potter saga as a completed work is the sum total of ALL its books/films; each book/film is a chapter in the whole. __________________________________________________________________________________________________ JK Rowling is a genius for writing a story so big that it not only covers the growth and maturation of the characters but also stays in step with the books' readership, being published annually and the reading level advancing with each book. But Wait! There's MORE!!! The metaphysics were deeply researched; these aren't purely made up, but rest on actual historical references. There was a time when being educated meant taking the metaphysics in this book as serious science and applied/theoretical knowledge. Even the robes and gothic environment mirrors 15th and 16th century college/university custom. Consider, 'PhD' stands for 'Doctor of Philosophy'; it references learning a branch of Natural Philosophy, what we call 'physics' today. Natural Philosophy was the study of how Nature is formed and functions. Now consider that Latin was considered the language of education. Spells and incantations have historically been spoken in Latin since the Middle Ages; you see this in surviving woodcuts and manuscripts from that era. But WAIT!!! There's MORE!!!!! If you delve into the names of the characters, you'll find they were chosen with great care. Understanding the meaning of the names will give you insight into each of the characters. JK Rowling drew the names from mythology, folklore, faerie tales, astronomy, Greek, Latin, Gaelic, Norse, even Victorian Flower Language. Some were puns (Hagrid for hag-ridden. In Victorian Flower Language, 'Lily' (Harry's mother) means 'purity/beloved' and 'Petunia' (Harry's aunt) means 'anger/resentment'. The most intense name is Remus Lupin; 'lupin' is Latin for 'wolf' and Remus was the twin brother of Romulus. Romulus and Remus are considered the founders of Rome ('Rome' comes from 'Romulus') and said to have been suckled by a she-wolf. Sirius Black is easy to figure out. 'Sirius' is better known as the 'Dog Star'. And 'Black' means black. Sirius Black is an unregistered animagus who takes the form of a black dog and is fiercely loyal to the Potter family. Check out the other names...

Not only that by the way, but I suspect there's 'hatred' for the magic world due to the fact it was the cause of Lily's death, too. It is often mentioned how Harry's eyes are just like his mothers, and I imagine that is a difficult thing to process for Petunia. With that said, this isn't justification for how she (and they) treat Harry. Petunia needed therapy, aha.

Just happened across as I was looking for HP reactions I hadn't seen yet, you popped up and you guys are great. 5 months too late but I can't wait to experience your roller coaster and also to have an awesome husband that, so far, is doing a lovely job of explaining some things without spoiling anything in the process - so many reactors I've seen are so confused with certain bits or don't realize something happened that was important and then they get a bit lost because a lot of the book explanations and deep dives, do not appear in the movies due to time constraints with book to movie adaptations. There's actually a reason why the Dursely's are so aggressive towards Harry and it gives a better look at the explanation in the book and also why Harry couldn't just leave the Dursely's - the home where his blood dwells - was a sealed bond of blood that Dumbledore placed upon Harry and Petunia so that he would be safe so long as he calls it home and requiring harry to return there each year. The expression on her face when Tom rearranged the letters of his name to read 'I Am Lord Voldemort' lol epic!! The whole conversation involving Voldemort's mother and his father being muggle yet he's the Heir of Slytherin was so amusing too and it is kind of mind boggling if you actually go and trace people's lineage through the Pure Blood family lines, it is really quite interesting! You mentioned it being a hail mary for Harry to stab the book with the fang - I think it might also have been him hearing Tom say 'The damage a silly little book can do in the hands of a silly, little, girl'.

@@TheHappyCryers Gotcha, And thank you! Plus if you rewatch this movie, listen to what Dobby is saying before he acts, Dobby was hoping that if he got Harry in enough trouble, or not wanted there by the people he thought cared, he would have to stay at his Aunts and Uncles, away from the danger at Hogwarts. It's hard for reaction channels to pick up on some things when your trying to react and discuss, so I understand how most would not get what Dobby was trying to do. Plus the books give a better discription of characters and story. You know how it is when they make a movie. They cut half of the book out of it, or even change what happens. Anyway see you on the next one. And I hope I'm around to see your channel grow! Xx ☺

The dursleys didn’t want Harry to go to hogwarts because they hated magic. That is very much explained in the books.
