Alan Rickman knew Snape's motivation from Rowling from the start of filming even though just 4 books were written at the time. He never revealed what she told him and even refused directors orders because of it, he held onto his promise not reveal what he was told even after the films were finished. He played Snape brilliantly, in retrospect there are so many subtle expressions, gestures and nuances to Snape that suggest there is more to him that meets the eye, something that simply could not be done in the books because it would give too much away. Snape is one of the most complex and surprising character in literature and even so much more in film thanks to the great Alan Rickman.

This right here is why rewatching and seeing all of snape's scenes with harry is so magical-- and Alan knew that would happen. Instead of the random switch up, you could always see Snape holding something back, always tell he cared more than he let on. Alan Rickman was a great actor-- nobody else could have ever played snape in my mind.

I wouldn't say one of the most complex characters in literature. You must not have read enough literature. But, certainly one of the most complex characters in mainstream cinema, and one of the best. I'd say maybe the second best, most profound 'anti-heroes' in all of fiction, though maybe it's more like 3rd or something. Easily the best British example, right along aside Moore's Watchmen (if we count this as British -- under DC, an American company). Rickman was perfect and, yes, he knew all about Snape from early on.

@@TheClassicWorld @Classic World I agree mostly (I have been bookworm since childhood actually 😏) but I still think Snape's arch is unique because for 7 books and tausends of pages he is mostly suspected as a vilian, with doubts, but negatively overall, then he is a murderer and traitor until suddenly at the end of the 7th book there's a nearly 180° turn explaining his actions in a completely different light from the very beginning. That's pretty unique in my opinion...

It wasn't from the start.... He wanted to quit the franchise and Rowling gave him this piece of info to keep him there. Once Alan Rickman was told this crucial information he knew it was very important to stay in this role and really connected to it.

Snape didn’t love Lily. He was infatuated with her and saw her as a possession. You don’t truly love someone if you are willing to betray her husband and son and then have no remorse for it asking only that Voldemort spare Lily for him but having no care whatsoever that James and Harry would die. He’s an incel who was always selfish and the only reason he switched sides was to get revenge against Voldemort for selfish reasons. He never renounced his old way of thinking or showed remorse for the terrible things he’d done. He was upset because the woman he simped over who didn’t love him and told him she wanted no part of him because of how despicable he was got killed. He never ever actually cared for Harry and always resented him because he was part of James and made him jealous. Even at the end when Dumbledore asks “even after all this time don’t tell me you have come to care for the boy” he flat out says “no” and then produces the patronus of a doe showing his obsession with Lily. If he truly loved Lily he would care for Harry and love him because it’s the last part of her. He was brutally mean to Harry and it wasn’t cause he was “hiding it”. There was never a reason to “hide it.” He was a murderer, bigot, and torturer who bullied children mercilessly. Making fun of a 12 year olds girl’s (hermione) teeth to pick out one of her insecurities and break her down so much so that she felt like she had to magically alter her appearance permanently and for one of your students biggest fear in the world to be you when said student (Neville) has actually experienced other true horrors like with what happened to his parents is disgusting. He’s a grown adult verbally and mentally abusing children. Snape is a loathsome and vile person and deserved much worse than he got. He is a small small man and I hate that people think he was a hero. He wasn’t. Everything he did was for himself and no one else and some of those selfish deeds happened to help the good side but that doesn’t make him a hero.

And the boy's initials are ASP; and he DOES end up in Slytherin House. By the way, more than once someone's prejudicial and/or superficial opinion is stated as if unshakeable fact, but is in fact baseless. That includes the surmise that Slytherin House was all villains and dark wizards. Houses are based on certain mutual values, and it so happens the values held by Slytherins can too easily trail into the Dark, but even Slytherins have choice. Draco came back. Slughorn was a Slytherin and fought on the side of Hogwarts, against Voldemort. Prospering is a Slytherin value, and both Draco and Slughorn saw no prospering under Voldemort's rule. @@holddowna

That actually wasn’t the case what so ever as he initially pulled his wand out on Harry so the last of his worries was threatening somebody he cared about. He could of just not put his wand to Harry and it not happened. So sorry to tell you but you’re just wrong. If anything , her stepping in was bad and could of ended all hopes of defeating Voldemort. Snape didn’t know about Harry disarming Draco. Snape knew Harry would use the disarming spell out of any if threatened so Snape was trying to make the elder want become Harry’s. Luckily it already was. If Harry didn’t disarm Draco , her stepping in to defend him would of meant Harry wouldn’t of been the real owner at the end which is the whole reason the wand stops working and lets Harry defeat him.

Great reaction - regarding the resurrection stone: The stone never was able to actually resurrect anyone - in the story of the three brothers, it just lets the brother who wished for it see his lost love. But they were still separated and could not touch. And in exactly the same way when Harry took the stone into his hands, he saw all the people he loved and lost. They gave him that final measure of incredible courage. And since they've always been there (as Sirus pointed to his heart), he no longer needed the stone. He knew they were with him. That's why he dropped the stone.

You could take skimpy notes during that, if you liked, and maybe turn that into an outline for your review. Just a thought.

As amazing as Alan Rickman was as Snape, and believe me, he was incredible, I feel that the movies took away a lot of Snape details that you are going to discover with the books. Snape's worst memory being one of them. The scene in Order of the Phoenix cut out the true reason why it haunted him so much. In fairness to the filmmakers, Phoenix was in the can before Book 7 was published, so they had no way of knowing why it was so horrible to cut Young Lily's scene out of it and just focusing on James' bullying. The scene WAS filmed though; there's pictures you can Google of Harry standing between the memory of his young parents arguing over Snape, and I question why they've never put the footage into an extended cut with the knowledge they have now. But yeah, with Snape, the movies do not cover the horrible things he committed towards Harry and Neville in particular. Not because he was spying, but just because he was vindictive and bitter about how horrible his life turned out and was lashing out in pain all the time. When the chips are down and the situation calls for it, there is nobody more brave and true than Severus Snape. He is not good. He is not evil. He's the ultimate shade of gray, and Rowling's writing puts that picture much more into focus than the movies do, so I hope you enjoy reading about it.

The movies leave out some of the bad things Snape did, but they also leave out a lot of the good things he did do. Nor do they show all the trauma that he suffered and that led him to be an immature adult who was not fully capable of regulating his feelings and his actions (with Hagrid, Lupine and Sirius something very similar happens)

True the movies paint James as this evil villain and Snape as some saint. James was indeed a bully and I in no shape or form condone bullying… however…James grew out of it as an adult while Snape went to the Dark Arts…(no…bullying is no excuse for Dark Arts sorry)…yes…Snape eventually redeemed himself which I am happy…but to paint James potter as this bad guy who wasn’t good for Lily is sad…James hated the Dark Arts…joined the Order of Phoenix to fight against Voldemort…died protecting his family going 1 on 1 against the most powerful dark wizard of all time WITHOUT a wand. Wish they cleared that up about James. Happy Snape redeemed himself at the end
@Lancun
@Lancun Жыл бұрын
@Abdur Rehman Ali I mean, the Dark Arts does not equal evil. Dark Arts includes curses. Many wizards on the light side used Confringo, the Blasting Curse. Severus himself used the Killing Curse at Dumbledore's request even though he knew it would hurt his soul to do so. Why did he do it? Because he was fighting for the side of good. If he weren't as knowledgeable on the effects of Dark Magic, he wouldn't have been able to brew the potion that kept Dumbledore alive for another year. Aurors were allowed to use the Unforgivable Curses once it became clear that Voldemort needed to be taken down at any cost. So the Dark Arts argument that Lily made towards Severus was very naive and childish. Dark Magic can be used by good people and without evil intent. The company he kept, and his goal to become a Death Eater was a more solid argument for her to make than what magic he chose to study.
@jaunbeltza7661
@jaunbeltza7661 Жыл бұрын
@@abdurrehmanali7 No, the movies don't show James as evil, they some him for a comple of second as he was, a bully teenager. James didn't grow out of that, he continued bullying Snape (this time lying to Lily about it) and he even screwed up the date with Petunia and Vernon on purpose. The only thing that made him act more seriously was joining the war. Also, dark arts ≠ evil, there are countless examples. Even Snape, the only time we saw him use black magic as a teenager when he defended himself from his bully and the guy that tried to kill him. And even then, that course wasn't so different from any other they were taugh6at school.

What's extremely heartbreaking about this film is when Harry reveals he isn't dead, for a split second, you see George turn to say "Fred look!" and he turns to an empty side making the F sound with his mouth, you only see it for a fraction of a second but its one POWERFUL second.

Other good reactors - though none seem as good as Ames - include Vikunia (she can be a bit shallow at times, but I love how invested she gets in the characters), Holden Hardman (and his girlfriend, now wife), and SebScreen (a guy not afraid to cry, on screen). It was a magnificent journey Ames - thank you for sharing it with us! As Dumbledore said "Of course it's happening inside your head Harry. Why should that mean it is not real" in translation for the HP readers and viewers that although it is a fantasy world it is real FOR YOU. This always makes me emotional ❤ Also, the whole story is so deep with many layers. For example, as you said the one who was so afraid of death died at a very young age for a wizard (wizards usually live more than 100 years, Voldy was 71); while Harry who accepted death and did not know that he can survive got ( / chose) a second chance at life. This is only one example how well-thought out and poetic HP really is. You are going to LOVE the books. Me as well read them way after being a fan of the films so my advice for you would be not to read too much extra details / book spoilers, because when you are going to read the books it will feel like a whole new adventure again 🧙‍♂ I would be really interested in each book-review if you have time for such. After you read each book a short sumup video of what you thought of it, what made you emotional / laugh, what was surprising ... etc. You are a gem really with a kind heart - I wish I knew you irl 🥰 All the best!!

Ill never forget, i went to the old drive in movie theater and saw Sorcerors Stone and,Lord of the Rings Fellowship as a Double Feature. I am 58 years old now and am rereading the series yet again, probably for the 15th or more time and it Never gets old! I absolutely ADORED your reactions to HP ❤ and I genuinely appreciate you showing your emotions and genuine love for the series ❤❤❤ I grew up watching HP and have watched it countless times and introduced others to it as well. I read all but the last book last year for the first time and would love to see you react again after reading them 👏🏻💕 can’t wait to watch some of your other videos now and I hope that you’re enjoying the books

In the books, Harry had to put a LOT of effort to play dead. Voldemort began using Crucio on his “dead” body to celebrate. Harry was in agony but managed to stay completely silent and immobile.

He wasn't in agony. He was tossed into the air but there was no pain. Voldemort's spells could no longer hurt him, the elder wand was his and Harry's intended sacrifice re-created the magical protection against Voldemort.

@davidwilfand916 Yep and Voldemort can't even Silemce the crowd because Harry's sacrifice protects them against Voldemort.

That's inaccurate, Voldy's wand couldn't hurt Harry because it was loyal to him.

This film series was truly lightning in a bottle. Adaptations are difficult, and filmmaking is difficult. It's rare for both to be done so successfully at the same time.

HBO Max is redoing the franchise as a series. I wasn’t okay with the idea at first, but it’s exciting to wonder what they’ll be able to do better with each book being a season; so the added time and technology will hopefully do the story more justice. I just hope they stay true to the books and not go the Disney route and make unnecessary changes.

If its slow paced (akin to early Game of Thrones) then it'll be brilliant. If it tries too hard and powers through (akin to late Game of Thrones) it'll suck. @@yourlifeisagreatstory

Pleaaase, read the lasts chapters of deatlhy hollows (from the 33 til the end)... It's so much emotional, all the descriptions of the harry feelings, the last conversation with dumbledore, the last duel with voldemort... it's just pure gold

Funny fun fact that you probably didn't notice during Snape's duel with McGonagall, pay close attention to Snape, he redirects McGonagall's magic to the two Deatheaters to stun them and first jumps to both of them to take their wands ^^

I love you now so much Your tears are so contagious, every time you cried I immediately teared up, although the films themselves didn't make me do that. You're such a vulnerable sweet poor little thing when crying, I just felt like hugging you and weeping with you. It was such a right choice to watch the films first, right now you're open to a much deeper, profound world. I didn't cry much for the films, because I had already bawled my eyes out reading. I cried all through Harry/Dumbledore's talk at the end of #5. I wish you have a tremendous time reading these phenomenal books

Was such a fun time seeing you go through this journey. You did amazing reactions and are very honest and very excited for the interview and 20th anniversary reaction.. I don't know if you picked up on it but Snape is Harry's dad! You get a slight hint from Snape saying "he thinks the boy is his" and they have the same charm which doesn't happen from just loving someone but you'll find out more in the books. Looking forward to the rest of this journey with you!

The boy Dumbledore was talking to Draco about in the astronomy tower was Tom Riddle btw. Harry dropped the resurrection stone because contrary to the name, it doesn't truly resurrect people. Like Dumbledore said, there is no magic that brings the dead back. The elder wand can defeat and kill whomever you wish. The resurrection stone lets you see talk to loved ones, despite them being dead. The invisibility cloak lets you shield yourself from most danger, even death itself. That's why together they make you master of death.

I've really enjoyed watching you go through this series. Thank you for sharing it with us! I've watched quite a few first time Potter reactions on yt and I think yours is in my top 3. It's oddly nice to see someone new to the series feel so deeply for a story I've grown up with. I subbed for the potterthon but I'll be sticking around to see what's next. Enjoy the books! You're going to love them. :)

What a magical moment it was to watch you open that new set of Harry Potter books!!! It was sooo touching and exciting that it brought tears to my eyes. Hearing you read lines from the first book was like me reading them for the first time again!!! You should consider doing book reviews after reading each book. It would be fun. 😍
