@@thenaberius6081 Snape was partly the reason why Lily is dead, telling Voldemort about the prophecy, he didn’t know Voldemort would figure out the child that would cause his downfall would be Lily’s son. The other reason Snape hated Sirius so much is because him and James made his life at Hogwarts a living hell, and they almost killed him (accidentally) in one of Lupin’s transformations. Even once he knew the traitor was Pettigrew and not Sirius, he still wanted to falsely accuse him of the murders and take him to the dementors. For me, that was taking it too far, even after all the bad blood between those two.

The reason why Harry spared that rat (Apart from preventing Sirius and Remus to become murderers), Pettigrew was the only living proof of Sirius’s innocence. If they kill him, the truth dies with him and Sirius would never be free. The other thing, none of them expected Lupin to not drink the Wolfsbane Potion that same night, transforming and creating a distraction that Pettigrew took advantage of to escape.

Well, yes and no. It's true killing Pettigrew would have saved some lives including Cedric Diggory and possibly prevent Voldemort's return, but at the same time, it'd make it harder for Sirius to prove his innocence. Though they might clear it up if they have their memories extracted and have their memories recorded/viewed in a Pensieve. It's a shame for Sirius as I love the character but there's basically no hope for him in wizardry world since pettigrew got away and Lupin/Sirius lost their alibi or chances to present their case. I'm sure they'd find a way to help him somehow had he lived.

No argument there, but it did help him later on. In Book 7, Harry and Ron get out of Malfoy's cellar/dungeon because Pettigrew's silver hand (bestowed upon him by Voldemort after his resurrection in Book 4) turned on him. There's theories that the hand sensed weakness in Pettigrew and killed him for it, or that whatever magic Voldemort used to create the hand had a sense of fairness and killed Pettigrew for trying to kill Harry after he spared Pettigrew's life here. Nobody really knows why the silver hand killed Pettigrew in the book, but if Pettigrew had died here, another loyal servant of Voldemort would likely have resurrected him, and whoever the Malfoy's decided to use as a prison guard/household servant in Book 7 likely wouldn't have been bested as easily, or at all.

@ I stopped because I believed the films lost their scary factor. Back in 2005 I saw this scene and wondered what the hell Was going on and who was this guy in the black robes. When Harry returned with the body and said “He’s back. Voldemort’s back.” I was like “that guy in the robes was Voldemort?!! That is not the Voldemort that gave me nightmare fuel and made me hide under the bed sheets back in 2001.
