To quote Inigo Montoya in "The Princess Bride", “You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means.” Even in the first film, there's a child that barely escaped his murder before being left orphaned with neglectful family, another child nearly killed by a giant troll, a teacher annihilated in the bowels of the school, and the ongoing threat of more to come; not particularly whimsical. How does 'whimsy' play into a story that you yourselves are left complaining how Hogwarts is a death trap? (Just chiding you. 😄) But it does get darker and more serious. There will be tears between laughter.
@piratelorde2 ай бұрын
@@chris...9497 according to Merriam-Webster, “whimsy” means “the quality of being whimsical or fanciful”- and “fanciful” is “marked by fancy or unrestrained imagination rather than by reason and experience”. One example given is “a fanciful tale of a monster in the woods”. Nowhere is it required for the imaginative events to be solely positive. A tale filled with magic, adventures, trials, and tribulations can certainly be described as “fanciful”, and therefore “whimsical”. A story with only positive events would certainly be *more* whimsical because it’s less grounded in reality, but their usage of the term here is perfectly fine. 😊 (No shade meant, by the way. Just speaking as someone who’s a big fan of the franchise and this channel!)

So, I'm not only a twilight nerd, I'm a potter nerd. You guys are gonna get so sick of me, if you haven't already. Lol. No spoilers, of course. I never thought the ending of this one was explained properly in the movie. When Voldemort hunted down him and his parents, Lily died trying to protect Harry. Her sacrifice imbued Harry with a powerful magical protection, which is what caused Voldemort's curse to fail and rebound in the first place. But since Lily loved Harry enough to die for him, that's why Dumbledore tells him it was love that saved him. ❤ You guys made a few offhand little jokes that I hope you remember as you watch the rest of the movies. Making your own foreshadowing? Impressive! 😂

A slight correction on 25:42 I know they explained it later on in the movie during the game, but most people still miss it or forget it. Catching the snitch does not mean automatic win. It grants you 150 points and immediately stops the game. If you were at 100 vs. 240 and you caught the snitch, your team would win 250 vs. 240. However, if you were 100 vs. 260 and you caught it, you would lose 250 vs. 260.

It means the Seeker has to be aware not just of where the snitch is, but where the other team's Seeker is and what the current score is and whether another score against your team will come before you catch the snitch. Strategy may include NOT catching the snitch but guarding it against the opposing Seeker until catching it also grants your team a win.

@@whade62000 Quidditch is a game invented by someone baffled by the game rules of most sports. It perfectly demonstrates the seeming randomness of sports rules. As someone who has been exposed to team sports for over a half century and barely grasps the rules of even simple sports like hockey and baseball, I understand this. I'm reminded of the gambling card game of Fizzbin from the original Star Trek series (google it). It makes sense that there would be a team competitive sport unique to the Wizarding World, that it would be a feature of magic school life, and that it would also be a professional sport. It would need to embrace something unique to the Wizarding World, and flying makes more sense than any other kind of magic. And it would need to be more convoluted than muggle sports. Quidditch fills the brief nicely. Yes, it's sloppily-designed, but what would you expect from someone who doesn't follow sports? I don't see Quidditch as being created specifically to elevate Harry, but more like filling out what are common features of UK school life. As it was worked into the story, it lent itself to being used to aggrandize Harry, but I don't think that was the original intent, just a happy accident. Neither of us knows for sure; we have no basis for our differing assumptions, but it's interesting to contemplate the origins and literary purpose of Quidditch. ______________________________________ Post Comment Research: Rowling said she wanted to create a sport that would anger men, and that it made no sense to have a ball worth 150 points. "It infuriates men...which is quite satisfying given my state of mind when I invented it." She invented it after a row with her boyfriend. Rowling said she was thinking about what holds a society together and causes it to congregate, and knew she needed a sport.

I do feel like a lot of side eye could have been avoided if Dumbledore had given them the points in private. Because a) they did voluntarily go to fight an evil wizard to save the world, b) Snape is unfair, and c) they got a ton of points taken away for helping Hagrid (they dwell on it more in the books) who is an adult figure at the school but they don't get to properly defend themselves because they don't want to get Hagrid in trouble. I feel like it's implied (but not very well) that Dumbledore is kind of making up for that injustice. But he could have done that while the three of them were in the hospital wing lol.

The important thing to know about the Dursleys, particularly Vernon, that they don't tell you in the movies, is that the one thing they despise more than Harry himself is the thought of Harry experiencing any sort of joy or fulfillment in life, because they are that miserable and petty. Therefore they would rather endure his presence just to know he continues to be miserable, than to allow him to go off and be happy somewhere else. Once you understand that, their behavior makes a lot more sense.

They've lost so many points mostly because of Snape's favoritism of Slytherin, and I think that's how Slytherin won 6 years in a row. Dumbledore just used the opportunity to make the results fair and kind of punishing Snape for bullying Gryffindor. In the book, there are four big hour-glasses in the hall, one for each house, and everytime they get or lose points, they appear or disappear from inside of them in form of little diamonds. I think that's part of the fun of those stories and where a lot of children's ethics and morals are practiced and cemented. The Goonies, the Hardy Boys, Lion/Witch/Wardrobe, To Kill A Mockingbird, Peter Pan..etc. Kids can handle more than we give them credit for and we forget just how strong we used to be at that age!

The Dursleys do resent being saddled with raising Harry (note that they don't waste money on repairing Harry's glasses and figure Dudley's old clothes are good enough), but they don't HATE him. They DO hate this 'magic nonsense' because it's weird and showy. It's a British middle-class thing; they prefer conformity. They're embarrassed by the magic stuff. Harry's not 'super-rich', but he is comfortable (estimates are that he did inherit a million, but there's plenty wizards with a great deal more). Actually, it was overhearing the red-headed family use the term 'muggle' that cued Harry that he needed to follow them. Note: If you have any grasp of Latin, it will help you with the incantations; most of them incorporate Latin. There is actually historical precedent for this. The criteria used by the Sorting Hat for determining House placement is the individual student's core values; the Hat matches them with the House's core values. It's not character or talents or interests or any other traits, just the core values. For instance, one would think Hermione would be placed in Ravenclaw because they're intellectual, but Hermione values bravery and friendship (loyalty), which aligns her with Gryffindor. Slytherin is not a 'bad' House, it's just that Slytherin core values have to do with ambition and successful results. They would be most likely to utilize situational ethics. The mistake among too many Slytherins is that short-term success can have long-term costs; the best success takes into consideration how decisions can close off options. There are great and good wizards who were in Slytherin House just as there are bad ones from the other Houses. The problem is that Slytherin core values can lead to poor decisions if made without wisdom and foresight. The Gryffindor password was "Caput Draconis"; Latin for 'head of the dragon'. There's a difference in the biology of muggles (not a slur, just a term) from wizards/witches (male/female terminology, much like boy/girl or man/woman). Using magic is basically the channeling of a vital force, and that vital force has effects on the channeler's physical body. -Resilience: Wizard/witch bodies can handle physical trauma with less damage resulting. Bones and organs require greater force to effect injury, and healing is quicker with no scarring left to mark the injury. Longbottom's broken wrist will mend in a short time and be good as new. So, injuries at Hogwarts are no big deal, just a temporary nuisance. -Resistance: There are far fewer pathogens that can infect a wizard/witch, so no colds or flu, just amazingly good health. That said, there are a few wizard/witch specific germs that can prove problematic or even fatal. Research goes on in the Wizarding World to find charms and potions that can fight these pathogens. -Longevity: Muggles have an average lifespan of about 75 years; the average lifespan of a wizard/witch is about twice that, about 150 years. -Magic-Based Injuries: Ordinary physical trauma is blunted by the channeling of the natural vital force of magic energy, but injuries CAUSED by magic is permanent and can be brutal or fatal. There is no easy healing from it and can result in scarring or loss of body parts. Already you see Harry carrying a scar on his forehead; he may have survived a Death Curse, but he still bears the scar. Anytime you see a character with scars or physical damage, it is the result of magic-caused injury. -Cultural Attitudes About Risk: Because the ramifications of risky actions are so minimal, there is cultural cachet in engaging in risky behavior and/or dangerous activities and vocations. Likely the need to be extremely aware, on your toes, and in possessions of a great many details also adds to a desire to put one's wits to the test, to prove oneself. Magic is unpredictable; it requires you maintain awareness. It's also possible that channeling magic enhances wizard/witch reflexes. Actually, Ron got the syllable emphasis correct, but he mispronounced the last syllable: Ron: LevioSAR, Hermione: LevioSA. The accent misled you. All students on the first day of school are the same year age. First Years are 11, Second Years are 12, Third Years are 13, and so on. Any time after the first day they may have a birthday and move up a year in age, but they complete the grade they started on the first day of school. Harry's 11 as a First Year in this film; his birthday is July 31st. (Film 1 = 11yrs = 1st Yr; Film 2 = 12yrs = 2nd Yr; and so on.) The final year of school is at 17 as a Seventh Year. Also, 17 is the age of adulthood in the Wizarding World, when they have legal rights to be independent and self-determinative and when they are legally responsible and accountable for their actions and decisions. Most will turn 17 before the first day of their final year and they have the right to decide whether they want to quit school, but the vast majority do complete their education. They can begin their vocations while still in school if they like, and many do. The story around Hagrid is more complicated than you know at the moment. He has some...deficits...that were mentioned and demonstrated in passing (bad spelling on Harry's cake, unable to spell a challenging name like 'Voldemort'). Hagrid can channel magic, but.... He's too simple a soul to keep other people's secrets (but good at keeping his own, usually). It's not carelessness, it's disability. "The Sorcerer's Stone" is the American title of the book and film; everywhere else in the world its title is "The Philosopher's Stone". The publishers dumbed it down for the American market because they figured Americans were unfamiliar with the historical concept of the Philosopher's Stone in alchemy and that 'sorcerer' sounded more magical than 'philosopher'. It was the goal and purpose of alchemy to produce the philosopher's stone, said to be so pure as to turn base metal (lead, tin, copper, etc) to gold, to cure all diseases (panacea), and to confer immortality. The Philosopher's Stone has been described in real world historical documents (JK Rowing did her homework) as being red and being both solid and liquid simultaneously. The film does a pretty good job at depicting these physical traits. Gryffindor winning the House Cup is not quite as unfair as it may seem. Slytherin was on its seventh consecutive win, and Draco Malfoy likely had reported the Trio out of bed to help rack up points loss, helping Slytherin House in winning. There's a magical reason that Harry has to spend time living with his aunt Petunia, apart from the Hogwarts summer break. Harry's mother invested all her love and protection into Harry just before giving up her life for him. For this protection to continue through his childhood, it needs 'recharging' by living a portion of each year with a blood relative; that means Harry's mother's sister. Without this protection, Voldemort would finish the job on Harry.

Also, I appreciate the depth of Rowling's research, which is extraordinary. She dug into history, metaphysics, mythology, psychology, culture, linguistics, and then reconciled all that into a stable alternate culture. It's quite an achievement. The fact that it results in a well-written story that periodically revises itself into more mature forms as details are revealed makes Rowling's work quite fascinating. I laughed so hard when you guys said Slytherins earned their points, because they are known for cheating, being sneaky and they're cunning. At every Quiditch game they have cheated, which is why they won the house cup 7 years in a row. In the book Hufflepuff and Ravenclaw cheered the first Gryffindor win over Slytherin. Also, they got the points not because they beat a chess game and flying keys, but because they stopped the most dangerous and feared wizard from returning and destroying wizarding and muggle world. I grew up reading these books and they are meant to grow along with the reader, same as the movies. So things will get propressively darker. I just subscribed and can't wait to watch the rest of these reactions. 😊

It's not made clear in the films, but until he's 17, Harry has to spend part of each year with the Dursleys. This is because his Aunt Petunia is his only blood relative, and spending time in her home gives his some added protection against Voldemort.

Love that more and more people are starting to watch and react to HP, so I'm excited to see you guys watch the rest of the films. Plus, you two are one of the few I've seen who actually really appreciated this movie whereas everyone kinda just brushes it off. Just to warn you, the whimsy only stays in movies 1&2, starting from 3 and on it gets progressive darker and tackles more harder topics. Basically the story ages with the "Golden Trio" (Harry, Ron, & Hermoine) and it does a great job!

The last time I was in Scotland, I rode the train used for Hogwart's Express. It is actually called The Jacobite and it takes you and a day trip to the coast. Along the way, it stops at the little station used in the movie. I also visited Alnwick Castle North of England that is used for many of the outdoor Hogwart's scenes.

Slytherin wins the house cup for years mostly because Snape never take points from Slytherin students even when they break a rule. He just ignore them. But he never miss a chance to take points from other house students when they do something, even for a silly mistake. Unlike McGonagall who take points from her own house when they break the rule. This the first time Gryffindor wins the house cup after a very longs time, u can see how other two houses are also happy for Gryffindor. Dumbledore maybe showing favoritism, but those four totally deserve that extra points

So its explained in the books? But yes, the reason Petunia hates Harry is shes jealous. You see when her Sister Lily recived her letter to hogwarts, Petunia was jealous and wanted to go to the same school her sister was. So she actually wrote to Dumbledore herself saying she deserved to go to Hogwarts as well. Dumbledore's response was to politely inform her that was impossible seeing as she had NO magical abilities 😂. After that, Petunia hated Dumbledore, Lily and anything to do with wizards or the wizarding world.
