This is Simon’s sister - thank you to anyone who comments helping us out with Harry Potter lore, as we are very much normies and do not know a lot about the series really! Sorry if we mess anything up. Also I would like to correct myself. I completely misremembered the Devil’s Snare book scene and checked after rewatching our reaction. Sorry about that! It has been almost 20 years now since the book was read to me.

Ron's biggest talent is being street smart. Hermione knows a lot because she reads a lot, but Ron grew up among wizards and therefore knows about culture, laws, day-to-day use of magic, politics, etc. There are a lot of times when Hermione doesn't know what to do and Ron's like "oh we could use this spell my mom uses to cut vegetables" or something like that haha

The decision to change the name to "Sorcerer's Stone" was made by marketing, as they wanted kids to know it was a book about magic.

Basically, Harry's mother dying for him created some kind of magical protection. It sounds cheesy when Dumbledore says "it was love" that did it, but Dumbledore says countless times, in the books, that love is the strongest force there is and he *means* it.

To be a ghost in Harry Potter, you have to chose to stay instead of crossing over , but my understanding is you only get one chance to move on to the afterlife . If you refuse you're stuck here for eternity so people very rarely chose to become ghosts . They have to be extremely scared of crossing over , which I think was the case with Nearly Headless Nick , some are held back by strong emotions like bitterness , like Moaning Myrtle who chose to stay at Hogwarts to haunt the girl who bullied her , or guilt for things the did in life which was the case with the Bloody Barron.

24:40 It was even stranger for me as a kid, growing up in Australia, since the school year here roughly lines up with the calendar year (due to the seasons being switched). I didn't know, at the time, that the northern school year starts in September, so I always thought they skipped basically the whole school year for some reason.

In the book the sorting hat took awhile deciding whether to put Hermione in Gryffindor or Ravenclaw and finally settled on Gryffindor as the best fit for her. The scene with Neville and the broom was a lot less drawn out in the book. It rose high up in the air and Neville fell off and broke his wrist before Madam Hooch could do anything. It didn't fly all over like in the movie. The kids don't automatically think of using their wands because they only know about 2 spells when they face the troll in the bathroom. Hermione probably knew more but she tends to freeze or panic in situations like that. It's one of her biggest flaws in the books. They should have just put the Nimbus 2000 in a bix like it was in the book if they were going to use those lines from the book. It would make more sense for Harry to wonder what it was if it wasn't so obviously a broom. Dumbledore had borrowed the invisibility cloak from Harry's dad before Harry's parents died so he's the one who gave it to Harry. In the book Harry's touch burned Quirrell but it didn't make him crumble. Harry hung on to keep him blinded with pain even though he was in pain himself until Dumbledore arrived. Harry didn't kill Quirrell. Voldemort did when he abandoned Quirrell's severely weakened body.

I know this is a month old, but I wanted to chime in a bit. Yes, the first years are the ones that arrive by boat. Slytherin isn't bad. They are ambitious and are willing to "Do what it takes" to get what they want. The books and movies rarely show any good Slytherins though. So it's VERY easy to assume they are all nasty dark magic users. They run from Mrs. Norris because she and Filch have a strong "Mysterious" connection and she often alerts to the caretaker about students doing or being were they are not supposed to be. They changed the title of the book because they didn't think American children would associate a philosopher with magic. And it would sound like a boring title. Yes they have other roommates but remember it was Christmas break and most of the school was empty.

I see a lot of viewers stumble over this; not quite sure if you were doing so too. "Privet" is a type shrub that is normally trimmed in long rectangular shapes to form a hedge. They're super common. So living on a street named "Privet" is a way of saying it's a common, humble, everyday sort of neighborhood. "Albus," BTW, means "bright" or "white," like in albino or Alps. A decent followup to Harry Potter, in a completely different genre, is "Die Hard."

there are good Slytherins. the line was "there is not a witch or wizard that went bad that was not in Slytherin" so, all bad wizard are in Slytherin not all Slytherins are bad wizard. the movies should have done better explaining the traits that exemplify the houses. all the houses have positive traits. Gryffindor - Bravery, helping others, and chivalry. Hufflepuff - Hard work, patience, loyalty, and fair play. Ravenclaw - Intelligence, knowledge, planning ahead, and wit. Slytherin - Ambition, cunning, heritage, and resourcefulness.

People sometimes get a little confused by the mix of reality and exaggeration in the films, but it is very reminiscent of classic live action children's movies like "Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory" (1971), "Chitty Chitty Bang Bang," "Mary Poppins," children's cartoons, and so on, which Rowling would doubtlessly have seen when she was a child. So while the Dursleys seem like cruel jackasses, they are comically so, and it is to be taken that way.
@erikperhs_ Жыл бұрын
Slytherins are not bad, they're just ambitious and value power above almost everything. This means they have the best grades (Slytherin had been winning the House Cup for the last 10 years before Harry got to Hogwarts), but also the biggest amount of Dark Wizards. Morals are limiting and as Voldemort says, "there's only power and those who are too weak to get it". There's also a discussion in the fandom about how much of it is just because of how people treat the Slytherin kids. They have always had this fame of being bad, so people already expect the worst from them. That's similar to what happens to marginalized groups in real life. It's hard to be good when everyone is telling you you're inherently bad.
@suzanne6005 Жыл бұрын
If I recall you got the number slightly wrong. Slytherin won the House Cup 6 times before Harry arrived. Nowhere in the books does it say 10 winnings. I've read up to and beyond that point.
@LuisGarcia-703 Жыл бұрын
I don't know that they necessarily have the best grades. There are other ways to gain and lose points besides doing good in class, like behavior, Quidditch, etc.
@nirppa100 Жыл бұрын
Then there is the fact that Snape takes points from anyone who isn't Slytherin for breathing too much. While Crabbe and Goyle propably get good grades despite being the dumbest of them all.

People become ghosts when they're too afraid of dying. At least that's how they explain it in the books.
@adventuresinlaurenland Жыл бұрын
That's not at all how it's explained in the books. Ghosts are the imprints of witches and wizards who have died and left a part of themselves behind. Only those who are magical can return as ghosts (meaning Muggles can’t become one). However, even though all witches and wizards have the ability to come back as a ghost, those who are smart, don’t. It is said that those who do return have unfinished business of some sort. There are lots of reasons for this such as regret, fear or guilt. Some ghosts are those with a very strong attachment to the material world who refuse to move on.

Ron is in all these movies castrated from his true character he is more like us average and learning but loyal and faithful. Not true smart and not true heroic. But more middle of it all. Of both, in the chess he wasnt Riding the Knight, he WAS the knight, same as Devil Snare he didnt panic in it, Hermione does. Ron tells her are you a witch or not? She like oh yea! She was like where is the wood for a fire. IN each movie they basically castrate Ron make him a complete idiot. Though he has maybe the most flaws, but their usually about his lack of confidence in himself. He dont feel good looking or good due to his large poor family, not to mention he hates Maroon which his mom ignores his hate or cornbeef sandwiches like in the begining of the movie. In the books also Hermione isnt that attractive, she is what i call and better look for her buckteeth etc and bushy hair which i perfer her as look t han the movie version. The books are better so if not read them well................ missing out on alot of character build up and really experience the true characters in more depth and yes there is many more in their dormitory. They got Neville, Dean Thomas the kid that blows stuff up Seamus.

ps the points not really messed up. If one did read book or notice Snape for instance. He takes away points for no real good reason. The reasons are justified to me for Syltherin house gets tons of points usually by Snape though never said out loud by him, but it seems they get favoritism alot he takes points from Gryiffindor house alot. For no reasons at all. In the books Snape even destroyed Harrys potion said oops ... it got spilled i guss 0 for you today Mr. Potttah. They won the house cup for 7 years i feel by cheat due to Snapes biased. Though no real claims to it but it is said many times he does favorite them. So who knows. But to me its justified they did risk their life to save the stone even if was safe the whole time. They did risk their life and was trying to do good. So .... i say its Justified.
