As far as I know the division between houses is born from the 4 founders, because each of them sought to dedicate him/herself to those students that showed traits that the single fuonder thought to be the mark of a great wizard or witch. For Godric it was bravery, for Raveclaw it was academic knowledge, for Hufflepuff it was loyalty, and for Salazar ambition and cunningness. When the founders were no more the Hat (enchanted by Griffindor since it was his own hat) was put under a spell to select each student for the house according to the very tastes of the original founders Just wabted to throw some lore in the mix, I liked the video I had no ulterior motive P.S. Actually, it lied more in what Salazar Slytherin wanted and how that heavily contrasted with his fellow founders, particularly Godric Gryffindor. Salazar Slytherin refused to teach muggleborns and this would eventually blow up into a fight that would cause him to leave the school. @suburbanbanshee Жыл бұрын
"Boy, the Gryffs are dim this year... Better put a smart one in."
@Deathisdark05 Жыл бұрын
The best argument I've seen to explain this is that it appears that the sorting hat takes into account where the students want to go and there is canon evidence for this. Hermione admits that she effectively got into an argument with the hat about being put into Gryffindor instead of Ravenclaw, meaning it likely placed her there because she was so ardently against being placed in Gryffindor. We see something similar happen with Harry. He's told he technically has traits of all four houses, but that it appears as though he'd suit Slytherin well. It's only when he protests and stays stubborn on it that the hat places him in Gryffindor. This likely means that the hat considers what people are like, but if a student clearly doesn't want to go somewhere they won't. It also explains a few things, such as how so many pureblood families tend to go into Slytherin. Realistically, not all of their children are likely suited for it (Crabb and Goyle seem like the best example), but there is a systemic desire to go there because they will be disowned if they do not.
@Toliman. Жыл бұрын
@@Deathisdark05 The key point about a sentient hat, is that it's had the experience to know what the downsides of manipulating large groups of people and children are. Which perhaps is only if it could observe the potential future of that person, or it has access to people's memories in their later lives, or some other access to memory/knowledge. It's a one-shot deal for a 'sorting hat', so the mechanics are going to be elusive, unless there's a schema or framework it relies on. Either the Hat is working against the children's interests, which is the most likely outcome, the houses are there to contain negative or counter-productive emotions, not to embellish positive emotions. Which is likely why there's a symbolic "positive" spin on the houses, when the reality is more likely that the houses contain various troublemakers of different neurotic dispositions, conditions that would lead to arrogance or dependency on others, etc. And, given how long wizards are likely to live, they evolved the concept of the houses based on the type of teaching methods, and the temperament of the teachers. Especially because the necessity to protect wizards from the outside, also includes protecting wizards from their own habits and beliefs, and also their parents (sic). Teachers that saw their own flaws and wanted to help those children especially. So the Hat is possibly an amalgamation of various 'shadows' of teachers that were housemasters in the past. Which is possibly why the hat has a split personality or debates among itself to determine the better outcome. It's not to gather people with traits, it's to shelter them from their own problems, or the potential faultlines of parents who don't really have their children's interests. Only their own interests. If the hat was human, i.e. somewhat like the paintings, a remnant soul captured via exposure to older and wiser minds, Then the 'schema' isn't based on children's capacity, it's based on performance and attributes that aren't determined by personality. This would perhaps also mean that the Hat, sorts Teachers and sorts Adults and/or Refugees in the past, people who learned to be wizards and witches who didn't attend the school as children. It would be based on the neuroses and faults, fears, opportunities and perceptions of the world in which the Hat, as a 'shadow' of a wizened/elderly teacher, would recognise the ambition or restraint, fears, loves and other subconscious traumas that would prevent them from working with other children, etc. unless they were nurtured or exposed to their trauma / outcome in advance. So it's not that Hermione is a Ravenclaw by nature, it's that Gryffindor is more likely a house for traumatised children, while Slytherin is more of a containment/bucket of crabs house, attempting to peel the shine/pride from potential conflicts, i.e. bullied children who don't have the perspective of friendship or seek power over others to compensate. Ravenclaw and Hufflepuff could be equally restorative, i.e. finding a home for the homeless/unique, and in the case of hufflepuff, perhaps there's a void that power or personality cannot fulfill, i.e. expectations of family, shame, ambitionless, or manipulative parents, sic. Which is sort of remediating or obfuscating the point. If the Hat can read the future, or extrapolate personality into a potential, then it's a sort of authorial voice, not a semantic or logical voice. And, it's only the juxtaposition of having to explain what the author has done, which is going to create anomalies or excess concerns. If it were based on the persona of teachers of the past, housemasters, sic. that would/should be the excuse given.

Man this was painful First magical persecution from non magical people is why wizards don't don't inherently mix. I think people often misunderstand what the houses and sorting into them is about. It's not that you simply have certain qualities. Like you say, most people have various qualities that would sort them into more than one house. It's what that person values most. That's why when Harry practically begs NOT to be put into Slytherin, the hat takes that into account. It's why every Weasley ends up in Gryffindor, because it's strongly influenced by what they value as a family. It's why Hermione is in Gryffindor and not Ravenclaw. Though they skip over or change a lot of her actions in the movies, so you don't see that side of her as much as the "brainy" side. Slytherin does have a point about heredity, because the ability to use magic is hereditary. There are some exceptions, sometimes muggles can have magical children or magical parents can have muggle children, but that is the exception. There is probably also a correlation between strong magical abilities in parents and in children. That goes against left wing egalitarian ideology, but it seems to apply to magic and it applies to real world traits as well.
it is a good list, though one should keep in mind that what people think of with brooding and what brooding means is two different things. brooding is a sort of contemplative state, while most consider it to be a sort of anti-social emo behavior. in the books it was definitely the second one as they had their house in a dungeon. they also moved around in packs, like most of the kids, but the others tended to be on their own more than the slytherins, and they didn't mix, making them come off as more bullies than ambitious cunning sort of proud people. they didn't look to do great things with others to show how good they can be, or to play nice to convince others to do things for them, that was more of a griffindor thing. basically what they are supposed to be versus how they were portrayed is pretty different.

The idea behind the pureblood ideology is that wizards that breed with muggles dilute the magical strength of their children and over time wizards will disappear. It has some merit in that it does seem magical strength seems to be at least partially genetic but being pureblooded doesn't seem to have observable differences. Sorta a recessive gene thing maybe? Another point is that the sorting hat reads your mind and tries to place you based on where it thinks you will fit in, you can actually override and choose your house if you want and where you get placed can actually be influenced by other people in your year as it tries to social engineer people in a sorta good way.

I had the non-canon idea that one important reason for blood purity is that pureblood families seem not to ever produce squibs. Squibs can be a source of tremendous shame and trouble, both for the squib himself and for the wizard family overall. That might be a good reason for pureblood families to avoid marrying non-purebloods, and for considering muggle-born inherently unreliable, both due to their strong muggle family ties and the doubtful magical potential of their offspring. It wouldn't matter how smart a muggle-born like Hermione was; her social and family ties, and possibly her own kids would divide her loyalties.

Wizards had ill-will against muggles because of the witch trials and world wars that threatened wizard kind in Potter lore. The Malfoy family moved for that reason, and it didn't stop at muggles. Blood purists also extended to the misunderstanding and mishandling of magical creatures. The Hufflepuff ghost, Fat Friar became a ghost because he was executed for magic to heal ailments. For some it was self-preservation, others it was personal or what they've been taught. That's why Hogwarts, Ilvormony, Durmstrang, and Bouxbaton schools of wizardry are cloaked and warded. A muggleborn's parents can go through the barrier between platforms to see their children off on the Hogwarts Express and visit Diagon Alley, as seen with Hermione's parents. If a muggleborn's name is written by the Quill of Acceptance and Book of Admittance, a school representative, preferably a professor will visit and inform them they've been selected to study. Ilvormony's sorting into houses is better than the hat, in my opinion. Pukwugie, Horned Serpent, Thunderbird, and Wampus. When the Horned Serpent chooses you, the gem on its head will glow. Thunderbird beats its wings. Pukwugie points its arrow at you, wampus roars. If all statues react, the student chooses. The founding of the American school is probably my favorite storyline in Potter lore.
