I had both philosophers Stone and Chamber of Secrets for GBC and to this day those games are still some of my favorite games that i have ever played. The amount of detail that they had for a GBC game at the time was insane, you could lose yourself just exploring the outside castle looking for ingredients or spending a lot of time dueling other students in the 2nd one to upgrade spells.

I'm surprised 'GBA Prisoner' is ranked higher than 'GBC Chamber'. It's an okay game in its own right but it's missing a lot of details that made its predecessor such a charming, fun experience.
@purpleheart30002 жыл бұрын
Definitely a lot less detail. It's a hard call for me because I dearly love both, but I think it comes down to whether you like rpg or free turn fights. Bit like comparing apples to oranges, and I don't know if I could choose one as better.
@fictionalmediabully98302 жыл бұрын
@@purpleheart3000 Even the battles themselves have design flaws not present before. It's not clear how Petrificus Totalus works on enemies weak to it, and magic runs out in a flash, resulting in some clunky pacing. When I first played it, I felt mildly underwhelmed but couldn't elaborate on why. That is until I watched a video by Farlands Design Den and it all began to make sense. I should reiterate it's a perfectly fine game. If anything, it's a miracle it turned out satisfactory considering its unpleasant development cycle.
@goranisacson25022 жыл бұрын
@@fictionalmediabully9830 Huh, did GBA Prisoner go through development hell? Did not know that. But I presume it's along the lines of "you have to develop this game along the same time-frame as the previous games but for more advanced hardware, with shinier graphics and we're not gonna give you more money to help make that process any easier"?
@fictionalmediabully98302 жыл бұрын
@@goranisacson2502 There's an old internet forum about the Harry Potter Game Boy RPGs, and someone by the name of Dreamwriter was a staff member who worked at Griptonite Games. According to the developer, making 1 and 2 for GBC was one of the best times making games but was quickly followed by the worst time making games, which was 3 on GBA. When asked why developing 3 on GBA was the opposite, the response was this. (- We were micromanaged to death by the publisher on that one. They specifically asked for the GBC Potter team to make that game, and we designed our dream game, taking everything we learned from Chamber of Secrets and amping it way up, taking full advantage of the powerful new hardware. To be honest, we over-designed it, to be sure, but still, without interference we could have made a really kick-ass game. But the publisher didn't trust us to make quality GBA art, seeing as we had come from GBC development. To make a long story short, halfway through production they made us throwaway all the existing background art, replacing it with a new style they came up with, and because the background art changed, we had to change our sprite art to match, and now all the scripting had to be redone, since backgrounds and characters were different sizes/shapes from before. With only half the time to now make a full game, we had to cut many, many features, and to release it as a decent game we had to work crunch mode for the rest of the project, including weekends and holidays, while the publisher had reps in our office micromanaging it all. Not fun. -) On the whole, it's disappointing the team weren't able to fully realise a role-playing Prisoner of Azkaban game. I know a lot of fans like to say EA treated Harry Potter games better in its early years but the reality is Harry Potter games since the beginning have always been made to be cash grabs. Fans should be grateful that the Chamber of Secrets story was derivative of its predecessor because that meant developers only had to iterate on the Philosopher's Stone game and call it a day. Starting with Prisoner of Azkaban, it was becoming obvious EA was more concerned about making a profit than creating a quality game, and it became especially apparent once Goblet of Fire came out and the game series started going through significant gameplay shifts, which is absolute hell for developers trying to meet a tight deadline. A shame but it is what it is.
@goji37552 жыл бұрын
I definitely prefer GBC Chamber to GBA Azkaban. Azkaban's leveling feels less grindy and the combat has fewer difficulty spikes, but Chamber feels more fleshed out overall, and the minigames are more fun. It also really bothers me there's no real sense of time passing in Azkaban, with many events that should be happening days, weeks or even months apart seeming to happen within hours or even minutes of each other on the same day. Chamber definitely helped you get a sense for time marching along as the events unfold, in no small part due to the charming little the hourglass, sun/moon and calendar page transitions between chapters. GBC Chamber feels like a full school year, GBA Azkaban feels like a very eventful weekend. Reading the dev's account of the development on the two games, it's little wonder why Chamber feels like the superior title. It absolutely sucks anytime the big wigs step in and force you to change basically everything halfway through your allotted development time.

You know, I just noticed that the only Harry Potter games I've played were the Griptonite Trilogy - Sorcerer's Stone and Chamber of Secrets on the GBC and Prisoner of Azkaban on the GBA, and it's quite heartwarming to see them taking the top slots on this list. I agree with the #1 spot going to PoA gba, the combat is much more balanced and leveling up is far less grindy, using spells to interact with the environment is a fun addition and the overall world design and artstyle makes for a fine presentation, balancing the movie character designs and aesthetic with just enough artistic flare to make good use of the GBA's limited graphical capabilities. Personally, though, I PREFER Chamber of Secrets GBC to Prisoner of Azkaban GBA. PoA was good, sure, but I always got a weird sense of time compression while playing it, like the story was severely stripped down in a way that makes it seem like events that should have been happening days, weeks or even months apart are all taking place on the same day, and the minigames were disappointingly few in number and rather uninteresting compared to what Griptonite gave us with CoS. Chamber of Secrets definitely feels much longer in a good way, like it's more fleshed out, and you get a better sense of the school year passing by with hourglass, sun/moon and even calendar page transitions between scenes, as well as certain rooms of the castle being decked out for Christmas and Valentines Day which I always thought was a nice touch. And it sports a wider variety of minigames which are always a fun diversion for when you need a break from the level grind.

Your series had me going back and seeking out the console Harry Potter games I missed as a kid but always wanted to try out. I grew up on the GBA games (1,2, and 4 specifically but later played 3 via emulation) and liked Chamber of Secrets the most but I did like a lot of what I played in Sorcerer's Stone. I also liked the fact that you could get a reaction from people when casting spells on them in HP1 and the castle was much more populated and had a better layout than the simple tower design of the other games. Chamber of Secrets had the music, the graphics, the dungeons that were short/sweet, and the overall atmosphere made it my favorite. I wasn't a big fan of Prisoner of Azkaban switching it up and turning it into an RPG like the first two on GBC - seemed a bit backwards to me.

Look, I understand why people would prefer GBA Prisoner to GBC Chamber, I really do. The GBA has greater graphical capabilities than the GBC, and it does take advantage of it. The character sprites are nicely detailed, the Mode 7 battle screen is cool, and like every other version of Prisoner, it brings the aesthetic closer to the movies than ever before. And the latter point is kind of my issue with it. GBC Chamber and Philosopher were odd and trippy, but they had undeniably unique interpretations of Hogwarts that were packed with wacky visuals and lots of hidden surprises. There was always something to see or find, and secrets everywhere you look. You could visit rooms that we never see in the books or movies but make total sense to be there, like Muggle Art and Music classrooms! The character animations were detailed and bursting with personality, and the writing was quirky and whimsical. Harry himself got to be the Sass Master he was always meant to be since the devs were working mainly with the books; always a quip or a snark for just the right situations. These games were just so... full of life. Prisoner had almost none of this. Unique animations were far less common, for one, and the dialogue became much more direct to the point of being flat and dull. Although the maps were technically very good, I think the world design suffered severely from sticking closer to the movie version of Hogwarts. Prisoner's School has lots of empty brown hallways leading to nothing, hidden items all in plain sight in chests that randomly litter the hallways, no interesting things to see or find. Totally watered down. The graphical upgrades and overworld spell puzzles just weren't worth it to me. The magic was gone. To me, Chamber of Secrets GBC will always be not only the best handheld Potter game, but to date the best Potter game *period.* There'll never be anything like them again.

LEGO Star Wars The Video Game (I-III) was released in 2005, LEGO Star Wars The Original Trilogy (IV-VI) was released in 2006 and finally the game that united both games : The complete Saga was released in 2007. LEGO Star Wars The Video Game was their first game in that style and lead to their massive success to what we know today. I remember back in 2004 the announcement in the LEGO magazine was so hype. I think the reason PSP goblet is so low is precisely *because* it's almost a 1:1 port of the console version with downgraded graphics. With most of the other games, you're getting a mostly unique game in a different genre from the console equivalent console game, so if you like that genre more, you can skip the console game and go for the handheld, or play both for two unique experiences. There's no reason to play PSP goblet over the console version, other than portability or if you only have a PSP.

The gameboy game does a great job at creating the same atmosphere and gameplay style as the PC version. When I recently played it, I felt nostalgic even though I never played the game prior. It was like playing my childhood game for the first time again. I do get the ranking though. The RPG style of the Gameboy Color and prisoner of Azkaban for the GBA is quite a lot of fun. The only thing that annoys me is the first game on the GBA ranking equally to CoS. That game was terribly unforgiving and falling through minute gaps (even though your clearly should not have), having to redo the entire level was frustrating to say the least.

Harry Potter makes a surprisingly good turned based RPG

Harry Potter (or a Harry Potter world) type game would be great nowadays. You wouldn't to limit it to Year 1 and it could be fantastic if the right developer got a hold of it

Did you not hear about Hogwarts Legacy? It was announced quite a while ago.

The GBC and GBA games were fantastic. Super fond memories of those when I was young, and again years later through emulators. Definitely best trilogy of games that I can recall with each one better than the one before. Those three are still my favorite Harry Potter games to date.

As a child, I played 7 versions of the first 5 Harry Potter games: Philosophers Stone for PC, Chamber of Secrets for PC, Prisoner of Azkaban for Xbox, PC and Gameboy Advance, Goblet of Fire for PC and Gameboy Advance and Order of Phoenix for PC. Whilst I loved playing them, some of them... are not as great as the others. The first two PC games are a perfect couple, love them to pieces, along with the GBA version of Prisoner of Azkaban, being that its the first game I ever played I do rank it highly for this.

omg, i met my best friend while playing the GBC version of philosophers stone when it came out. We used to play it between classes and after school all the time. Holy shit, i'm getting old.

Although Flandrew's video is superb as always, I feel like the ratings really do shaft the games on the less popular systems. Like, Harry Potter & the Order of the Phoenix on PSP was legit a good game, way better than the DS game. Just fewer people played it because, you know, PSP wasn't as popular as DS. Also Goblet of Fire on PSP, while a low point of the series, it was actually a perfect port. The dragon level and the underwater level were standout moments that actually kinda wowed me as it was my first game experience on the PSP alongside Pursuit Force.

Harry Potter: Quiddich World Cup was a great game on gameboy as well, I wonder where it would’ve ranked amongst these games

I loved the GBC Chamber of Secrets, but I went through 5 different copies of the game for failing batteries which would delete my save. Eventually the store stopped replacing my game and I never got to finish it.

This reminds me. I recently the PC version of A Series of Unfortunate Events. And guess what? It was made by our good old friends at KnowWonder. I even saw Chris Vuchetich's name in the credits. If I'm not mistaken, it was made around the same time as PoA and used the same engine and similar elements. I think you should check it and the other ASoUE games.

I only played 1 as a kid, and even seeing gameplay, for the life of me, I can't remember which one it was. It had to be one of the first two books on the GBA or color, but neither's gameplay gives me a feel of playing it before.
