It's good, but not perfect IMHO. HP1 PS1 ranked above HP2 PS1 is a joke, and HP1 on PC being on A is an overstatement, since this game was an experiment and pretty rushed, virtually no open world, rushed story etc.... Order of Phoenix should be higher than just B grade, it should be at least on A! The rest of the rankings is okay!
@Sebulba20002 жыл бұрын
Honestly, Chamber of Secrets and Philosopher's Stone for PS2 are probably one of my least favorite HP games, mainly because of awkward controls, too much stealth, repetetiveness and overally, the PC and even the PS1 versions (which I adore) felt more dynamic and responsive to play. Sure, the PS2 games look great, but that's the only thing I can give the games credit for to be honest

Over time, what made me feel disenchanted with continuing to play HP games was that after game 3, the games became more like the aesthetics of the movies and not the books, with that atmosphere of a magical and cartoon world independent of the movies. I abandoned the HP games after "Goblet" and I have only the trilogy as my favorites.
@izaaak2812 жыл бұрын
So true. Style is extremely important, Harry Potter is supposed to be a magical Wonderland, with magical colors and unique character designs. After said game it got more bland and too realistic colors/lighting plus they became "movie copies" i personally feel. The games should give their own witty interpretation of the books if you ask me. The new game that's coming looks fantastic though, it manages to be realistic but also magical and vibrant from what I've seen.

Goblet was a flop for sure. I remember as a kid thinking "Is it just me, or does this game actually kinda suck compared to the first 3?" Then this year I looked up these games on the internet and felt vindicated learning that everyone else hated Goblet as well.
@Foxxionly Жыл бұрын
@@cubedmelons876 definitely wasn't just you, I felt pretty much the same. As much as yet another 3D adventure game reusing the same formula as the first three games would seem quite boring, the Goblet of Fire seemed like something too much different and I have not even played anything past 'the trilogy'.
@FiksIIanzO23 сағат бұрын
Yeah, Goblet sucks, but I have very fond memories of exploring the movie Hogwarts in the OoF game. While it's definitely significantly less whimsical than the first trilogy, and if you're playing them for the atmosphere you're definitely not gonna like it, the recreation of Hogwarts in that game felt incredibly faithful to the movies and was _so_ much fun to crawl through. I'd recommend at least trying it

Chamber of secrets was absolutely stunning. I was in 6th grade and played it every day for a year. I remember how beautiful the castle was, the spells, the game wasn’t too hard but you also required you use all the acquired skills and spells as you learned more and more. I’ll never forget flying in quidditch. It was very beautifully design, immersive, a bit spooky, Al while still being true to the movie. The forest levels with the spiders still haunts me to this day. I look back on it as one of my favorite games of all time. EA got it right with CoS for the consoles and PC. PC looks much better, yes, but I’ve always been a console kid.

The best handheld Harry Potter game is Chamber of Secrets on Game Boy Color. I just appreciate that the developers even had the idea to turn Harry Potter into a turn-based RPG and they pulled it off excellently. Philosopher’s Stone on GBC was also great but CoS improved all of its flaws, such as multiple party members. The sprite work is lovely and the layout of Hogwarts is imaginative and a joy to explore. I always loved the shortcuts in the castles and all the hidden item cubbyholes. On the other hand, the worst handheld games are the DS ones, they completely loose all of the charm that the GBC games have.

I agree with you, they're great RPGs. I would dare to say Chamber of Secrets (GBC) is better than its sequel Prisoner of Azkaban (GBA). Prisoner of Azkaban may have better graphics but the artistic design feels worse: too blurry, without the charm of pixelart. Hogwarts has a worse design and the puzzles felt cheap for me, almost a waste of time (far from Golden Sun or Mario & Luigi). I couldn't finish it.

The only potential issue with this ranking is that people only voted for their favorite. So while the top ranked games are basically untouched, the games further down the list may have moved some positions based on the second, third, fourth, etc votes of the 60+% of people who voted for ones further up the list. Furthermore since the top two games were so close, the second or third favorite votes of other voters may have flipped their rankings. Either way this is an interesting list and reflects pretty well what I would have expected.

I am pretty happy yet surprised my favourite and pick got first place, especially since my friends who grew up with Harry Potter mostly preferred the Prisoner of Azkaban PC game. Yet greatest of all is that I see my love for the first three games, the 'OG trilogy', reflected by the community. I always thought that the games getting duller and less interesting had to do with me growing up, but your videos over the past few months have shown me that these games were just a reflection of the dark road EA was going down on over the years, rather than me growing up. I am looking forward to the handheld rankings, as well as what your future video projects will bring us!

Yeah, as much as I love the Prisoner of Azkaban PC, that game is a downgrade to the Chamber of Secrets PC. My main problem is the length and a bigger castle that feels more hollow, because of some floors being straight up empty. Also, I really don't like, that spells are not being used apart from classrooms (in 90% of cases). In the Chamber of Secrets you had all those Spongify plates or Diffindo spider webs everywhere around Hogwarts and discovering new secrets with new learnt spells felt really satisfying. In the PoA, you can basically get all the secrets right away and it ruins all the charm. Although, the portrait passwords were a neat idea. Shame, it's like they did not have enough time for the production. It's weird, because they had an extra year, but then again, they were also working on a Brother Bear game, which came out in 2003, so that may be the reason

As far as the handheld games go, I can personally say without a doubt that the gameboy color version of the Chamber of Secrets has to be the greatest out of the lot. It's predecessor should also be worthy of mentioning, but Chamber of Secrets took what the Sorcerer's Stone had before and improved on it in every conceivable way. For GBC standards, these games are hidden gems to many as they were loyal to both the films and books respectively in their narrative and gameplay. Having an entertaining and immersive Harry Potter RPG game on a handheld device was way ahead of its standards at the time. I may be a little biased as I mostly played these games for the nostalgia. I however feel that there's more of a reason as to why I seem to go and do another play though of each every now and then as I have for nearly 20 years. The faithful storytelling, colorful spells (that you can upgrade), and a soundtrack that would make you believe the John Williams himself would have been responsible should he have ever had a career in composing the scores in early handheld gaming. In sum, I'm casting my vote for the GBC adaptation for the Chamber of Secrets. I enjoyed the Sorcerer's Stone for GBC thoroughly, but I'd give a slight edge over to its sequel as it improved on everything on a technical scale and also featured a party-based feature so Harry wouldn't always have to fight solo. The Chamber of Secrets was also the final game ever released for GBC, and I feel it should get the recognition it deserves. If possible, I would implore anyone reading this to play the GBC adaptations or at least look at videos on them before casting their vote. Hope this helps in your next video Flandrew.

I never had the chance to play any of the games when they came out, but I did recently play the GBC games and the POA GBA game online. POA and COS were both enjoyable. I appreciated the upgrades each game made to the previous ones. Chamber of Secrets for GBC had an amazing soundtrack, and every improvement from the first GBC game was greatly appreciated. The Prisoner of Azkaban GBA game had a bit of a cleaner overworld; I loved switching characters to use different spells and locating special items in chests (Because running into objects and pressing A gets a little tedious). I also liked the upgrade to the castle; the spiraling stairs were a nice touch. And I appreciated not having to guess what monster I was about to run into after I’d identified them. Honestly, although I listed a bunch of positives from POA it’s hard to say which of these is my favorite since they both had their charms. Unfortunately, I stopped playing Philosopher’s Stone GBC as soon as I ran into the potions class glitch. I was just too angry and dispirited to go through everything again after my last save, lol.

Happy to see PC Chamber of Secrets on top, it'll always be my favorite. Also enjoyed HP1 on PC and both 1 and 2 on PS1, but PC COS takes the cake for me. Thanks for this video.

I don't ever comment on anything on youtube. Really have to say I have loved watching your videos, especially the ones comparing games. I have had issues sleeping due to life stresses and its been something entertaining and calm to me that helps me relax at night when I try to get ready to sleep. Thank you for all the work!

Great Video. I loved the earlier games on PS2 and PC as a kid. I just wish Microsoft didn’t make it so difficult to play older Harry Potter games on Newer PC’s now :(

Love your version comparison vids, including the ones for other franchises! This is really the only sort of Harry Potter content I'll consume anymore, stuff about the old games. Couldn't be paid to touch Hogwarts Whatever that's coming out. In the immortal words of Roger Clark / Arthur Morgan: _"TERFs ain't got no friends!"_ Thanks, FLANDEW!

And considering that game SEEMS, at least from previews, to revolve around beating down a house-elf / goblin rebellion... I don't think we'll be missing out on much either.
@chompythebeast2 жыл бұрын
@@goranisacson2502 Wow. If that's true, then I don't wanna hear another soul try to argue _"Don't punish the game devs for something someone else said!"_ They're already paid for their labor, if they're not it's their employer's fault for being withholding, not mine, and if _that's_ what they made, then they _deserve_ to lose out
@goranisacson25022 жыл бұрын
@@chompythebeast And just in case you hadn't been keeping up with stuff around that game (which I don't blame you if you haven't, I'm just remembering some people might not be as irrationally online as me to keep track of this stuff): the former lead designer for the game, Troy Leavitt, had or still has a youtube channel where he boosts Gamergate and rails against Anita Sarkeesian. Granted, he then resigned from the project in March 2021 when people investigated his youtube channel, and the articles I found back then do not mention if he was lead dev in a coding manner or a story-writing manner, but they do say management tried to prevent them from including trans-options when designing your character (yet it is apparently being included in the final game), so I can't swear on what influence he might have had... but it certainly adds up to deflate what enthusiasm one MIGHT have had for the game even more. Also, went and double-checked the info on the plot on the Harry Potter wiki. The two revealed villains so far is a Goblin who is trying to instigate a rebellion agaknst human wizards, and a human wizard who apparently backs his efforts from the shadows, so house elves are not involved in the rebellion from what I can tell. If they turn out to be involved later on, or if it turns out the Dark wizard is just instigating the rebellion and the Goblin is just his pawn and the whole rebellion isn't REAL and it's just faked by the human... well, that's for the people who'll actually play the game to find out.

I completed every Harry Potter games on PC twice or more. And what I love is that P'stone was a linear game where you can't go back to previous levels to collect the wizards' cards while TOC was an open world game where you can walk around Hogwarts collecting beans to buy wizards' cards from your school mates. I can see why the PC version of TOC is the 1st game because it was such a great improvement from P'stone for PC gamers. (i didn't like POA as I feet dizzy while playing it and the levels are kinda annoying)

Oh no I voted for the wrong one! I grew up playing the PC ones and thought PoA had the bean bonus room (or the beanus bone room as we used to call it as kids)! I'm glad CoS won, it was the one my sister and I played most and we loved it, although we printed off a 50 page walkthrough that I still don't think my mum knows about lol

For me, GBA Prisoner of Azkaban holds a very special place in my heart. For someone who never had a console until I got a Wii, I cherished my GBA that was gifted to me by my Nan, and Prisoner of Azkaban was the game she decided to purchase with it. The music is superb, and listening to the console versions of Philosopher’s Stone and Chamber of Secrets it holds the same wonder and charm that Jeremy Soule. The style is beautiful and the exploration is great. Even the sound effects are lovely to listen to. I’ve replayed the game in one save file more times than I know! Harry and the gang are so OP they can defeat the whomping willow in their sleep lmao. Loved the video and the documentation of these games x

It fascinates me to no end that we literally dunk on the devs for reusing large portions of the assets between the old Harry Potter games, and yet the "new" Zelda TOTK reuses basically the whole world, does literally nothing to the engine and animations apart from an FSR2 implementation (which doesn't work all that well) and everybody loses their minds how "good" that game is.
@suntannedduck23887 ай бұрын
Majora did the same but tried to re- contextual as well (never played it but from what I've seen kind of makes sense even if N64 carts not the hardware issue). TOTK I got to say I didn't buy because (even if BOTW was fine but didn't do it for me in areas it was still a fair title and no I don't like open world other than Gravity Rush, Sunset Overdrive or say HUB semi open games so no I am not on the Horizon Zero Dawn/Forbidden West train at all or many other open worlds Horizon was fine but 20 hours in I understand everything it was I could access and it wasn't for me) to me the 4 tellings of the story are recycled and not put effort in by each character 's perspective for their faction let alone an order to say oh you have heard this side let me tell you more. But nope it's a repeat. The world is the same beside changes in areas or NOC helpers or other stuff. Building is fine but I mean no one played Banjo Nuts and Bolts did they? Or any other building mechanics and how awkward some can be the way TOTK does it with physics because while cool I hate build mechanics. The islands in the sky suck and Minecraft with debris in the air is better with trees or sometime a structure let alone actual games with sky islands. Why have them for no reason. They should have not added them or scaled it back. Sure on Switch 2 repeating it again, but adding more isn't worth it by that point on the new hardware I think. The caves do what they do. Quests are probably different, maybe shrines but eh. I get Spiderman does too but each games of the past not just the last 3 tried different things with New York and new areas/abilities, enemies and more from the series/license. I do think the new mechanics are cool but not full price worth it at all let alone don't all function well. Games can be quality of life tweaks but usually a new set of levels or a new map for sure to get the most out of it, and story/setting makes a difference. Switch isn't limited by N64 carts of size at all only the hardware which is a jump from Wii U but they didn't want to go well we have an open world time to scrap it. Or make a new region. The aspects of the Link Between Worlds through the terrain/sky islands is cool but use cases no idea. But that and mechanics don't go far if not much use for them to pull off. Even if part of the series to replicate for TOTK world. But I mean that's why Elder Scrolls Online exists. Beside each region. Sure it doesn't have to be an MMO but 1 title at least. But separate games and their regions exist. Zelda hasn't always been in Hyrule anyway they just don't want separate regions and go well we have games to remaster if you want those old regions and the current is the big open world with changes. Sure history 'happens' but it isn't that exciting for sure.

I remember unlocking the camera and flying around the castle in the pc, even back to privet drive. I think that was sorcerers stone, but it could've been the chamber of secrets. After twenty years, it's hard to remember, and I hardly still have those childhood pc cdroms anymore.

As a player of the Xbox and PC versions, the only HP games that I don't remember that fondly are Deathly Hallows Part 1, Sorcerer's Stone, and Qudditch World Cup. I remember generally enjoying the rest to some degree or another. My favorites would have to Chamber of Secrets on Xbox and the two Lego Harry Potter games. Runner-ups are Half-Blood Prince and CoS on PC.
