While watching your videos covering a variety of ancient artifacts (Moody's eye, the mirror, the vase, the wand, the cloak, sorcerer's stone, the DH stone, etc.) a question hit me...why have contemporary wizards become weaker than their ancestors? We are constantly told about ancient wizards who created incredible magical artifacts or did amazing things, but our own generation's greatest wizard (Dumbledore) can only create a thing that puts out lights. Even in this video, you mention how you don't believe Voldemort could create something comparable to the Deathly Hallows. And this problem seems to be a more recent problem too, because as we see in Fantastic Beasts, Queenie is a natural Legilimens, but a generation later that ability is seemingly dying off, so even a powerful wizard like Volde has to use a spell to do it, and even then he only gets flashes of thought, instead of Queenie's apparent ability to read a person's mind. Could Grindelwald and Voldemort be right? Is the mixing between muggles and wizards diluting magical abilities? Or maybe two generations of war which cost the lives of countless skillful wizards has drastically hurt the wizarding gene pool. Or could it be simply that the modern school system is too focused on test scores, and not enough on actual education. Hogwarts was created by the four founders to pass on their knowledge, but (as we are shown) the founders each created a powerful magical artifact but then did not teach their students how they were made. Even Rowena Ravenclaw who places an emphasis on knowledge (and who cheats by the way...) refuses to pass on the knowledge of her diadem. So I would like to see if the Carlin Brothers could work out this idea, why is magic dying throughout the Wizarding World?
@Zahlenteufel16 жыл бұрын
My guess is that in ye olden days there was just a lot less control over magic. Like, think before the ministery of magic put in place all the "no minor wizardry" and stuff it was all possible, basically the wild west of magic. To create such powerful artifacts would surely require massive amounts of magic and/or sacrifices (like human sacrifices). Now when you're the only wizard in a couple hundred miles range (the world population is smaller the farther you go back, therefore, the wizard population as well) you're free to fail as hard as you like and sacrifice as many villages as you like but if there is a ministry monitoring all and every magical fart then it would be a lot harder. If you fail hard enough you go to Azkaban and if you succeed but get caught, the object gets confiscated because "too dangerous" and you go to Azkaban. So I think the main problem is limiting bureaucracy combined with larger population both in wizards and muggles and in the advancement of muggles (as in they pose a threat now and need to be hidden from). To the question of diluting magical abilities: We'd need to know where magic comes from. If all wizards have a universal common ancestor that had a gene that made him able to use magic then it is possible that "dilution" occurs (if the magic gene is non-dominant) but in the sense that fewer people are wizards and not that wizards are weaker. If some god once gave the power of magic to some guy and made some arbitrary rules for how it is given to his offspring then anything possible. If magic is some power that exists everywhere but is finite it would also be possible that as there are more wizards there is less magic for everyone or if magic is a non-renewable resource maybe it's simply being used up. It would definitely be interesting to see what these guys can come up with as I am a filthy casual on the topic.

I think the problem lies in the fact that you're comparing one, or two generations of modern wizards to hundreds to thousands of years worth of ancient wizards. I don't think ancient wizards were all that more powerful, it's just that in the span of multiple millennia there ought to be a handful of extremely powerful wizards. I think the average Joe weren't really more capable than their modern counterparts.

Thought I'd add one more piece of evidence tying Harry Potter to Greek mythology. Professor Trelawny is a known descendant of Cassandra, the princess of the city Troy from Greek history. She was cursed with mumbling prophecies that no one ever believed. This is the same curse that is on Sybill. Greek gods exist in the same universe as Harry Potter, and by extension, Fantastic Beasts.

I don't think JK makes her character's literally descended from Greek gods, she just took a bunch of inspiration from Ancient magic (they had a full museum exhibit of everything she took inspiration from). It's more likely that Sybill's great-great-Grandmother was simply named after the Greek princess than her actually being an ancient Greek princess. The same way that Sybill's name comes from 'The Sibyls' who are Seers and clairvoyants from ancient history, and also the reason that the hallows are not the actual ancient Greek artefacts, just follow a similar storyline. But it is an interesting theory!

If Dumbledore was in possession of the eye before it was given to Moody, he would have most certainly attempted to dissect the magic that made it so powerful. With that in mind, he seems to have succeeded. I say he succeeded because he seems to have managed to bewitch his halfmoon spectacles in the same manor. It wouldnt be the first time a pair of glasses were bewitched. And now that I think about it... I have a theory that piggybacks off this theory: Greek mythology was based on mortals/muggles seeing the Wizarding World. You know how stories of dragons and witches are from seeing actual dragons and witches? How stories of sphinxes and griffins made their way into muggles minds? Wait a second... sphinxes and griffins are from GREEK/ROMAN mythology (romans reskinned greek mythology). Now, we know the the Deathly Hallows are like the three magical objects from Perseus’s stories. Maybe the Greek gods were just really powerful wizards? Maybe even the FIRST wizards? It seems fitting that muggles would worship the Olympian Council, the council of the first, ancient wizards. The first wizards had children, and these are the minor gods (purebloods) and demigods (also known as... guess what... HALF-BLOODS). This would explain how muggles know of the Deathly Hallows: they saw the Deathly Hallows but couldn’t understand what they were (remember how muggles thought sirius’s wand was a gun?) so they thought the Elder Wand was a sword, the Invisibility Cloak was a Helm of Darkness, and the stone was a bad. Ok, the last one doesn’t really fit, but maybe over the years of passing down the story it got twisted. Maybe the three brothers the made the Deathly Hallows were in fact the Big Three, the three most powerful gods who were also brothers, sons of the Titan’s kind Kronos. The muggles named these three brothers Zeus, Poseidon, and Hades. Zeus made the Elder Wand/sword, Hades made the Invisibility Cloak/Helm of Darkness, and Poseidon made the stone/bag. The stone/bag might have been hidden from mortals so they wouldn’t try raising the dead. Anyone here read Percy Jackson? You know how Nico (demigod son of Hades) raised the dead? The way thats works sounds an awful lot like the stone... PERCY JACKSON/HARRY POTTER CROSSOVER SERIES CONFIRMED!,!!,!,,!,QQ!1!!1? Tl;dr: greek mythology was muggles seeing wizards and making stories and worshipping the wizards. Hey i just thought about something: the Greeks should be really effing mad about people HUNTING THEIR GODS.

I have a theory. Dumbledore once said, the Peverel brothers were extremely gifted wizards and had made the hallows themselves. If we take it to be true, then I am not sure that they were able to create the stone at the very first try. So, what if the eye is actually one of the failed attempts at making the stone? The stone is supposed to let you see the people lurking in the far shore(land of the dead), right? So what if, in one of the attempts, they were able to create a stone that did allow them to see things which were not visible to the human eye? Just imagine that you are one of the Peverel brothers, and the desparately want to make something which will enable you to see those who had died. First you would want to see if there is anything which is not visible to the human eye, right? So what if it is this eye?

So awesome! Couple notes: 1) When Moody says he's just doing a favor for Dumbledore, isn't that really Crouch Jr. talking? and 2) Doesn't Moody have the Marauders' Map? That could have helped him guess that Harry was stuck in the step, because his magic eye would have seen that the step was compressed, even if it couldn't see Harry.
@ZenaraX6 жыл бұрын
He didn't have the map yet, he actually found out about the map that night. Harry was hidden under the cloak, waving to get Moody's attention as he was about to give the map to Snape. I was confused by the favour part too! I'm pretty sure it was Crouch Jr. at that point.

You know, Grindelwald could just have Heterochromia.
I wrote this on my notes last night when I was have asleep. But reading it today did make me think. So in Harry Potter the moving stairs... well... move. And there have been many encounters with the moving stairs. People just hanging out on the stairs finding eggs and finding escaped fat lady’s. So why did they never move when all of this was going on. BUT. They moved in the first book to bring the golden trio to the ONE PLACE where they weren’t supposed to go. Did the stairs know that Harry, Hermione, and Ron were meant to find fluffy the three headed dog? Did the stairs know that they had to wait til they were all together to bring them to the third floor? Did the stairs know that they were the ones to find the philosophers stone and defeated Voldemort’s little face head thing on the back of quirrells head? Idk man kinda cool tho
@MissZeely6 жыл бұрын
Bria Skye in the book the stairs aren't the reason they find fluffy, the stairs aren't a major plot point in any of the books, in the books the trio (and Neville) get locked out of Gryffindor Tower at night and they hide in the third floor corridor to avoid being caught by filch and that's how they get caught - however when I first read your comment I got intrigued too before I remembered that was a movie change, would have been cool though 👍🏼😊

Ok around 7:30 ish he says that one of the most famous eyes and probably the same eye that moody had is the eye of the Graea sisters, but there's another eyefrom mythology that would probably also fit the bill. The eye of Horus, from Egyptian mythology. Basically explorers in ancient Egypt who explored by sea would paint an eye (technically its gold not blue but whatever) on the hull of their boat and bless the painting? I guess? Idk but that eye represented the eye of the Egyptian god Horus, the god of like war and chivalry and fighting and stuff and also the king of the gods im pretty sure. Essentially the purpose of the eye was either to watch out for and warn the boats passenger of demons and monster under the water or to scare away said demons and monsters i forget. But this was also a real physical eye (at least real in myth but so is the eye in the video) in horus' face with all the properties of moody's eye. It could see the mystical and was considered 'all-seeing'. Another classic eye from mythology was the eye(s) of Heimdall. Marvel fans probably dont need me to explain this but for anyone else basically Heimdalls eye was the all-seeing eye to end all all-seeing eyes. It could see through anything, magical or not, and was capable of looking at the entire universe, across all the nine realms of norse myth. And yeah in marvel movies his eyes are orange, and I dont think he ever loses one, but ben also did a theory where thors new eye was one of heimdalls so im allowing some cut corners. Anyway, Heimdalls and Horus' eyes, two of the other famous eyes that i really think would work for this. If I got any of the facts wrong Im sorry I didn't research this just did it from memory so its probably a bit off thank you for coming to my ted talk

I’ve thought about how this eye was so special, because I find this really interessant. I’ve re-watched some of your videos. One of them (the one about the truth behind the veil in the ministry of magic) spoke about the relation between the Thestrals and the Pevrell brothers. The parallel was just what I needed to understand the connection between this eye and the deathly hallows. I think both Mad-eye Moody and Grindelwald do have a Thestral eye. That would explain why mad eye could see through the invisibility cloak : because they have the same origins. And we can see in the trailer from Fantastic beasts 2 that Grindelwald does have something with Thestrals. Like he just drive them ! (I know that Harry and his friends did the same, but there it’s an entire crew !) I must say that I haven’t watched the movies for a long time and I don’t remember if the Thestrals have eyes ^^that would be bothering... Hope you understand my idea ! When you have something to add (or even when you don’t agree ^^) don’t hesitate to share your opinion ! I’m excited to see what other people think about my theory. So, if the story of the three brothers is correct, then these items were made by a single entity (entitled Death in the story). It would make sense that "Death," after being evaded by the youngest brother, would create an item with the ability to see through the cloak. It would also make sense that only a wizard who created an item would be able to find a way to counteract said items. Therefore, the eye must have been created by whomever Death is. Perhaps someone that the Peverell brothers all had a quarrel with.

@Haia Mohamed Asem Elshaer You have to remember it was cast by the Elder Wand, another Deathly Hallow. Maybe that's why the spell worked.
@vyrtilanyrwen30714 жыл бұрын
Rodrigo Romano, right, but I don’t think that Dumbledore owned the Elder Wand. You should check out the video that SCB made, but the gist of it is that Dumbledore beat Grindelwald in a duel to win this wand, but the Elder Wand can never actually lose in a duel, so Grindelwald never had it. It still belonged to the wand maker Gregorovitch. Since Voldemort killed him in the seventh book, he obtained the wand. Then Harry killed Voldemort, which was possible because it was not a formal duel, thereby acquiring the Elder Wand. The point is that I don’t think the Elder Wand had anything to do with Dumbledore seeing Harry, Ron and Hermione, because Dumbledore never truly controlled it. However, there is another theory that I am not opposed to. I don’t know how Rowling responded to it, but quite frankly, I don’t care what she responded with, because she probably just listens to the theories and decides which ones she likes and declares them true. The theory is that Dumbledore is Death. The same person who gave the three brothers the Deathly Hallows. That may explain why he could control the Elder Wand enough to use it to see through the invisibility cloak. However, if Dumbledore is not death, then the theory of the Elder Wand allowing him to see through the cloak just falls apart.

Yeo Ana I don’t think the boggart was able to see Moody, so he might have actually seen the real form..... But then again, how does he know how a boggart looks like? He couldn’t have studied how they look them because no-one else has an eye that can see through stuff like that. He might have known through experience, (seen an odd creature through a closet and then opened it and saw his worst fear, so he knew it’s a boggart the next time he saw it through something.). That’s just what I think 🤔. No idea 💡 if that’s true or not.

Voldemort must have been seriously awesome at magic if he was able to create a diary that was enchanted to have the identical effects of the pensive, which we've established was made either by the peverells or wizards of equal talent... Then I thought is the diary enchanted or is it just the effect that the horcrux has on the diary... then I thought well if the latter is true then... is the pensive a peverell horcrux!!! then I thought... whoa are the Hallows all peverell horcruxes!?! is that the magic used by the brothers to make such extremely powerful items and actually fulfill the story of the three brothers by making them immortal and therefore first, "masters of death" in their eyes... try and connect those dots my friends!

I just reread the part of The Deathly Hallows when “Mad-Eye” just died.😢😢😢

If only I didn’t know that Moody’s eye is blue I would have said that it’s a Thestral’s eye considering that the Hallows are all made from some part of a Thestral. But hey, maybe Thestral’s eye turn blue when separated from the body. Who knows?
@JarlGrimmToys6 жыл бұрын
msk where did you get that from? I know the elder wands core was thestral tail hair. But the clock and stone?
@MegaKhelditia6 жыл бұрын
The cloak was a slice of Death's robes, not a piece of thestral, tho they are the creatures most associated with Death. I don't know if Death would have used his own hair for a wand core.

Mad-Eye isn't the only one who can see Harry under the cloak: Dumbledore sees him too on at least two different occasions. So maybe the cloak just isn't as good as advertised.
@GMLiska6 жыл бұрын
I was just checking to see if anyone had mentioned this yet-Dumbledore totally saw him under the cloak!! I can't remember if it was from canon or fanfic, but somewhere I read it had to do with Dumbledore's glasses...
@MegaKhelditia6 жыл бұрын
Dumbledore DID hold onto the cloak for 10 years, enough time to study it and figure out any way to tune into a frequency Death just... doesn't have? Maybe his glasses are enchanted to be able to see negative space, idk.

i used to think the way dumbledore scans people like xray..was that he uses legilimency to find out the truth..thats why he trusts people so much.
@kloeft6 жыл бұрын
@@ankitdas6620 Or maybe he can just kinda "sense" magic, so while he might not know that Harry is there he knows something is there and given that very few wizards are powerful enough to cast perfect invisibility, and even fewer have a reason to be at Hogwarts, it might not be too hard to figure out. Harry in general isn't the hardest person in the world to figure out, and Dumbledore knows him better than Harry at times knows himself.
@Doctor_Odin6 жыл бұрын
His spectacles probably Grant him the ability to see beyond the normal viewing Spectrum like possibly being able to see energy spectrum and can recognize the energy that is emitted by the invisibility cloak or it could be that the Elder Wand was used to make the eye and the spectacles to absolute vision.

This theory of Moody's eye being Grindelwald's is so brilliant that I'm even more angry about the recast and that Mads Mikkelsen didn't wear the blue eye.

Kutekwaii Aj now that i think about it, we don't know when he lost his eye (only that a DE cut off his nose before Crouch Jr was arrested), so it's actually possible.

Lol I've thought about that too. Like can he see people naked or does he somehow know how to not do that

Emily Burt if he can see through the Cloak, i don't see (pun intended) how a simple bra could stop it.
