I had a similar initial response, feeling that many of the lyrics could be read through the lens of a parent leaving during childhood. The imagery of holding out a hand could be seen as wanting an invitation to go along with the person who "cannot be replaced" as they leave, but it isn't offered so he's the "one who will stay". In that light, my first take on the chorus was that he's talking to his sister, since our siblings are the only ones who inhabit the same world as us and can truly understand a change of that nature. (In this world, it's just us / you know it's not the same as it was.) Some of the visuals also align really well with the way in which siblings' world's eventually are no longer fully aligned as you get older, even if they're ones that still truly get where you come from/the forces that shape you. Second verse possibly recounting a moment later in life that resonates strongly with the experience referenced in the first verse. Many people seem to be leaning toward a romantic reading. And if there's any truth in my initial interpretation, it would make sense if certain lyrics reference ways in which early experiences influence relationships as an adult. However, my own reality means that I'm rarely inclined to immediately interpret things through a heteronormative lens.

It also made me think more about the album title, particularly the juxtaposition between the interpretation of one's house as a classic marker of adulthood (even if it's one that's increasingly out of reach for many people), and strong childhood associations of the phrasing, thinking back to the days when everything was defined on those terms ("we're going over to Harry's house after school").. Anyway, I haven't commented before tonight, but I've been appreciating your videos for a while now. Thank you for the depth and the joy that you bring to your reactions!

I think this is personal about close relationships. Especially Olivia and his biological family. He always said he doesn’t know what to do with himself when he is home. Harry is speaking about himself but he is also referring to stuff we can relate to as well: Lockdown, relationships coming and going, things going stale, family dying, coping in unhealthy ways, the feeling of instability, running in a habit rail, wanting our old lives back, freedom from things which bind us. Knowing who is in your life for good and how startling it is to have that realization. And to realize that through all of this hype, there is a lot of complacency and mundane and pain because of that reality. No one saves anyone. We truly are alone in this world. There’s freedom in that.

He’s got a great relationship with his Dad so I don’t feel it’s about that. He said on heart radio it’s about losing one’s self then finding one’s self and being happy with where he is with his own mind. This is my favourite to date. She, SOTT and falling are up there too but this is yet another incredible song from him. He just keeps getting better.
