What If Harry Was in Slytherin - Harry Potter Theory

Hey everyone,
Welcome to another installment of Harry Potter Theory. In today’s video, we’re going to be discussing Harry Potter, the house system, and a popular “what if” scenario that has been leaving fans curious for years- WHAT IF Harry Potter, the boy who lived, was sorted in to SLYTHERIN. What makes this question so compelling is that Harry is such a quintessential Gryffindor- showing his immense bravery on numerous occasions throughout the series. Furthermore, Harry being in Slytherin would PRESUMABLY alter the course of the entire series.
Let’s dive right in to it.
Now, when the books first start out Harry is just an innocent, downtrodden young man. He’s trapped in the boring muggle world with no real concept of the wizarding world, and he has some of the worst adoptive parents that you could ask for. Right from the very beginning, you feel for Harry, and you can’t help but think of all the hardship that he has to endure up to that point.
When Harry starts nearing the appropriate age to start attending Hogwarts, one of the most famous magical schools in the wizarding world, he starts getting Hogwarts letters in the mail. This happens because of the book of admittance and quill of acceptance.
Little did he know that when his name was first inscribed on the book of admittance it would change his life forever. When the Hogwarts letters started piling in, Harry’s uncle Vernon knew exactly what was up- and vehemently disallowed Harry from opening any of the letters sent, despite them being addressed to him.
Fortunately, however, Dumbledore and Hagrid are more than privy to Harry’s ‘unique’ circumstances, and Hagrid ends up hand-delivering the acceptance letter to Harry, ensuring that he is aware of the upcoming school year. After a brief explanation from Hagrid introing the wizarding world, Harry travels to diagon alley where he picks up all of his school supplies. At first it’s overwhelming- but at the same time it’s exciting, as it indicates a new chapter in Harry’s life- a chapter full of excitement and magic. What we need to remember though, is that Harry, despite his reputation, wasn’t yet a strong person. He had a rough start to his life, the only influences he had were his adoptive family, who were awful, and he must have been HIGHLY impressionable. Not before long, Harry finds himself on the Hogwarts Express, sharing a compartment with a somewhat shy, yet friendly Ron Weasley. Together, the pair make the journey from Platform Nine and Three-Quarters at King’s Cross Station in London to Hogwarts for the very first time. However, Harry’s previously tranquil and confusing first journey to Hogwarts is not without altercation. Shortly after Harry and Ron have introduced themselves, Draco, Crabbe and Goyle all burst in to their compartment- curious to see if it’s true that THE Harry Potter is coming to Hogwarts.
After insulting Ron due to his appearance - red hair, freckles, shabby looking…must be a Weasley - Draco offers what I believe is meant to be his best piece of advice, along with his outstretched hand:
“‘You’ll soon find out some wizarding families are much better than others, Potter. You don’t want to go making friends with the wrong sort. I can help you there.’
He held out his hand to shake Harry’s…”
Of course, in the book, Harry quickly rejects this offering, with the sentence ending with “…but Harry didn’t take it.”
But…WHAT IF he had? What if, in that moment, he had hesitated, ever so slightly. Paused just long enough to think, “Well, what’s the harm in keeping my options open? Who really knows who these two boys are? Who’s to say that Ron Weasley would make a better ally than Draco Malfoy in this new and intimidating world I’ve found myself thrown into?”
Like I stated earlier, Harry is young and massively impressionable. He was THRUST in to a magical world with no prior knowledge of it, and now he’s being put in pressure situations where he’s having to assess, on the spot, which company is right for him. But I’ll also say this- Harry’s willingness to accept or deny Draco’s handshake does not necessarily have any bearing on what house he would end up in, it just means that things might be a bit more awkward for him once he’s sorted in to Slytherin, having instead chosen the friendship of someone in a rival house. HOWEVER, for the sake of the video I’m going to proceed on the basis that Harry did accept Draco’s handshake- a decision that would already send him in a very different direction than the Harry we’re used to.

You're forgetting the prophecy here. I agree that Harry's friendships and love interests would have been different, but Voldemort wouldn't stop trying to kill the boy who the prophesy stated would be his demise, so Harry would have to fight against Voldemort if he wanted to survive, and Harry's hatered towards the man who murdered his parents wouldn't have vanished just because he changed house. Also, I highly doubt that Dumbledore would have thought "oh, Harry became a Slytherin instead of a Gryffindor, let's just skip it all then". No, I'm sure he would have made sure Harry stayed on his path even as a Slytherin, probably with help of Snape.

I'm surprised this comment hasn't received more recognition. If Voldemort took the prophecy seriously enough to seek out to kill Harry as a baby then there's less chance he would take the chance of a rival dark lord rising up. The ambitious and ruthless nature of a Slytherin would likely persuade Voldemort even further that Harry was going to be a direct threat, particularly with the 'power the dark lord knows not' line of the prophecy probably pushing Voldemort in the direction that Harry was born with incredible innate magical ability. I suppose the most interesting question would be, if Harry were to seek to kill the one who killed his parents but following the mentality more prominent amongst Slytherin students would he build his own following and immerse himself in the dark arts in an attempt to one day fight and kill Voldemort, and would dumbledore allow him to go down this path and still protect him. Also for me too much emphasis is put on Harry being the only one able to kill Voldemort and the 'inevitable return' or Voldemort if his horcruxes were not destroyed. If Harry were able to rival him in magical ability while having his own army surely if Harry won a duel with Voldemort and destroyed his body as happened before then the only way Voldemort could come back would be if he had a willing servant return to him again, and with this in mind surely those with the same views as Voldemort would be happier to follow the new dark lord (Harry) who if he had embraced Slytherin fully would no doubt be a pre blood fanatic and appeal to voldemorts supporters anyway. Yes Voldemort may never die but he may also never have the opportunity to restore his body for a second time or rise again to power.

Given Voldemort's psychotic nature, I doubt he would. He could ponder it, but I'm sure even he knows that he isn't fatherly material. And it would have to be one of his Death Eaters or supporters that would've taken up this role. But there's a few issues: That protection that was laid on Harry, keeping Voldemort from touching him, and if he did try to touch him, the bad that would happen would just confirm to Voldemort that Harry is a threat. Plus, even if he managed to take him, Snape would be around to tell Dumbledore about Harry's location, which would foil the whole "raised by voldemort" possibility.

I personally dont believe that Harry would have turned into a villain like Draco without heavy influence. I think because of how he was treated by his relatives growing up, he would still have a strong desire to be everything that they weren't. This would prevent those like Draco and other members of Slytherin house from making him more malicious in nature. I believe Harry would constantly try to influence those around him, much like Voldemort did with his followers, except in the exact opposite way. Making a positive name for Slytherin and changing and removing stereotypes about those who are sorted into it. Proving that you can be in Slytherin and be a good hearted and talented wizard. Creating a tense divide between Pure blood parents and their children. I also believe Harry's influence on Draco would create an interesting struggle between him and his father. Harry having taught him on how to be a better person, and how that conflicts with Lucius' pure blood and overall beliefs. There's a bunch more that could go into it, but thats what I would think would happen.

you make an excellent point and I can completely see that being the case up until the point when Harry truly begins to see the likenesses between him and Voldemort. Rather than trying to distance himself from Voldemort it is a possibility that Harry would embrace it and willingly accept the name of heir of Slytherin in Chamber of Secrets. Though possibly Snape would interestingly be the road block for this, possibly trying to subtly steer Harry away that killed Lily

Yeah I can see Slytherin Harry as future M o M. I mean he is famous and he have best friend from RICH family who can give him a lot of money so Harry would do something for him as M o M. @@JustSomeSlavicBoy But deep down Malfoy was already not all bad. Refer book 6 and 7 where he could have done some real evil stuff, but chose not to. Personally I do think Harry would have helped Malfoy to reach this earlier while at the same time I also believe Harry himself would have been swayed to be less good, after all he never was someone for following rules. Also convincing Harry that muggles are bad would have been easier given his exposure to them up to that point. Ultimately I believe they would have sort of met half way, both becoming more morally Grey.

Potters connection to Voldemort would have been more ever-present and I believe Snape would have picked up on it. Telling Voldemort and them discovering that Potter was indeed a horcrux. At the end it says “The one with the power to vanquish the Dark Lord will be born as the seventh month dies...” what is the seventh month? July. Which two people were born as the seventh month dies? Harry (July 31st) and Neville (July 30th). Keep in mind that prophecy did not specify what day it is, it just said that at the end of July. The original comment above said “If Harry was sorted into Slytherin and *became the antagonist,* then Neville would have been the protagonist.” they’re saying that if Harry was the antagonist, then it’s most likely that Voldemort wouldn’t have marked him as his equal and instead picked Neville.

It is always an interesting “what if” but I think the biggest things that would need to change would be Harry’s whole trip to Diagon Ally and who Harry sat with on the train. In Diagon Ally, Hagrid would have needed to less opinionated about the Houses, taken a more neutral stance on each when explaining them. Then Harry and Draco’s first meeting would have needed to go better, maybe Narcissa is there and that tempers Draco’s attitude. He reminded Harry too much of Dudley for Harry to want to, later on take his hand. Then on the train, I think Harry would have need to be by himself. The Twins still help with his trunk, but Ron never ends up sitting down with Harry. So Draco happens to see Harry by himself, maybe even from an angle that he sees Harry’s scar, and initiates a second, more polite meeting. Where Draco is befriending a friendless Harry, not belittling Harry’s only friend while trying to “steal him” from Ron. It might need to even go so far as to have Harry see the Malfoy’s first, and not meet the Weasley’s. But I think after the sorting, Harry’s personality would have a great impact on Slytherin. I doubt we would see Harry go down the cruel path, not after how he was treated by the Dursley’s. The most interesting part about all this is how Harry’s relationship would be with Snape. It is hard to image Snape every being nice to Harry or being his mentor, even if it was on Dumbledore’s orders.

I still think it would have been the same, because as JK Rolling had said. It's our values that shape us. You can be a kind Slytherin like Horace Slughorn (He just had ambition). Harry could very much be the same, Harry could also mend friendships with Ron and Hermione it wouldn't necessarily set in stone.

I think based on his character we see in the books. I think he'd still have his friends. I think he doesn't have to take Dracos hand in order to be in Slytherin and vice-versa. The biggest change would be showing his friends and other Gryffindors how wrong they are about Slytherin. He looks like his dad and acts like his mom according to the books but is in Slytherin. So I think he'd keep his friends, not shake Dracos hand, still go up against Draco and land a place as Seeker. I think much would play out the same way, just with him in Slytherin. Everything that happens in the Gryffindor dorm would still happen there. He'd still marry Ginny, and defeat Voldy. In the second year, he would be picked on even more because of him talking to snakes, I even think it would be physical, where Ron and Hermione would stop the fights. Peeves would be exceptionally at an all time annoyance. Not all would be the same, like in the third year and some of the things that went on while he was in Gryffindor dorm. Dumbledore would still be there for him as much as he was in the original story, because of his character. This isn't wishful thinking, based on what we see from Harry in the books, he would be the same person here, but more open minded.

Being sorted in Slytherin doesn't mean that you would become a villain. Harry would never become someone like Malfoy because he wasn't a pampered little brat but an abused orphan. And there was no reason for Albus Dumbledore to not have the same relationship with Slytherin Harry

I personally think a lonely, abusive childhood like Harry's would be far more likely to result in a cunning, guarded, Slytherin type than the brave, open, seemingly carefree Gryffindor we got. The main reason he chose Gryffindor was Draco, who behaved like a bully. If he never met either him or Ron before the sorting, he would probably have been in Slytherin

I don't agree at all with the statement that Harry was very impressionable. That kid already knows deep concepts other boys and girls his age barely has an understanding of, due to his terrible upbringing. He already has a strong personality based in his morals and ethics. For him to end up in Slytherin and taking the handshake of Draco we have to forfeit Harrys already established personality.

Harry would have never become Draco's friend, the prophecy still exists in this timeline and Draco's father is a Death Eater, so sorting in the Slytherin does not mean Voldemort would have embraced Harry and stop trying to kill him.

Harry being a Slytherin wouldn't change any of his positive personalities, he would have more similar abilities Merlin mastered. But by being sorted into Gryffindor, he had a better lifetime with Ron and Hermonie and got several relationships with other wizards/witches such as Cedric or Cho.

I'm at the beginning of the Order of the Phoenix but I have a question: Would Voldemort have still wanted to kill Harry? Honestly, Harry could be a great ally to Voldemort considering he has some of his powers - powers that would make him stand out from the rest of Voldemort's followers. They could take on the world together if it came down to it.

I respectfully disagree with much of this video. It seems to me you changed too much. I think the simplest solution to how he got into Slytherin would be if Hagrid just didn't mention their tendency to produce dark wizards. In that case, Harry would not have been so anti-Slytherin when being sorted. But I still think Harry would have snubbed Draco; he reminded him too much of Dudley. It just would have been awkward between Harry and Draco later when they were in the same house. I also don't think Snape would treat Harry any better. If anything, he would abuse his role as Head of Slytherin to torment Harry. I also don't think Dumbledore would have bailed on the whole Chosen One prophecy just because Harry wasn't in his favorite house; he still would have been preparing Harry to confront Voldemort. And speaking of Voldemort, just because Harry was a Slytherin doesn't mean Voldemort wouldn't want to return and/or take revenge. He still would have been after the stone, and without Hermione and Ron, Harry would not have stopped him. Heck, Harry probably wouldn't even have known about it. So Voldemort would have returned after Harry's first year.

kinda interesting. if he went down a bad road, it reminds me of anakin in star wars. their roles whould be very similar. a what if anakin in star wars didnt embrace the darker side we might have seen a similar story for him as we did for harry.

I don't think it would make sense for Vodlemort to recruit harry seeing as Harry was his downfall. I also don't see it plausible for Dumbledore to recruit Ron and Hermione as Dumbledore knew Harry would be the only one selfless and brave enough to sacrifice their own life at the hands of Voldemort without knowing he was a horcrux, which is the only reason Harry is revived and kills Voldemort at the end. Nobody else would stand a chance at defeating Voldemort and Voldemort would've never gotten over his vendetta against Harry

Legit just think if Harry n draco were friends half the story lines would be gone. Book 1 .he plays exploding snap that night draco. Next day hears news about Stone n Tom couldn't get it with mirror. Book 2. Draco oh your talk to snakes too? Cool slytherine founder could talk to snakes too. They say he built a chamber in the school and put a basilisk there. Did you know baskilisks can paralyse or kill you with its eyes. It's probably what's attacking students. Maby you should tell it to stop (but get granger first eh?) Book 3 . Black broke into the castle and attacked a Weasley a few times but other wise an average year for Harry. Book 4 dude my dads bribed all the judges . The magic contract says you have to compete not finish the challenges. Just throw up red sparks when you start challenge. You will still get points for effort and win. Its all sorted mate no voldemort rising . Book 5 another perfectly average year. With a wonderful new teacher who gets sacked instantly because dracos father hears about he man handling dracos mate. Book 6 slug club yay! And exams bit of drarry Book 7 they decide to have a bit of a last hurrah last year hogworts n Harry happily walks into his dream job.

There would be no Gryffindor sword, no Ron and Hermione, Harry would have been on his own, he wouldn't be a Seeker, bullied worse by Snape, not knowing his Godfather, not Taking on the Troll. He wouldn't get far to get the Stone, no Ford Flying Angela, no Ginny. No Burrow. No protection since everyone hates Slytherin. Hogwarts would have been closed by the middle of the second book due to the snake. Yeah, there would be no events from book three onwards. The timeline would change, meaning Peter would stay hidden, not being able to repel dementors. That meant that Voldemort came back quicker and stronger in a different way. Ginny would have died, and have to deal with Voldemort much ealier own. Not sure how much would change, but it would be a new timeline entirely.

Draco will be his best friend instead of Ron.. twin prince of slytherin is born... they will win all quidditch, easily Harry will spend holiday in malfoy house. Malfoy will more kinder, and will sacrifice him self for harry sake event fight his dad for harry. Harry will become more assertive to his goals. 2 will become brother, and snape will become like father to harry.

Hmm I watched this after watching supercarlinbrothers dive in depth into the same subject and I appreciate this is your individual take on what would happen. However I think at his core Harry is a good person and being put into Slytherin wouldn’t have changed that and I also don’t think that being put into Slytherin necessarily makes someone steer more towards being bad. As the characters are represented Slytherin house aren’t the best influence I grant you that but they aren’t all that way. It’s very interesting to see how different people interpret this possible story direction though. Honestly I’d love to see the series redone with Harry in Slytherin it would change so many character dynamics and I love Harry Potter it’s one of my favourite series of movies but it really would have made everything less clear cut and black and white I think. To have not everyone in Slytherin be so plainly unlikable and everyone in Gryffindor be so plainly good would have made the house interactions more interesting as well.

Your assumption that if in Slytherin Harry would turn evil or bad is biased since the assumption that all Slytherins are bad 😕, but you seem to forget that Voldemort killed his parents and tried to kill him. So we would most likely have a Slytherin hating on Voldemort and maybe convincing other Slytherins to do the same. I also think Dumbledore would still guide him as he did and Snape would also protect him since his motivations come from before the events in the book and don't change. ☺️

I think the title is wrong here. The start of the change of events is different. I think it should be, what if harry accepted draco's offer? He can still be sorted into Slytherin without shaking draco's hand. The title of this video should be different.....in my opinion.

I usually like your theories but this just doesn't seem right. We see harry being nice to hagrid, even though he is so hairy and large. We also know that he was mistreated by the dursleys, and voldemort had killed his parents. Why would he not accept hermione being a son of a muggle born witch. He would understand of course. Harry had been bullied by dudley and his gang so he surely wouldn't allow malfoy to insult ron whose family and he had been so nice to him and helped him. He knows how it feels as he too didn't had money in the muggle world. And he would hate voldemort for killing his parents as because of him he suffered from a horrid childhood without parents, friends aand being treated unfairly. Like if you think I'm right.

Mannn Draco would've become a rebel, just imagine hiw cool that would've been, also people says that Harry wouldn't have had brave friends to fight against Voldemort or find Horcruxes, but the truth is if Harry was in Slytherin we could've seen the real traits of Slytherin, because there are so many students like Leta Lestrange in Slytherin, rather than fake Slytherin like Crab n Goyle, We could see hiw actual Slytherin house is, the house that is known gor their extreme loyality, rebel minds and rule-breaking, so yeah Harry would've gotten a very loyal friendship, even if ge wasn't able to influence the Malfoy head members we could see him easily concerting Draco and his pals, more Slytherin's with potential would've been brought out, new characters would've been introduced rather than just making them look like villains for conceptual purpose, it would've changed the worlds view about Slytherin stereotypes, his potentials would've been flourished easily as we can see when Hogwarts knew about Harry being a parseltongue everybody was warry about him, everybody more ir less was scared and avoided him accept Slytherin cause we know being a parseltongue and occlumence is very common in Slytherin, his occulumency lesson wouldve been easier as he could learn from the best,his fellow Slytherins would've helped him learn both of them....

I think that the one thing you overlooked is that Draco came across the same as the Dursleys. The same attitude of being better than everyone else. I think that would have been an instant turnoff.

I highly, HIGHLY doubt Harry being placed in Slytherin would have any effect on him like this. The sorting hat already said he would've done well under the snake, and he possessed several of the same characteristics as Voldemort (even though that was due to him being a Horcrux). Harry would've been essentially the same, spending time with Ron and Hermione, especially after realizing how much of a snob Draco was. Correction; Harry would've immediately seen how similar Draco was to the Dursleys and did everything he could to distance himself from that, even if he was sorted into Slytherin.

keep in mind, each house is an echo chamber for its values. Most people adopt the values of their parents because that is what they grow up with. It would be the same case. Also, in this "what-if" it is stated that he did take Draco's hand which could be construed as that being the first step on the road to friendship between the two. Then Harry, not really knowing anything about the wizarding world, might have just drunk in all of Draco's values like the sponge 11 year olds are. Even if I'm entirely wrong, I doubt he would have still ended up hanging out with Ron and Hermione when they are members of a rival house (and, like stated in the video, Harry slighted Ron pretty badly). Might have ended up hanging out with a different group of Slytherins, since he had already started feeling like Draco was too similar to the Dursleys back in Madame Malkin's

This video seems really shortsighted… “If Harry was in Slytherin he’d have been an antagonist” I don’t think ‘antagonist’ is the trait Salazar Slytherin requested for his house. Nor do I think someone has to be malicious or evil to be sorted in it. I think the reason that the sorting hat said her could be great is because Harry gets off by being seen: he’s happy to be known as the boy who lived, the first first year Seeker, one of four people who singlehandedly won the house cup in 1991, and of course, enjoys some _wide_ privileges since he wasn’t expelled in ‘92 or ‘93. Maybe being in Slytherin might’ve given him a reality check about everything great he does, since people would say “Oh that Slytherin boy trying to make a name for himself,” instead of “Golly that Gryffindor Boy is so brave!” I am genuinely curious if Harry would’ve been as open to Muggle-Borns in the Wizarding world if he’d been in Slytherin House, and interested to see if he mightve fought with Draco saying he hopes Hermonie dies in Chamber of Secrets, but this video doesn’t really provide any of that. It just says Harry would’ve had malice and preferred mean girls.

There's no chance that Voldemort would have tried to recruit Harry. The whole reason he tried to kill him in the first place was because he believed Harry would grow up to be a threat to him, with Dumbledore even theorizing that Voldemort chose to target Harry over Neville because he saw similarities between Harry and himself. Harry being sorted into Slytherin and displaying more selfish, power-hungry traits would just make Voldemort even more determined to kill him, because Voldemort thinks those traits are the best way to go, and would see them as confirmation that Harry has the potential to one day overthrow him.

You don't want to go making friends with the wrong sort (like the malfoys , though draco did quite redeem himself in the end). I feel like Harry would've still participated in the Triwizard tournament etc. even if he was in slytherin. I don't think his house changes the fact that Voldemort tried to get him killed throughout whole series, thus he would feel even more threatened by Harry overtaking him if he was in slytherin and keeps trying to kill him.

Well... You have to mention that Harry met Draco before the journey to Hogwarts and had a very bad first impression of him to the point of comparing him to Dudley who bullied Harry all his conscious life. So I think there was no way Harry would accept Draco's help or advice. If it were someone else... well maybe... but Draco was in for the antagonist role from the very start.
