I worked for Renault UK and had 15+ Renaultsport models: 182, V6, 197, Megane GT175 (diesel and actually quite quick) + Megane 225. We had to specify the Cup suspension on all models, and the 182 was by far the most fun, so small, and light and lively. (the V6 wasn't any quicker anywhere below 100 MPH and demanded total focus at all times, it also attracted every boy-racer for miles for a drag race!) The 197 was certainly more grown up and a better car in many respects, but carried too much weight and you needed to be right in the power band to overtake or make real progress, the 182 just seemed to go whatever gear you were in. You could be quite silly and the car would just let you get away with it, as close to a (torquey) go-kart as you can get on the road.

Just sold mine after 6 months. Would have loved to have held onto it but need to invest in the house. Had a 182 Cup for 7 years. Trophy was always an itch that needed scratched. 127k miles and it was faultless in the time I had it. One track day, two hillclimbs and a good few b-road blasts. Cost me -£500 as I managed to make a little on it despite investing in a wheel refurb and service. Can't complain at that!

Harry's back catalogue of video is a treasure trove. No Clios or Megans in the US but some old Civic Si's knocking around Craigslist. Had a Pug 306 XSi in the 90's, was great fun. My GTI MkVII is great, but not very visceral.

I don' have a 'well stocked' garage like Harry, but I do have a 2006 Mini Cooper S. Mine has been modded to 225 BHP, and I had to smile when he was talking about small, light, fast cars. It's not the fastest car on the road, but it's so much fun, and so rewarding for a weekend blast. I'm onboard when he talks about the BHP / fun ratio of hot hatches.

I so agree with this video. I drove one for a couple of months as my work car (worked at a Nissan/Renault dealer), and to be honest, never had or have had so much fun in a car.
@1SaG8 жыл бұрын
Among the ones I've driven, both the 182 and 197 (Cup Edition) are certainly up there. But to me, the older hot hatches are still worth a mention. I absolutely loved both the Mk I Golf GTI (1600 and 1800 versions) and the Mk II 16V. And the one car that really surprised me back in the day was the "E"-model Opel Kadett GSI 16V. Not a very good or desirable car compared to its main rival (Golf Mk II), but that engine was phenomenal. What I miss in all modern hatches is the feeling of being involved in the driving, the feeling of "directness" and responsiveness that you got in older cars. IMO, the switch to turbo-charged engines and electric power steering plus the massive increase in weight has killed a lot of what made old-school hot hatches so special and desirable.
@harrysgarage8 жыл бұрын
I agree. Something like the today's Focus RS is not a true hot-hatch to me. Way too big and complicated. In my book, the smaller the donor car, the better the hot-hatch it'll be..

The external resivouer on the Sachs shox isn't just there because the damper is thicker and needs extra fluid room! It's for damping adjustability, most have around 8 different settings to either stiffen the damper or soften it, this one is for adjustable bump and rebound which would be faster or slower, it allows you the adjustability to fine tune the the cars front suspension to your own liking so it's not either too stiff! Or too soft! With this shock you can always find a setting that's perfect for you!
@stevenjackson82266 жыл бұрын
Another good thorough walk around. Don't have to convince me of the greatness of great small performance cars. Love the adjustable, remote reservoir dampers. Dampers are critical suspension elements. What stood out to me was the GRP 308. I'd like to see a Harry tour of one of these rare 308s.

Fantastic little cars, I'm a younger driver and had one as my first "hot" hatch a year or so back, having now swapped it in for a Megane R26. Not the fastest thing in the world but a rev-hungry peach of an engine that just begged to have the piss kicked out of it and a chassis that never seemed to give up! Great starter hatchback that's almost impossible to not misbehave in. My old man used to complain about the ride whenever he was a passenger (as everyone else did!), but he'd never complain when he was behind the wheel.

I'd like to sell Jaguars.. so I cut my hair, bought a couple ties and went over to San Jose British Motors and got a job... they gave me a Midget to drive.. far out man ... big fun up in the mountains where I lived... but I blew up 3... and they gave me a Renault le Car... looked pretty goofy to me... but... it was better handling, better mileage, and.. the cops absolutely ignored me.. in the days of the 55mph speed limit here that was a big bonus for me... and I couldn't blow it up... awesome 😎.. sunroof... lots of room for two people.. a dog and luggage.. ya can't judge a book by looking at the cover... it was big fun to drive

Real world on real roads smiles per mile, a hot hatch is hard to beat! As a modern comparison, Mk8 Fiesta ST can just nick the Clio Trophy on performance figures and the extra weight extra weight probably makes it more planted whilst the turbo’s extra torque provides a great linear power band and makes the ST more driveable more of the time when you don’t always want to be ‘on it’. Not very hooligan but extra bonus; over 40 miles average MPG with the ST.

Hmm, even Harry forgets the 206 RC when he did his comparisons with other hot hatches. After all it has 177hp/1084kg, but I guess it wasn't as good in the damper department as this Clio.
@Exowar0110 жыл бұрын
The 206 RC actualy never was as good as the Clio, the clio had more performance and a better engine.
@mickwrinkles231810 жыл бұрын
Exowar01 Not really, it's the cheap transmission of the Peugeot that ruins the car, because it hasn't even got double or triple(Honda) synchros between gear 1 and 2, grinding if you shift very fast is unavoidable. Engine is indeed very similar to the Clio just look at the numbers, all are almost the same, RC even has more torque lower down than the Clio. Peak torque for the Clio is at 5250/Pug 4750 which gives the Pug a broader powerband. Performancewise, I've creamed several of my friends Clio's on the track and my RC is stock(except a straight-through exhaust) , so also seems more on par with the Clio 182 than anything else.

As for hot hatch history, if the Mini gets included, which I agree is entirely fair, then couldn't other cars be included? Isn't it more about taking a small, less assuming, inexpensive kind of car and turning it into a seriously formidable performance car. Quick, yes, but perhaps more about being a nimble driver's car than about brute force? A Lotus Cortina (which is earlier than them all), a Ford Escort RS and Cosworth? Others?
